Ethical Banking
Maybe you've seen the Netflix documentary Dirty Money, which investigated the extent of the ethical and legal breaches by HSBC, who willfully ignored that terrorist groups and Mexican drug cartels were among their customers. You may have also read about ethical and legal breaches by Wells Fargo, Deutsche Bank, and others. In less extreme examples, some banking customers and institutions have decided to avoid investments in industries they deem harmful, such as oil and weapons.
According to Goran Jeras, the dominant forms of banking “powered by purely financial returns and profits” are ignoring broader ethical concerns and responsibilities. Do you know where your money goes after you’ve deposited it? Is your money being used in ways you would consider harmful? Is your money benefiting your community? What ethical banking and financing choices do you have?
There's still time to RSVP to our discussion on ethical banking practices this Tuesday, April 10 at 6:30 at CCEPA.
