Will you help the Friends to help the Gardens?

A message from the President of the Friends and the Chair of the Public Fund Management Committee

With the end of the financial year approaching, Barbara Podger and I would like to thank the many Friends who have supported our efforts to raise funds for the Public Fund of the Friends. In 2017-18 the Public Fund was focused on the Paperbark Treehouse and two scientific projects: a collecting trip to north Queensland, and the digitising of lichen-type specimens at the Centre for Australian National Biodiversity Research. There are very informative articles about all three projects in the April Fronds newsletter.

As of 31 March our campaign has raised over $27,000, about double the average amount raised during recent financial years. We now invite people who may not have donated so far this year to consider supporting the Public Fund with a tax deductible donation before 30 June.

In the short term, the Public Fund is supporting three new projects in support of science at the Gardens. The Public Fund management committee is also looking to mark the 50th anniversary of the ANBG in 2020. Information about the new projects follows below:

Conservation of Macadamia jansenii (Bulburin Nut Tree)

[Image of macadamia jansenii]Your contribution would help the Gardens with the long-term conservation of Macadamia jansenii (Bulburin Nut Tree) by securing genetically representative ex situ insurance populations. Macadamia jansenii is classified as endangered, with only 60 individuals recorded from a single location in Bulburin National Park in Queensland.

Several institutions will be involved, including ANBG. The Public Fund contribution will pay for propagation as well as for freight, promotion and interpretation of the collection at ANBG.

Supporting the work of the Seed Bank (two projects)

[Image of Dianne Deans and Annette Harry, Seed Curation Volunteers at the National Seed Bank, cleaning seed of Themeda triandra]The Public Fund has previously funded equipment for the National Seed Bank at ANBG. Your contribution would enable the Seed Bank to assess its important legacy collections and support the work of the volunteers.

One project involves using the X-ray machine at the Seed Bank to obtain x-ray images of as many of the legacy collections as possible, to inform curation and, if necessary, re-collection of these valuable species. Many of these collections are long overdue for viability testing but have too few seeds to allow standard germination/viability tests.

The Public Fund contribution will enable a contract technical officer to be employed to conduct the x-ray screening, databasing of results and curation of these legacy collections.

The other project will improve some of the essential seed bank equipment used by volunteers, students and staff at the National Seed Bank through equipment upgrades and improved capacity to move through curation workflows and increase outputs.

If you would like to help the Friends help the Gardens, there is information below on donating to the Public Fund.
