Upper Valley NPT
Ring 101 for non-emergencies

For non-urgent Police enquiries either telephone 101 or email  (in an emergency always dial 999)

The fear of anti-social behaviour in the Upper Valley has halved since 2008.

Fact: there were over a thousand fewer victims of crime this year compared to last, making Calderdale one of the safest places to live in West Yorkshire...

Burglaries increase when it gets dark

To report someone you suspect of growing cannabis, contact your local Neighbourhood Police Team on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

There is a new national phone number “105” will be launched by electricity network operators for customers to call should they need to report or get information about a power cut in their area.
Key points to note about this service are:
· Dialling 105 will put customers through to their local electricity network operator – the company that manages the cables, power lines and substations that deliver electricity into homes and businesses in their area.
· 105 is just one of the ways that customers can contact their electricity network operator. They can also contact them by phone or via their website, and most network operators are on social media too.
· 105 is a free service for people in England, Scotland and Wales.
· Customers can call 105 no matter who they buy their electricity from.
· Customers can also call 105 if they spot damage to electricity power lines and substations that could put anyone in danger. If there’s a serious immediate risk, they should call the emergency services too.

Banking telephone Scams

• If you are concerned about the source of a banking call, hang up. Make sure if you call your bank to check it was them, before you make the call check for a dialling tone BEFORE dialling their number. The number will be on printed on your bank statements.

• Check your statements carefully and report anything suspicious to the bank or credit company concerned.

• Your bank will never come to your home address to collect you or to collect you bank cards. Some scammers will tell you that you have been a subjected to bank fraud and ask for your pin number. NEVER EVER give this number to anyone. Your bank will never ask customer for these details.

Annual Spring Clean in Hebden Royd

The annual Spring Clean event, organised by Hebden Royd Town Council, proved to be a real community get together for the Mytholmroyd Station Partnership; our twenty nine volunteers included six Mytholmroyd Flood wardens – could it be the word of ‘muffins’ had been the necessary inducement, I wonder?
Why ever, or for whatever reason it was a happy and fun Saturday morning for us; we covered a large area of Mytholmroyd, including the station area, the Good Shepherd’s embankment, our community centre, the village green and library area, St Michael’s cemetery. The bowling green was not neglected and neither was Dale View and surroundings.
Grateful thanks to all the volunteers, including our muffin-maker Sue Norton, for giving up the time to help keep Magnificent Mytholmroyd bright and sparkling – if only till Monday, when all the building works start again! To Hebden Royd Town Council’s own Emma, Olivia and Rebekah, thank you.

Friends of Centre Vale Park – the transformation begins

Following the Friends of Centre Vale Parks successful bid, the lottery funded project for Centre Vale Park is now underway. The woodland paths and the coach house area are being transformed and local primary schools are coming to discover what’s happening and to learn more about the ecology and archaeology of the park.
In March Children from Todmorden C of E school and St Josephs have enjoyed visits to the park starting off looking at the coach house area where the new  trail will start from and asking questions about the design of the trail and the building work to make the coach house accessible. They enjoyed some silent time to listen to the sounds of the park and remark on any new sounds that they heard since their last visit.
At their next visit they will bring bird feeders that they have made using pine cones, keep an eye out for the spring birds enjoying them.

Check on Crime Statistics in Your Area

Following a comment made at recent Neighbourhood Watch meeting, we can now share the link required to check crime figures in your area. The data is updated as regularly as possible but may be a couple of months behind. Opening the link here will bring up the screen where you can enter your postcode to see the figures in your area. It's also good to know that non-emergency crimes can now be reported online.

New Defibrillator installed in Hebden Bridge

Thanks to a £500 Calder Ward Forum grant and a donation from the family of Christopher O’Brien (a former Hebden Royd Town Council Mayor), Hebden Bridge Community Association have unveiled a new defibrillator at the Town Hall that can be used in an emergency 24 hours a day, all year round.
There are other defibrillators in Hebden Bridge but this is the first in the town to be accessible 24/7 and 365 days a year: it’s located on the front of the Town Hall.
To mark the event the Community Association partnered with local first aid trainer Amy Gault from Splat Training to run a free first aid awareness / training open day. This is one of many such events in the pipeline as part of the Association’s commitment to increasing the town’s resilience in a range of health and wellbeing areas under the Staying Well programme: such as the Association recently taking on the role of being lead for Dementia Friendly Hebden Bridge.
Please contact Graham Mynott at the Association if you want to know more.

NCS Calderdale Social Action

NCS is a 3 week government funded scheme for 16-17 year olds that aims to promote social cohesion, develop life skills and give back to the local community. During the third week, students must take part in a local community project, completing 30 hours of volunteering each. Groups are between 12-15 in size and are supervised by 2 members of staff. We have previously worked with organisations such as Over-gate, Calder Valley Flood Relief, Social Services, Treesponsibility, YMCA and many others. We are always looking for different organisations that need help where our teenagers can contribute and make a difference, such as help with awareness campaigns, renovating youth centres and community gardens, city clean ups, running sessions at hospices and other practical projects. The volunteering weeks fall between 9th July – 24th August. If your organisation is interested in working with NCS this summer, please get in touch on the following details: Lizzie Saunderson – lizziesaunderson@bradfordcityfc.co.uk or 07469234066.

TRANSITIONS - Developing the creative capacity of Calderdale

A 509 Arts – Landlines and Watermarks Legacy Programme.

Transitions is a series of workshops, discussions and presentations for arts organisations,
individual artists and people working with the communities of Calderdale. Funded by the Community Foundation for Calderdale, Transitions will take place across the Calder Valley in 2018 and is designed to explore issues relevant to anyone working in the cultural sector. It will build on 509 Arts’ Landlines and Watermarks programme that explored the impact of the devastating floods of 2015 (www.landlinesandwatermarks.org).
Many of the sessions will have invited speakers and all will have space for lively discussion, information sharing and informal networking over tea and biscuits. There will be regular opportunities to share thoughts, ideas and plans with others and at the end of the year there will be a bit of a shindig where we look back over 2018 and make plans for 2019. In addition to the regular programme, there will also be opportunities for one-to-one capacity building and business planning sessions for local creative businesses and sole traders. Details to be announced in the near future.
Transitions sessions are free to all local groups, organisations and individuals. To find out more contact Paula J Horton: 07810 541907 or email paula.horton@509arts.co.uk

Warden's Update

It's been a busy time for the Community Wardens who have been working across the Upper Valley. Here are just two of the many tasks they have undertaken this month.

Alex, Andre and Andy from the Safer, Cleaner, Greener team joined the Upper Valley Neighbourhood team in blitzing graffiti from Hebden Bridge.  As the weather is getting nicer, the team want to ensure the area is looking it’s best ready for tourists that travel far and wide to visit this beautiful town and for its residents.

The Upper Valley Neighbourhood team visited Wainstalls recently with our Speed Indicator Device (SID).  Whilst we were there, members of staff from the local School popped out and thanked us for acting on their concerns.  The results we collated did prove that speeding was an issue in this particular area, so these will be passed on to the relevant partners to take action.

Neighbourhood Surveys

Members from the Upper Valley Partnership carried out a doorstep survey on Oakville Road and between Thistle Bottom and Woodland Villas on the A646 to consult with local people about issues which concerned them. We spoke to 35% of the households, 100% said they liked living in the area, over 97% felt safe and over 77% of those we spoke to had no concerns that they wanted to report.
the primary issues raised were to do with speeding, worries about burglaries and worries about flooding.
The consultation Team on this occasion included Fire Service Officers, Calderdale Officials and Community Wardens. In addition to asking you for your views, we also offered referrals to the Council’s Staying Well programme, the Fire Services’ Safe and Well programme as well as replacement recycling and waste containers where requested.
Individual problems included speeding, checks for which will be carried out initially by the Community Wardens, fly tipping reported , request for investigation of a previously flooding culvert, reports of faulty street lighting, request for replacement of anti-skid surfaces etc. which have been raised with the appropriate departments and partners.
