One Nottingham Board Meeting: March 2018

Opportunity Nottingham and System Change – ON March Board.
The biggest area of conversation was considering the progress made by the Opportunity Nottingham Big Lottery’s Fulfilling Lives programme. Opportunity Nottingham is part of an 8 year programme in 12 locations across England all comprising local partnerships. It aims to improve the stability, confidence and capability of people with multiple needs, to direct them to lead better lives, so they spend less time in prison, reduce drug abuse, are in stable accommodation and have better mental health. It does this through, delivering services, evaluating social and economic impact and achieving system change
Opportunity Nottingham works with the most challenging and chaotic people in the city, 337 people so far almost all are homeless, have a substance dependency, a history of offending and poor mental health. http://www.onenottingham.org.uk/

Cares For Kids – ON March Board
The Board received an interim funding update and a request for a £2,000 further contribution for Cares for Kids - breakfast clubs. Cares for Kids continues to seek ongoing support to continue almost 50 breakfast clubs in Nottingham schools.
Science and Curiosity Festival. – ON March Board

Centenary Cities – ON March Board
The On Board welcomed Rachel Armitage from Centenary Cities, an initiative which celebrates 100 years of some women being able to vote. This 2018 campaign promotes gender equality 100 years on. Centenary Cities has held events across the city to encourage women to vote and hosted a high profile debate in the Council House on women’s experiences 100 years on. The Board agreed to stay engaged with the project and to promote the upcoming plans. Amongst the future plans are advice project on voting and how to vote.

Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse

One Nottingham hosted a workshop for the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse that was set up because of serious concerns that some organisations had failed, and were continuing to fail, to protect children from sexual abuse.
The purpose of the inquiry is:
- To consider the extent to which State and non-State institutions have failed in their duty of care to protect children from sexual abuse and exploitation.
- To consider the extent to which those failings have since been addressed.
- To identify further action needed to address any failings identified.
- To consider the steps which it is necessary for State and non-State institutions to take in order to protect children from such abuse in the future.
- To publish a report with recommendations The Independent Investigation into Child Sexual Exploitation will look into the failure to protect children in the care of Nottingham and Nottinghamshire Councils. A summary of the workshop which took place is available at http://www.onenottingham.org.uk/

Launch of the National Literacy Hub in Nottingham

Join One Nottingham, The National Literacy Trust, Nottingham City Council and Small Steps Big Changes to find out about literacy priorities in Nottingham and how the National Literacy Trust Hub will support these to create better outcomes for children.
The Nottingham Hub will encompass a range of programmes and initiatives, with a particular focus on working with families in the early years to ensure children are ready to start school, improving transition from primary to secondary school, equipping students with skills for employment.

Planning Permission Granted for Nottingham College's City Hub

| Nottingham College is being refocused around an employment led culture that aims to get our students into work, either directly or via higher education, with a clear aspiration to promote personal independence. Development of the new City Hub campus, as a state-of-the-art facility, linking employers and students under the same roof, is a pivotal step in this journey. |

Become a Trustee for The Sustainable Travel Collective
The Sustainable Travel Collective Ltd is a long standing Nottingham based charity which seeks to influence the future of environmentally friendly and active travel choices.
The Travel Collective are seeking up to three new Trustees to join the Board of Trustees. The Board meets 4 times a year in Nottingham plus occasional meetings to help shape and develop the charity’s strategy. This is an unpaid, non-executive role for applicants who want to support the Sustainable Travel Collective Ltd by becoming passionate and effective advocates for the charity. Nottingham City Homes 'Make a Difference' Fund
Nottingham City Homes (NCH) aims to inspire and support local community groups to ‘make a difference’ through the delivery of creative and innovative projects, which will have a lasting and positive impact in the community and illustrate the positive relationships between NCH and its customers.
Applicants can apply for funding for their project from £250 up to £2,000. In order for your application to be successful you must provide evidence that the funding will directly benefit a proportion of NCH residents. Arts Council England Strategy Consultation
The Arts Council England (ACE), which is a major supporter and funder of councils, has launched a public conversation around its next ten-year strategy for 2020-30. The online platform, which will be live until 12 April 2018, invites views on a range of topics, including how ACE can strengthen the social impact of its work; how publicly funded arts organisations can become more accessible and diverse; and how the sector should respond to the uncertainty created by Brexit, reduced public funding and the impact of new technologies. Award-winning campaign helps Nottingham residents save friends from domestic abuse
|

An award-winning campaign has been launched across Nottingham and Nottinghamshire this month that aims to help people save their friends and family from the harm of domestic abuse. #HelpAFriend gives residents simple tools to support and assist the people close to them, so that they can reach vital domestic abuse services. Nottingham-based charity Equation is running #HelpAFriend this year after winning the 2017 Marketing Campaign of the Year Award from the East Midlands Chamber of Commerce for the campaign last spring. Equation hopes #HelpAFriend will increase the number of women calling the local 24-hour domestic and sexual violence helpline (0808 800 0340), which received over 10,000 calls last year. Over 350,000 people will receive messages from the attention-grabbing campaign, which includes a creative giveaway of over 2,000 promotional teabags with the helpline number printed on, as well as animated social media videos, poster billboards and bus ads.

Nottingham Citizens 2018 Accountability Assembly

This May, Nottingham Citizens will gather over 800 of their community members in Nottingham's Albert Hall to bring to fruition their current streams of work, most notably a large piece of county-wide research into hate crime. Young people have created poetry, installation, drawing, photography, collage, digital and multi-sensory artworks to explore journeys and identity, and to share their personal responses to an international exhibition.

Roger McGough CBE and Jackie Kay MBE join line-up of the third Nottingham Poetry Festival

The annual Nottingham Poetry Festival is back – running between 20th April – 29th April with Roger McGough, Jackie Kay and Hollie McNish among the headliners. Building on the success of the two previous Nottingham Poetry Festivals and working closely with the Nottingham poetry community, Nottingham Poetry Festival 2018 is being backed by Nottingham Trent University (NTU) and Confetti Media Group (CMG) with support once again from Castle Rock Brewery and Nottingham UNESCO City of Literature. Notts TV are also back on board and will be producing a series of poetry specials for broadcast on the channel. Nottingham’s UNESCO City of Literature Team offer enthusiastic and invaluable support, ideas and resources that enable the festivals continued development. Produced by Nottingham born poet Henry Normal, Craig Chettle (CMG) and Tommy Rosley (Hockley Hustle), the festival presents a diverse programme of over 50 events spanning 10 days combining some of the most renowned poets in the country and showcasing Nottingham’s lyrical literary scene at its best.
Georgina Wilding, Nottingham's Young Poet Laureate will have poetry banners installed around the city commissioned by the Hockley Hustle & Young Hustler music and art festival. With so much happening, audiences and the Nottingham poetry community are invited to a special FESTIVAL PREVIEW, hosted by LeftLion Magazine editor, Bridie Squires at the Fox and Grapes in Sneinton on 5th April from 7.00pm.

Take part in a Guinness World Record attempt whilst dressed as Robin Hood!

Nottingham Hospitals Charity has set its sights on breaking a Guinness World Record this spring and is calling on the businesses of Nottinghamshire for their help! The Charity is aiming to break the World Record for the largest gathering of people dressed as Robin Hood. The Nottingham legend is also mascot of Nottingham Children’s Hospital and the face of Charity’s Big Appeal, which aims to raise £4 million over four years to help young patients and their families at the Children’s Hospital.
To break the World Record, the Charity is hosting Robin’s Big World Record, a free community fun day, at Wollaton Park on Bank Holiday Monday 7th May 2018. Over 1,500 people from across the county are expected to attend the event, all with the aim of being a part of Nottingham history, and raising money for Nottingham Children’s Hospital, which is based at the Queen’s Medical Centre.
