Plan for Mental Health Month!

May 2018 is Mental Health Month!

Since 1949, Mental Health America and our affiliates across the country have led the observance of May as Mental Health Month by reaching millions of people through the media, local events and screenings.

We welcome faith-based organizations to join  in spreading the word that mental health is something everyone should care about by using the May is Mental Health Month toolkit materials and conducting awareness activities.

One in four adults experiences a mental illness in a given year.  Yet, nearly two-thirds do not seek treatment.

Especially men.  And, stigma is often to blame.  It’s time to talk about mental health.

A word for men!

Over the past thirty years, the rate of suicide among men has been three to four times that of women.  Traditionally, however, men have shied away from talking about their feelings as it is viewed as negative and weak.

Bring Change 2 Mind, in partnership with Brandon Marshall’s Project 375, launched #StrongerThanStigma to raise awareness around the unique challenges that men face when discussing mental health, to encourage open dialogue, and to promote help seeking behavior.

We celebrate the life of Elsie Weyrauch who passed away on March 25, 2018.  She was a pioneer and a heroine to all who knew her determination and tireless work in suicide prevention with her family and loving husband, Jerry.

She was always ready to listen to any person who needed her and her compassion was overflowing to everyone.   She reminds us every day:

Pain falls, drop by drop,
Upon the heart---
Until, in our despair,
And against our will,
Wisdom comes---
By the awe-ful grace of God.

We educate, empower, provide resources and consultation to ALL faith based communities so that they can bring awareness, reduce stigma and provide hope about mental illness and suicide prevention.
