Did You Know?

To date, Grameen PrimaCare has received over $200,000 from the City of New York as part of the Immigrant Health Initiative. Through the use of these funds, we have been able to work towards providing health care and decreasing health disparities among foreign-born New Yorkers.

The Zumba Challenge

VidaSana recently held an exciting weight loss initiative called "My Zumba Challenge" during the months of February and March. 22 members participated in seven weekly Zumba classes offered by our volunteer patient leaders. During the course of the challenge, the weight of participants was monitored and healthy eating/physical activity education and advice were offered. The activity was a great success for our VidaSana community, and we congratulate all who participated -- with a special congratulations to Joanne and Monica who both lost 12 pounds during this eight-week initiative!

Raising Breast Cancer Awareness

We recently launched a pilot of a breast cancer initiative with a small sample of Grameen America (GA) borrowers in the Bronx. Two breast cancer survivors from the GA community were identified, and those women were trained in “telling their story” to their fellow GA borrowers. A select group of GA Centers are getting brief presentations from the survivors, as well as breast cancer and important screening information. When necessary, they are being referred for services. The initial feedback from this initiative has been incredibly positive and the survivors are feeling empowered in sharing their stories as more women get screenings.

VidaSana Presentation Showcases Health Disparities in Jackson Heights

VidaSana was recently invited to to present our program at a symposium at the United Nations International School in Manhattan. Entitled “In Sickness and In Wealth,” the goal of the symposium was to raise awareness about health disparities in New York City. Dr. Diana brought several VidaSana patients to present alongside her as they discussed health disparities as they relate to neighborhoods around the city -- especially Jackson Heights. Students at the school showed great interest in the VidaSana program and many asked how they might be able to help better serve our members in Queens.

1,250 VidaSana Members and Growing!

Grameen VidaSana recently hit another exciting enrollment milestone -- 1,250 members! Since opening our doors over three years ago, we have been privileged to watch our membership grow and thrive in Jackson Heights. Providing the VidaSana community with quality health care and a safe, welcoming environment continues to be our priority, and reaching more women is always our goal. Next up -- 1,500 members!

Promoting Our Unique Health Care Model

VidaSana recently had the opportunity to host a group of second-year pediatric and family medicine residents from Montefiore at VidaSana. Dr. Diana, having previously taught a course at Montefiore on health systems, was able to educate these residency students on the unique model used at VidaSana, as well as other alternative models used for primary care. The residents were able to understand the importance of a patient-centered model, and how teamwork positively impacts the workflow and quality of care at practices similar to ours.
