Newsletter
Wednesday 11th April 2018

Ngā mihi a koutou katoa te whānau whanui o te Kura Pokapu o Whakatu –

Greetings to friends and family of Nelson Central School, and welcome to the last newsletter of the term.

We especially welcome Lehansa to Room 9 and Cronos and Daisy to Renwick 2.

We sadly farewell Maheedi, Morgan and Harper and Johanna and hope you quickly settle in to your new homes and schools.

We are very proud of the strong, resilient and supportive community surrounding the work we do here at Nelson Central School - and recognise the huge importance of you all  in supporting our tamariki. We are calling everyone’s support early next term to help us raise money to develop an outside whare for powhiri , school assemblies and events We will need a significant amount of money to make this a reality. .. so...

On the first Sunday after we return to school next term we are holding our big whole school fundraiser - the Central Challenge.

We only have two such events per year and expect each family to support these with their time and also by publicising the event as widely as you are able.

Please set aside May 6 to help, and let your teacher or class parent rep know you are available.

Congratulations to all our fabulous swimmers who have competed well in recent local, and regional events.  All of those involved have been great ambassadors for our school.

Our councillors also play a significant role  in our school.

Keep an eye on our facebook page to find information from them, about an event they have organised to raise money for those affected by Cyclone Gita. This is scheduled for this Friday and I  know you will be as generous as you are able, for such a great cause.

We wish Rooms 1 & 2 well on their Outdoor education adventure to Mistletoe Bay this week - and look forward to hearing af all their successes upon their return.

Finally I wish you all a restful and enjoyable school holiday break with your tamariki.

We will look forward to a school full of eager, refreshed learners returning on Monday 30 April.

Ngā mihi

Pip Wells

IMPORTANT NOTE:
Heritage school photo orders need to be returned to the school office by the end of the week. Thank you
Room 9 were inspired by a recent visit to the Suter Art Gallery when we saw the Sally Burton exhibition, Pale History.  We asked our buddies from Room 2 to help us create our own sculptures out of driftwood.  We had a very creative time practising our key competencies managing self, relating to others, thinking and participating and contributing.  We think the results are amazing!  Creations can be checked out on our Blog.
Here are Felix and Isabella sharing their thoughts about the driftwood turtle they made with their buddies.
Kapa haka is back in full swing for children of Te Pouahi who have committed to weekly after school practices. The tamariki have been learning new waiata and singing some old ones too.  They are preparing for a regional kapa haka festival that is being held later in the year.  The tamariki are implementing the attitudes and values of our Te Pouahi graduate profile.  These are werohia - challenge, whanaungatanga - caring and working with others, Rangatiratanga - leadership and Hīranga - striving for excellence through the realms of kapa haka.  Kei runga noa atu koutou!

Kowhai Corner
This week we are taking a look at how you can support your child’s writing at home:
Make writing fun
  • Help your child write an alphabet letter, then go letter hunting in your house or in a book to find that letter
  • Let your child see you writing – you can use your first language
  • Encourage them to write shopping lists or make birthday cards
  • Water and a paintbrush on a dry path and a stick on sand are fun ways to write letters and words.
  • Don’t worry if your child’s letters or words are sometimes backwards or misspelt at this age. The important thing is that they have fun writing at home and are making an effort.

Give them reasons to write

  • Write to each other. Write notes to your child and leave them in interesting places, like their lunch box. Ask them to write a reply
  • Help them email, text or write to family, whānau or friends
  • Work with them to put labels on special things – like the door to their room or their toy box.
  • Display their work. Put it on the fridge. Be proud of it. Share it with others.

LOST PROPERTY - PLEASE CLAIM!

Lost Property will be laid outside Room 9 this week when weather permits.  PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE encourage your child to take a look to see if there are any items belonging to them.  We would love to see as many items returned to their rightful owners before the end of this week At the end of term they will be donated to worthy causes.  Thank you.

Mrs Harrison’s (Christine’s) Bottles

This stall is being resurrected from the dark ages to be part of the Rogain and Mini Gala on Sunday 6th May.

Some past pupils who are now parents may remember this stall as an institution at many past galas years ago.

This is how it works.

Bottle or jars of new produce are donated. In the old days this involved sweet drinks etc. and jars of lollies but now in our better healthier environment we are looking for maybe jars of small toys, bottles of shampoo, healthy drinks, jars of chutney, hand cream etc.…The healthy possibilities are endless.

After collection, all bottles are numbered. On the day the punters buy a numbered ticket. They cannot see the numbers on the bottles. When all tickets are sold the bottles may be collected. It is a lucky dip at this stage finding out which bottle or jar matches your number. Everyone gets to take away something for their money.

Please support our Mini Gala by donating a bottle or jar of new produce or filling jar full of goodies such as stationery, small novelty toys or hair accessories. The possibilities are endless. If you buy a ticket you may even get your bottle back!!!! Tickets will be $2.00.

All donated bottles can be left in your child’s classroom for collection.

Thank you for supporting the last hurrah for Mrs Harrison's Bottles

Let’s see if we can get over a hundred bottles.
