Firefighter Cancer Initiative Investigator
Receives Cancer Research Award
The American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) has selected Dr. Alberto Caban-Martinez as a recipient of the 2018 AACR Minority and Minority-Serving Institution Faculty Scholar in Cancer Research Award. Dr. Caban-Martinez will be presenting his research examining cancer screening practices between Latino and non-Latino Florida firefighters at the 2018 AACR annual meeting in Chicago next month.

Publishes New Manuscript
Firefighter Cancer Initiative investigator Dr. Tyler Harrison led the development of the manuscript Firefighters attitudes, norms, beliefs, barriers, and behaviors toward post-fire decontamination processes in an era of increased cancer risk. The manuscript was published in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Hygiene and has been designated to be part of the journal's "Action Level" issue. The manuscript details findings from a survey conducted with 485 firefighters on the topic of post-fire decontamination practices. 
Fire Protection Research Foundation Report on Contamination Control Now Available
This month, the National Fire Protection Association's Fire Protection Research Foundation released a report titled Recommendations for Developing and Implementing a Fire Service Contamination Control Campaign. The report reviews recommendations for addressing contamination within the fire service on a national level through an educational campaign. The report also outlines steps for implementing those recommendations, including the development of a website with a literature database and lists of of best practices. For the full report, click here

Annual Cancer Symposium at Florida State Fire College

Firefighter Cancer Initiative investigators will be presenting at the Annual Cancer Symposium at the Florida State Fire College alongside the Firefighter Cancer Support Network and the City of Delray Beach Fire Department. Investigators will be discussing the initiative, findings, and future directions.

FDIC International - Fire Department Instructor's Conference 

Firefighter Cancer Initiative investigators will also be presenting alongside the Firefighter Cancer Support Network at an FDIC International workshop titled CANCER: It's time to Change! For more information on the conference and workshop, click here.
