Exciting Research Marks Start of 2018 for ACEMS

Research with an Impact

2018 is off to a fast, and exciting start for ACEMS researchers across the country.

Already, ACEMS researchers have been featured in top journals like the Journal of the American Statistical Association and Science Advances.

Their research includes virtual populations for cardiac research, using social media to track the flu, and working with a United Nations group on big data.

Here are some of the highlights so far:

- Jacinta Holloway & Kerrie Mengersen (QUT) (pictured above center) travelled to Colombia to take part in a UN Working group to help countries around the world unlock the valuable information hidden inside satellite imagery data. The UN Task Team released a handbook for National Statistical Offices (NSOs) considering using satellite imagery
- Kevin & Pam Burrage, Brodie Lawson, and Chris Drovandi (QUT) (pictured above left) had their research on Virtual Populations for Cardiac Research Published in Science Advances

- Rob Hyndman (Monash) (pictured above right) had his research on a statistical breakthrough for forecasting published in the Journal of the American Statistical Association

- Robert Kohn and Matias Quiroz (UNSW) also had their research published in the Journal of the American Statistical Association. Their paper was titled, "Speeding Up MCMC by Efficient Data Subsampling."

- Lewis Mitchell (Adelaide) just had his research on how public twitter data can predict flu outbreaks highlighted by Fresh Science, which is a national competition helping early-career researchers share their stories of discovery.
Stats in Sports Research Workshop
ACEMS, in collaboration with the Queensland Academy of Sport (QAS) and the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) hosted a two day event last month exploring modern statistical methods and challenges for sports research.

In this video, participants talk about the workshop and why it's good that these collaborations between researchers in sports sciences and the mathematical sciences are happening.

World Science Festival

ACEMS Deputy Director Kerrie Mengersen (left in the picture) moderated a big event at last week's World Science Festival in Brisbane.

Hundreds of people turned out to see event titled, "The Language of the Universe: Can Mathematics Explain Everything."
