Regional Children's Workshops

Coming up over the next two sets of school holidays are the HFNZ Regional Children's Workshops. These fun days are a great opportunity for kids aged 6 - 10 to get together with their peers, and learn some new stuff about living with a bleeding disorder.

These regional Children's Workshops are a little different to the national ones. Yes, we still have a heap of fun and learn lots. However, these workshops are open to a wider range of kids. Not only are we inviting children with bleeding disorders, we're also asking along kids whose parents or siblings have a bleeding disorder. We think that it's really important that our youngest members have a really good understanding of what it means to live with a bleeding disorder, and how it feels. It's also good for the children with a bleeding disorder to hear a bit about how it affects others.

Here's where your closest workshop will be, and when:

  • Central - April 17 @ The Johnsonville Community Centre, Wellington
  • Midland - April 24 @ The Discovery Christian Centre, Hamilton
  • Northern - July 9 @ The Athol Syms Hall, Epsom
  • Southern - July 17 @ The Bromley Community Centre, Christchurch

Invitations for the April Workshops have already gone out. If you haven't seen one, and know the perfect kids, just drop us a line at admin@haemophilia.org.nz to get them registered.

Central Quiz Night

On World Haemophilia Day, April 17, the Central team are running a dinner and quiz night.

From 6 - 9pm at the Khandallah Trading Company, Corner Agra Crescent and Ganges Road, Khandallah, Wellington, HFNZ members are cordially invited to enjoy some dinner, then join in the local quiz night. Food and non-alcoholic drinks are provided for financial members, children are welcome, and parking is available.

We already have a few takers, but the more the merrier. If you're keen, RSVP to Blair Wightman at 0273188846 or hfnzcentral@gmail.com.

It’s that time of year again when the HFNZ team look for feedback on how well the Foundation is performing for its members. This is a really important time because the information we collect now helps set the direction for the coming year. Over recent years we’ve used the results from our annual member survey to streamline Outreach services, so that our members can get the support that they’re looking for, and to improve the way we communicate with our members. The information we collect allows us to make good decisions about our priorities, so that we can give you the services that you want.

This year the HFNZ Members Survey is being administered predominantly online. That means that all members who have an email address registered with us will be sent a link, which takes them directly to the online survey. Those that don’t use email will be sent paper copies of the survey. When the paper copies are returned to us, we’ll manually insert the responses into the online survey, so that the results can all be collated together.

As you can imagine, manually entering the data from paper copies is very time consuming, filling in the survey online is our preferred option. If you don't want to wait for email, you can complete the survey here:

https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/2018HFNZMemberSurvey

The HFNZ Member Survey is open now, and runs until Sunday May 13.

Are you interested in attending Women's Weekend 2018?

Planning is now well underway for HFNZ Women's Weekend 2018. Exciting!

Arrangements have been made for this year's event to take place at the Copthorne Oriental Bay in Wellington on the weekend of September 14 - 16. Accommodation will be on a share-twin basis, and the weekend is open to all HFNZ women aged 18 and over, who have a diagnosed bleeding disorder, or carry the haemophilia gene.

As I said earlier, planning of speakers and activities is already underway, and, just quietly, it looks like a really fantastic weekend is in the offing!

Official invitations will go out mid-April, but what would make it a little easier is to get an early, non-binding, idea of how many women might be interested in attending.

If you think you might like to attend, please drop us a line at administrator@haemophilia.org.nz

Farewell to Ali

Well, it seems as though she's only just arrived, but Ali, our Southern Outreach Worker, is off to pastures new. We'll miss her lovely Scottish brogue, and her great attitude around the office. Ali was only here a short time, but she made good connections with a number of members, and was proactive in getting member lists and contacts into good order. The work she's done will certainly make life easier for whoever follows her.

On that note, the executive is considering the reappointment process, and we'll let you know when things are underway. We're really looking forward to getting someone new on board to look after the needs of the Southern members.

We'll let you know when there's more to share.

In the meantime, bon voyage to Ali, as she enjoys her African safari adventure, then moves on to her next role.

The Māori Electoral Option 2018

Here at HFNZ we want to make sure that all our members are represented at the highest levels in the way they want to be. Part of that is making sure that you're are aware of potential changes to the way you're represented.

Right now, if you’re Māori and 18 or over, it’s time to choose whether you want to be on the Māori Electoral Roll or the General Electoral Roll. This is the only opportunity to change the roll you're on for the next five years. This is really important because the number of people on the Māori roll determines the number of Māori electorates there are, and therefore how well represented you are in parliament.

The Māori Electoral Option runs from 3 April to 2 August 2018. To change the roll you're on, or to find out more about your options visit maorioption.org.nz

A Message from MSD

I wanted to remind you that some of our clients’ Accommodation Supplement and Accommodation Benefit rates will change on 1 April 2018. These changes are part of the Government’s ‘Families Package’ which aims to improve incomes for low and middle income families with children.

From 1 April, maximum payments will increase and some places will move into a different Accommodation Supplement Area. This is to reflect housing costs in some locations having increased more than others.

We’re writing in the next couple of days to clients getting an increase. Clients will see the full impact of the changes in their payments from 9 April. We’re encouraging our clients to use MyMSD to check their next payment. They’ll also be able to call Work and Income’s Service Express on 0800 33 30 30.Full details about changes to the Accommodation Supplement and rates are available on our website, www.workandincome.govt.nz - along with other details of the Families Package including Winter Energy Payment.

Regional Children's Workshops

As mentioned above, we're about to run a series of Regional Children's Workshops in each of our four regions. The programmes are close to being finalised, and they look AWESOME!

The dates and venues so far are:

Central - Johnsonville Community Centre, Wellington, April 17 (World haemophilia Day)
Midland - Discovery Christian Centre, Hamiliton, April 24
Northern - Athol Syms Hall, Epsom, Auckland, July 9
Southern - Bromley Community Centre, Chch, July 17

Alongside the Children's Workshops, we'll also be providing the opportunity for parents to touch base while the children are enjoying the workshop. The idea would be for parents to drop their kids off, then head off to meet up for an hour or so, before going about their day until the workshop is finished. You'll learn where the secret location is when you drop your kids off...

Contact the office: admin@haemophilia.org.nz or you Outreach Worker to find out more.

Invitation go out mid-April, but in the meantime please remember to contact head office to let us know if you think you'd like to attend: admin@haemophilia.org.nz
