MGA Giant Traveling Missouri Maps

The Missouri Geographic Alliance houses three giant maps of Missouri, which are available to be borrowed for educational settings. Both were created with the intention to be walked on (while wearing clean socks.) The topographic map created in Missouri with funding from the Missouri GIS Advisory Council and Missouri 4-H measures 15 feet by 15 feet. The two State Giant Traveling Maps created and supported by National Geographic measure 17 feet by 21 feet.

These maps are fantastic tools to get youth and educators on the map and all over Missouri from the comfort of their gymnasium or classroom. Along with the map, you will receive an educational tool trunk. If you visit our MGA website (mga.missouri.edu/), there is more information in the Lessons tab underneath the Giant Traveling Map drop down, you will find example lesson plans created by National Geographic and Missouri educators. A list of what all you will receive with the map is found here. Just contact us if you would like to reserve a giant map and if you have any questions about the maps.

Strengthening First Nations/Native American Learning in the Classroom

June 24-28th

How
can non-Indigenous teachers responsibly teach Indigenous history and incorporate contemporary Indigenous perspectives throughout their curriculum? During a 4-day transboundary summer workshop on Coast Salish territories on the Salish Sea, we will work together to critically reflect on common challenges and build thoughtful practices when teaching Indigenous content. We will travel across the US-Canada border to spend two days in Vancouver, learning with curriculum developed in Canada. We will take an educators’ tour of the Museum of Anthropology, visit the Musqueam Cultural Center and learn from the First Nations Education Steering Committee, among other experiential learning opportunities. We will return to Bellingham and learn from the Lummi Nation with Indigenous educators and develop our own abilities to incorporate the Since Time Immemorial curriculum into our classrooms.
