The inaugural Te Mātāuru ki Tainui investment round opened on the 18th of December 2017 and closed on the 26th of January 2018, Te Mātāwai received a total of 37 applications. The Tainui Pae Motuhake (Ngā Paemanu) assessed applications and recommended that 25 be approved by the Board. These recommended applications were approved and confirmed by the Te Mātāwai Board because they represented an equitable affiliation across homes and communities throughout Tainui and because they met the priorities outlined in the Te Mātāuru ki Tainui investment plan 2017-2018. Contracts are currently being issued to the successful applicants of the Tainui investment round. We will tell you more about the successful applicants once all contracts have been signed. These contracts will be evaluated in line with the Te Mātāuru evaluation framework to measure the success and will be monitored to ensure te reo Māori is restored as a nurturing first language throughout Tainui homes and communities. |

Te Mātāwai would also like to advise the descendants in Mātaatua and Te Waipounamu that Te Mātāuru ki Mātaatua and Te Mātāuru ki Te Waipounamu will soon be opening. Both investment plans have been approved by the board of Te Mātāwai and a formal announcement of the opening of these rounds will be made in the coming weeks. In the meantime please complete pre-registration in anticipation of these two rounds opening.

The final two Iwi Clusters Te Arawa and Te Tai Tokerau along with the national Cluster of Te Reo Tukutuku are currently in the process of finalising and confirming their investment plans. Annoucements regarding these rounds will be made in due course.

Te Mātātupu: Research
Te Mātāwai commissioned the services of the New Zealand Council for Education Research (NZCER) to create a database of te reo Māori revitalisation activities and resources developed across the country in the past five years. We are still collecting information for the database through an online survey He Reo Ora that we launched on Tuesday 27 February 2018. We would like to encourage you all to participate and share with us your te reo Māori revitalisation activity or resource the survey only takes 10 minutes to complete.

Te Mātāwai’s full research programme will map out the information needed for Māori language revitalisation and will support the investments being made in homes and communities. Kingi Kiriona is the co-founder and managing director of TupuOra Education and Development Ltd, where he has led the development of key te reo Māori revitalisation initiatives both regionally and nationally. He is also a former broadcaster, working in print and iwi radio before taking up a career in television with TVNZ, as a reporter, director and Māori language consultant on programmes Marae and Te Karere.

Te Ture mō Te Reo Māori 2016 provides Te Mātāwai alongside the Minister for Māori Development and the Minister for Finance a joint leadership and oversight role of the Māori Television Service. Te Mātāwai also makes nominations to Māori Development for the boards of Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori and Te Māngai Pāho.
