Dear RGHS Parents and girls


Congratulations to all our girls on their achievements over this past term be they academic, sporting, music, art or in endeavours outside of school.  I trust that each girl and staff member will take time to rest over this break at the end of a very busy and long term.  Hopefully you have all managed to get connected to the new parent portal that will allow you access to reports and other useful information.

We are excited to be able to award the tender for our very own water plant this week, as we trust the fundraising target will be met.  Thank you very much to Mr Len Worthington-Smith for the extra hours and expertise he offered and thank you to Mr Myles Siebrits for the for driving this project.  Hopefully, by the end of next term we should be totally self-reliant as far as water supply is concerned.

The Grade 9 and 11 Camps have run smoothly and I am sure each of the girls that were on these enjoyed themselves and have extended their learning while making new friends. 

Those who attended the Music Picnic this weekend enjoyed a professional performance with excellent sound, catering and an entertaining host.

I wish our Jewish families happy Pesach and our Christian families a happy Easter.  May this be a meaningful celebration for each of you.

SGB Update


We would like to thank those parents who attended the SGB parent elections and to extend particular thanks to those who agreed to stand.

General Notices

  • FROM THE FINANCE OFFICE: Due to Easter weekend, debit orders of 1 April will process on 3 April.  Please maintain an availability of funds.
  • Term 2 starts on Tuesday 10 April 2018.  This is Week 1 (Day 1) on the timetable.
    Please note that there is much work to be covered before the mid-year examinations commence.  Learners need to be at school every day, for the full duration of the school day.
  • Bugs' Boutique will be open on the first Saturday of Term 2, 14 April from 9 -11 am.

Winter Uniform Changeover

From the start of next term girls may wear either complete winter OR complete summer uniform. No combinations of the two are allowed.
 
From Tuesday 2 May, however, the winter uniform will be compulsory for all learners. While level 6B water restrictions are in place, girls may continue to wear RGHS sports uniforms to school on the days they have PE and/or sport.
 
Parents are advised to check that their daughters’ uniforms still fit, jerseys are not frayed and worn, and to make new purchases in good time. Please bear in mind that stock or particular sizes may not be readily available closer to the changeover date.

News

Picnic Concert
On Saturday, 24 March the Music Department presented its Annual Summer Sunset Picnic Concert in the Main Quad at Rustenburg. It was well attended and thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. Several of the school's ensembles and music groups performed with the highlight being our Blu Jazz Rock Group getting the audience on their feet with the songs they performed at the V&A Waterfront Band Slam.

Grade 8 Natural Sciences Excursion
The Grade 8's embarked on their annual Natural Sciences excursion, this year visiting the Rondevlei Nature Reserve. The reserve is currently involved with the Gantouw project, bringing back the Eland to the Cape Flats. Herds of Eland roamed the Cape Flats around 200 years ago.

SECONDHAND CLOTHING SALE – Please clean out your closets during the holidays and donate your good, clean secondhand clothes/ shoes/ tog bags to the Sports department. We need your items delivered in black bags by Tuesday 10 April. Please label black bags clearly with whatever the contents are and deliver to the Sports Office on Tuesday (first day of term 2).

Sarah Dudley (second from left) and Zoe Nicol (right), both E's from 2017, were honoured in the recent Grade 9 Human Rights Day Assembly at school. They founded the Pride Campaign at Rustenburg three years ago and worked with dedication and commitment to raise awareness for the dignity and respect for the LGBTI+ community.

 At school:
  • 15 May Global University Expo, Thomson Hall period 8 for grade 11 and rest of school 3 - 3:30 pm. Participants include: New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts, Cologne Business School, KPU Vancouver Canada and more.
On Saturday, 24 March 2018 the following recorder students: Bianca Cilliers (Grade 12); Taylin Holland, Sara Wepener and Simone De Villiers (Grade 8) attended the Recorder Symposium at Rustenburg Girls’ Junior School. It was an enriching and informative experience for these students. A brief discussion about the most loved Vivaldi Concerti for Recorder was given by Joshua Frank. Afterwards, our students were privileged to receive master classes with various recorder specialists Dr Karin Maritz, Barbara Warner - Smith, Anne Meyer and Susan McAlpine.

International Piano Symposium


AMERYN PETERS and ANASTASIA KULLIKOLSKAJA attended the recent International Piano Symposium at the Music Department, Stellenbosch University from 14-18 March as participants among almost 50 pianists between the ages of 13 - 27.  Each played in three masterclasses with faculty members from universities throughout the country and were given the chance to perform in a lunch hour concert in the acoustically optimally resonant Endler Hall.  Here, Ameryn Peters is about to begin her masterclass with Associate Professor Catherine Foxcroft of the Department of Music and Musicology at Rhodes University, a former pupil of Rustenburg Girls' High School!
