Lynn Bailey - Printmaker : Newsletter 20
Welcome to Newsletter 20

This time I would like to invite you to the Reading Contemporary Art Fair. The private view is Friday 20th April, plus I have complimentary tickets for one, two for one tickets for Saturday & Sunday 21st & 22nd April. I can email printable PDFs to you or post them to your address – just let me know ASAP.

I’m applying to take part in a variety of random exhibitions over the next couple of months. I will be posting info about these on social media as and when they come up. May is also going to be a busy month with preparations for my Open Studio event and activities at Double Elephant during Art Week Exeter. I shall send another Newsletter about that in a month or so.

Here’s a quick list of what’s in this newsletter:-

1.         Invite to Reading Contemporary Art Fair.
2.         Website news
3.         Double Elephant news and my courses at DE

This is my first time taking part in the Reading Contemporary Art Fair. It’s run by the same lovely people who run the one in Windsor that I have done 4 times now – so I know it will be quality and well run! They also run a Contemporary Art Fair in Surrey as well now – but I feel that is a bit too far for me to travel.

“Bringing together over 160 artists, printmakers, photographers, sculptors, ceramicists and selected galleries from the UK and Europe, we offer the very best in contemporary art.”  - Contemporary Art Fairs.

There are also workshops, live demonstrations and interactive art.
As always, I shall be taking a few printing plates with me to try and help people understand my processes. I’m always happy to talk to anyone curious about what I do.

Don’t forget to ask me to send you an invite for the PV or a two for one ticket. I cannot attach a PDF to a MailChimp newsletter, but I can email or post to you. Tickets would otherwise cost £7 each and you can’t get in for the PV without a ticket.

2. Website news

Despite my website being a bit dishevelled for a while (being fixed as I type this) my news page (otherwise known as a blog) has been recognised for a special mention. Feedspot has awarded my blog 4th out of the “Top 20 Printmakers Blogs”   Feels a bit random to me because I don’t think of myself as a blogger – but apparently that is what my news page is. Feedspot is an RSS feed reader. People into blogs and blogging might know what that means.

Apparently the printmakers blogs are ranked based on following criteria...
• Google reputation and Google search ranking
• Influence and popularity on Facebook, twitter and other social media sites
• Quality and consistency of posts.
• Feedspot’s editorial team and expert review
... so I shall take it as a compliment.

I don’t think I shall be putting myself under pressure by trying to live up to the accolade – I shall just continue to update my News Page (er Blog) in my usual erratic way.

3. Double Elephant news and my courses at DE

Heard of Exeter Mary? Or Mary the Pigeon?Mary the Pigeon
Take a look here to find out about a rather intriguing project at Double Elephant. As George Barron, Project Leader says: “It has been amazing to uncover what was the largely forgotten story of Mary’s wartime heroics. Charlie Brewer and his pigeons held an incredibly vital role in wartime communications”. This is just the start of a two year project – no doubt one I will be coming back to.

2018 is also Double Elephant’s 21st anniversary year. You will be hearing about some fundraising events taking place during Art Week Exeter in the next newsletter and there will be a party and exhibition in June. But right now, I really could do with any suggestions you might have regarding who I could approach to sponsor raffle prizes! If you have any ideas, please let me know.

If you are unfamiliar with Double Elephant Print Workshop this is what we aim to do:-
  • provide open access to fine art printmaking resources and equipment
  • to encourage and support people to discover their creativity
  • offer a range of courses in printmaking including outreach to schools and hard-to-reach community groups.
  • provide high quality exhibitions, print sales and an editioning service.
  • be committed to maintaining an enjoyable, accessible, environmentally healthy and solvent-free working environment.
While the Outreach presses have been flying around Wells, Beaford, the Axe Valley and Plymouth for workshops lately, courses are still doing well. Some fill up quickly, and others are much slower to fill in today’s economic climate. Take a look here to see if there is anything that interests you.

The next courses that I, personally shall be looking after are:-
  • Thursday classThursday 10 week full day course starting 26th April – spaces available
  • Collagraph Weekend 19 & 20th May – Fully booked! But IF we get more people on the waiting list I could look into scheduling another weekend!
  • Silk Aquatint Weekend 28 & 29th July – spaces available
Let me know if you have any questions about these or any other course at Double Elephant. And if you would like the portable presses to come to your school or art society contact outreach@doubleelephant.org.uk

Hope to see you soon

Thanks             Lynn
