From the desk of David Smith- Senior Deputy Headmaster

What morals and values do our boys learn by simply attending St David’s that are not explicitly included in the various official curricula? The culture of St David’s is how we do things around here, and what we value. Besides our underlying Marist Values, one of the things we value at St David’s is boys being identified as Gentlemen, Scholars and Sportsmen. The St David’s culture needs to ensure that the hidden curriculum - the unwritten, unofficial, values and perspectives that the boys learn by association and attending St David’s, are indeed the correct ones.
Being a gentleman involves many actions and one is respecting others: respecting differences in others – a gentleman treats everyone equally and does not discriminate. He respects differences in race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, politics, culture and physical appearance. A gentleman respects the rights and property of others, he respects the environment: he does not litter, and he understands the need to get involved in the service of others.
At St David’s we value the concept of boys acting in a scholarly fashion – this encompasses not only valuing the formal academic curriculum but also the performing and visual arts. To achieve success as a scholar a culture of conscientiousness must be part of the hidden curriculum. Research is pointing to conscientiousness as an extremely important trait in terms of determining future success, both in a career and personally. To achieve as a scholar the boys need to be efficient, do extra reading and research, assess the quality of information, question, be punctual, organized, neat, and systematic. Our boys need to be encouraged to think independently, creatively and logically.

St David’s encourages all boys to be sportsmen. Our boys should be playing sport for the love of the game and the joy that ensues from playing and competing with teammates. The traditions of the various sporting codes, respect for opponents, modesty in victory, graciousness in defeat and the need for commitment must be part of the sporting culture. Sportsmen might be athletically skilled or even be the star of the team, but if the sportsman does not have respect, manners or the ability to be coached and accountable, they lack the most important skills to be successful. Those should be the way we do things on the sports field, is should be what we value.
While the primary focus of educational institutions will focus on standard curriculum items, parents and educators must continually promote universal values, such as honesty, caring, respect, conscientiousness and concern. It is critical that educators and parents model the actions that we hope to see from the young men in our care. They must be role models is how to do things and always make a clear statement on what they value.

As we move seamlessly into the winter sports programme, I am always amazed by the change of energy that follows. There is a definite sense of excitement and hope that our teams will perform well in both rugby and hockey. Unfortunately, many schools are guilty of elevating these sports to levels that many argue are educationally unsound. In some cases a school’s overall success is determined by how their respective first teams perform during this season.

St David’s at the World Choir Games

From 4 to 14 July 2018 Pretoria will be abuzz with what is possibly the biggest music event in the world, judged by the number of active participants. Close to 40 000 choir singers from around the globe will descend on Gauteng to showcase their abilities in and love for choral music in the World Choir Games.
It is the first time that this event will take place on African soil and in musical terms is nothing less than South Africa hosting the “World Cup” of choir. For eleven days some of the world’s most respected classical musicians will adjudicate a veritable fanfare of competitions and festival performances that run the full gamut of genres from pure classical, to contemporary musical theatre, to dance music, to traditional folklore.
We are very excited to announce that St David’s will be participating at this prestigious event. The Chamber Choir has proven itself to be a choir of excellence with a variety of exciting and trend-setting performances under its belt. Since its inception five years ago the choir has represented the school in a variety of ways. St David’s is now known for its annual Valentines tours to girls schools as well as for hosting the most entertaining combined events with the best choirs from around Johannesburg.
The 2018 Chamber Choir is working very hard to be ready for their performances at the Games. Their new repertoire is very exciting and is virtually bursting at the seams to be performed.
In addition to the above we are also so excited to announce that our warm-up performances for the Games will be hosted by none other than Richard Cock. He will join us in the Champagnat on the 24th and 25th of May for a showcase of our choir and band and will be conducting the choir for some of their pieces. Please keep your eyes open for this exciting event.
As our boys work towards this exceptional event, we would like to wish them well as they spend the countless amount of rehearsal hours putting their hearts on the line and making their vision for the choir come to life. Good luck, boys!

REFLECTION

EASTER MESSAGE:

God has raised Jesus from the dead, and we are all witnesses to this fact.  All the people of Israel, then, are to know for sure that it is this Jesus, whom you nailed to the cross, that God has made Lord and Messiah.  Acts 2:32-36
Let us pray:
Almighty, ever living God, you offer the covenant of reconciliation to humankind in the mystery of Easter.  Grant that what we celebrate in worship, we may carry out in our lives.  We make our prayer through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Fr Teboho Matseke

MySchool Card
NOW AVAILABLE IN APP FORM

MySchool Card has, for many years, been one of the best and most consistent sources of funds for the St David’s PTA.  Receiving income from MySchool Card requires no effort on the PTA’s part and yet it typically draws in R 25 000-R 30 000 per month.  Obviously, the PTA’s success with MySchool Card is dependent on our parents making St David’s one of their MySchool Card beneficiaries, and on them shopping at MySchool Card partners.

Further information and MySchool Card application information can be found on the St David’s App, under the PTA section.  However, you can also just register on-line by CLICKING HERE  or you can download the MySchool App from the relevant App Store.

We use these funds for the betterment of our school, with our most recent project including new Junior Prep readers, and upcoming, a Science Lab for the Prep School.
