USA Today's Berkowitz via Twitter, "NCAA and conferences ask judge for at least a 7-month delay to the start of trial in lawsuits challenging limits on compensation for college athletes. NCAA wants trial in lawsuits challenging limits on compensation for college athletes (Alston/Jenkins) to begin no earlier than June 2019, rather than on Dec. 3. In seeking delay to start of trial in lawsuits challenging limits on college athlete compensation, NCAA cites scheduling issues for its lead outside lawyer and the prospect of rules changes rising from Rice-led Commission on College Basketball." (link)
Defense attorneys in the MBB-FBI developments are pushing for prosecutors to turn over evidence that includes interviews with current student-athletes & their families that could show they were not complicit in the allegations. Specifically, "Evidence that the coaches believed that the Universities implicitly (or explicitly) accepted NCAA rule violations as a cost of doing business would undercut the allegation that the purpose of the alleged conspiracy was to deceive and harm the Universities." Former AAU coach Augustine's testimony is at the center of this as he recently had charges dropped. A bit more. (link)
Former Louisville MBB AC Williams no longer has a one-year show-cause after his case was reversed by the NCAA Infractions Appeals Committee. Williams, who is currently coaching high school hoops in Florida, "I am relieved that this matter is now behind me and that I can concentrate on coaching and doing what I love. I have great respect for the men and women who helped me develop and learn at Louisville and appreciate that the outside professionals constituting the Appeals Committee properly scrutinized the NCAA’s effort to unfairly tarnish my reputation." Williams previously turned over bank & phone records to the NCAA in connection to the escort situation surrounding the Cardinals, but couldn't provide records for a phone that belonged to his mother. More from Williams' attorney, "Unfortunately, when the Enforcement Division ignores precedent, evidence and its own obligations to assure the integrity of the system, the goals established by the NCAA for intercollegiate athletics are undermined. Mr. Williams should not have been put through this ordeal. We are grateful to the Appeals Committee." (link)
Of note in a piece by the Wilson Times' Lewis as ECU has rehired MBB HC Dooley, "It’s not out of the realm of possibility for the six-month stint to end in September, only to have Hart appointed as the permanent AD as football coach Scottie Montgomery (who also ain’t from around here) encounters a make-or-break 2018 season. Baseball needs no intervention. Cliff Godwin, who is from around these parts, has that program on very stable footing as it chases an elusive berth to the College World Series." The future of the Pirates AD job will be interesting to monitor. (link)
Kansas State AD Taylor says there weren't many major challenges in his first year as the Wildcats boss, but points to the process of getting to know the donor base & KSU student-athletes. Notes how much he loves going to sport practices, which is something he hasn't gotten to do a ton of yet. Taylor says MBB HC Weber wants more years on his deal, not more money, doesn't see any truth to the "the Big 12 is falling apart" narrative, confident he can help there to be a smooth transition in the FB HC chair once longtime skipper Snyder decides to call it a career. (link); More from Manhattan as Kansas State students will no longer pay a privilege fee starting in 2019-20, one year earlier than planned. $200K was the planned revenue line, but Taylor remarks, "The phasing out of the student privilege fee is a key decision and step as we continue to build a strong partnership with our Student Governing Association and all of our students. The fees originally scheduled to be allocated to Athletics next year will allow SGA to fund other student organizations." (link)
Facility Notes: Notre Dame is ready to add a 111,400 square-foot indoor space to be used by FB & others programs that will include a large videoboard. FB HC Kelly: "Everything to re-create a gameday atmosphere. [...] The first thing that has to go up is the indoor facility, so we can train properly, but the nutrition and academic areas are very important too." (link); Momentum continues for UAB as a new Track & Field venue is approved for the Blazers. (link); Florida chooses Dimensional Innovations to help tie together its Facilities Master Plan with "consistency in wayfinding, signage & specialty graphics." (link)
A new apparel deal for Washington is down to Nike & Adidas. Huskies AD Cohen: "What we’re looking for in any partnership is an edge. How do we differentiate ourselves? That edge can come in a variety of different forms. And obviously a financial commitment from a partner is critical right now for us. We have a budget that we need to balance long-term and we need it healthy so we can support all 22 of our teams and do that at the highest level." Looks like Bevilacqua Helfant Ventures has been aiding UW & one industry source believes the deal could command $8M to $10M annually. Cohen says she felt more comfortable with the assistance of the third party given the magnitude of the agreement. Per the pair's contract, BHV could earn a couple million. (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
Memphis boss Bowen reviews his personnel leadership beliefs. Of note, "I am the most unimportant person by myself, so the idea is to hire as much talent around me as possible. [...] It's about your work, not about your job. [...] If you’re resistant to change in our business, you’re going to get left behind. [...] People tend to get caught up in what they do as opposed to who they are and how they be. [...] If I have a culture of pretenders, the byproduct is losing. If I have a culture of champions, the byproduct is winning." More. (link)

New Mexico State's $4.1M repayment plan to the university gets some timely revisions as the Aggies will only push $284K across the table in FY19, not the previously scheduled $903K. NMSU AD Moccia says the extra funds will allow his department to try to "keep up with the Jones." FB & MBB AC enhancements, as well as a second full-time fundraiser are how Moccia has earmarked to use the ~$600K. Former MBB HC Weir still owes the university between $375K to $500K & once paid, those funds will go directly to paying off some of the debt balance. (link)
Clemson IPTAY CEO Babb on changes to the federal tax code, "Obviously, we feel in this environment we’re very fortunate because we have (a) very strong athletic program, and right now we’re enjoying a time of great demand for the product. And obviously we hope that’s going to continue for a long time." South Carolina Senior Assoc. AD for Development Eigenbrot notes a call back in February that included around 200 peers from around the nation, "We’re definitely concerned about it; however, at this point, our annual fund numbers seem to be about where they were last year." (link)
Arizona Prez Robbins on MBB HC Miller agreeing to forego $1M of his longevity bonus if he's found to have broken NCAA rules or committed a crime, "We’ll only know the end of this when all these investigations are over. This is a firm commitment on both our part and coach’s part that we’re supporting him. [...] He put his money where his mouth was." Wildcats AD Heeke: "Sean was supportive of putting a hard marker on the table, saying 'I’m willing to stand behind this.' This was moving forward together as partners and representing our university and our basketball program. […] I don’t view us as under a cloud of anything. This is a tremendous basketball program and a fabulous athletic program and a world-class university. It will continue to be that going forward." Andeavor Logistics stock closed at $44.91 yesterday. (link)
Fresno State officials say they're prepared to substantially invest in MBB marketing funds to back the hire of San Diego State AC Hutson. Senior Assoc. AD for External Relations Ladwig points to videoing every step of introducing Hutson, "you'll see a television campaign, a social media campaign, you'll see a billboard campaign that will come out of this. We told him we would be tied to his hip every moment of every day when he's not coaching or recruiting, that there are things that we're going to want him to do. He didn't flinch. He understands what we need to do and he understands it's his job every day to promote and enhance Fresno State basketball." (link)
East Tennessee State FB HC Sanders was reinstated yesterday after a one-week stint on administrative leave. He received a letter of reprimand and will be docked one week's pay, roughly $4,300. ETSU AD Carter: "This university holds itself to an extraordinarily high standard. It is a privilege to work for, to play for and to be educated at East Tennessee State University. That standard of excellence was upheld this week. Randy Sanders was the best choice for our football coach in December. He’s the best coach today and I took great pleasure in talking to our football team to let them know he will be our coach into the future." Sanders: "Last week, I responded to a situation with poor judgment towards the end of practice. I immediately apologized to the player directly involved and to my team, and contacted my athletic director to explain everything that happened. Since that time, I have cooperated freely and fully with the university and its review of the situation. I accept the decision by the university and recognize that through my role I have an obligation to lead by example. ... I look forward to returning to the sideline." (link)
More Personnel: UT Arlington MBB HC Ogden gets a five-year deal, no additional details released yet. Mavs AD Baker: "We want to go to the NCAA. We talked about that with all our candidates that we want to play in March. It's about March. ... We're not hiding from that." (link); Georgia Tech FB HC Johnson extended through the 2022 season. (link); Siena MBB HC Patsos denies allegations that he verbally abused a team student manager, "I never taunted, harassed or abused this young man. We did know that he had OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder). He was adamant that he wanted to be treated the same as anyone else." (link); Looks like Merrimack will hire Providence AHC Borek for its Men's Hockey HC opening. (link); Former Wake Forest MBB HC Gaudio will leave his ESPN analyst gig to join Cards new HC Mack in Louisville as an AC. (link)
Alabama sent a fan experience survey last week for feedback at Bryant-Denny Stadium and will do the same next week for Coleman Coliseum. AD Byrne joined The Game With Ryan Fowler to further explain the survey and discuss potential improvements to both venues: "We need to understand what is important to our fan base, where their interests are." Byrne also covered what it is like working with Tide FB HC Saban: "He [Saban] has been incredible. The focus and the drive and all those things that we have all read and know about him certainly are true. I've come to really appreciate the way the guys on the team love playing for him." More. (link)
"The parties have resolved this matter to their mutual satisfaction." That statement, from Liberty officials, is all we're going to get on the settlement reached between the school and former Flames FB student-athletes Jackson, Carrington and James, each of whom were seeking $50M from the school and $50M from their accuser after being kicked off the team and expelled from LU following accusations of sexually assaulting a female at an off-campus party in August 2015. The trio alleged defamation and Title IX violations and the settlements came shortly after the plaintiffs' lawyer, Farmer, said he had new information that would "blow up this Liberty case." A key concern for the plaintiffs was whether the school acted more extreme than necessary, given the then-recent hirings of several former Baylor staff members who had been embattled in similar issues in Waco. Long read, lots of details. (link)
Idaho Prez Staben has tabbed Dean of Students Eckles with leading a task force to look more closely at student safety. Eckles: "It’s to look at a holistic approach to the students on campus, from mental health and wellness, their personal wellness and safety, as well as our approaches to interpersonal violence and what that looks like. We want to make sure we’re creating an environment where students can do their number one job, which is be students. If we’re going to change culture, if we’re going to create an environment, it’s incumbent upon all of us to engage in the efforts that we can collectively in order to create the environment together." The Student Safety and Wellness Task Force will have 15 members, 10 staff and five students. Eckles goal is to have the first meeting by the end of the school year and recommendations to Staben before 2019. (link)
Michigan Rep. LaSata and Rep. Kesto together spearheaded an investigation into Michigan State's oversight of convicted ex-school doctor Nassar and found "absolutely no doubt" that the school failed to adequately protect students and patients on its campus. LaSata: "Our inquiry confirmed this was an institutional failure with multiple lapses in policy, procedure and culture at Michigan State. That must change." Since 2014, at least 243 people told MSU of Nassar's abuse. More from the investigation's report: "We feel compelled to note MSU appears to defiantly and wrongfully maintain it did not mishandle this investigation." Several recommendations as a result of the report, as well. (link); Lots here on an Outside the Lines report of former Michigan State MBB student-assistant coach Walton, who was accused of sexual assault in 2010. MSU administrators now say they would "handle it differently" if such an allegation were made today, as Walton was allowed to continue working under MBB HC Izzo while facing a criminal charge for allegedly punching a female MSU student in January 2010 and accusations of sexually assaulting a different female student that April surfaced over that summer. (link)
As part of "I Will Week," Arizona's athletic department hosted a discussion Thursday night about law and rape culture. As part of the campaign, students were asked to sign the I Will Pledge, committing to help end the normalization of sexual violence in society. Former Assoc. Dir. of Arizona's C.A.T.S. Life Skills program Steptoe spoke on Thursday: "This is an issue that women can’t get rid of. It’s going to take men to step up and answer that call to end that culture. When are we going to say enough is enough and come to bat for women?" (link)
Also Noticed: Eastern Kentucky will eliminate the men's and women's tennis programs in an effort to cut 20% from the school's athletic budget. AD Lochmueller: "I deeply regret the actions taken today in cutting athletics by over $2 million and especially the discontinuation of our women’s and men’s tennis teams. Anytime a student-athlete suffers due to no cause of their own, it hurts — badly. I want to thank each of them for their contributions to Eastern Kentucky University both in the classroom and on the court." (link); (link); Straight from Indy: "San Francisco failed to monitor its golf program, allowing two former head coaches to engage in recruiting violations, according to a Division I Committee on Infractions panel. Additionally, the two former head coaches failed to promote an atmosphere of compliance." Public reprimand and censure for the school one year of probation starting yesterday, vacation of records, no recruiting in December and $5K fine. (link); For a $1.2M guarantee, Florida Atlantic adds a FB road game at Minnesota in 2020, rescheduling the FAU at Illinois game for 2023. (link)
