BIG EAST boss Ackerman pods with Bloomberg's Soshnick & Novy Williams, "The Money Behind Villanova's NCAA Basketball Title." Ackerman says her league budgets without considering any post-season revenues since it's unknown down the road, believes the gap in spending between 'Power 5' & I-AAA departments will continue to grow due to TV deals. However, the balancer can be to stay focused on hoops & spend money smartly. Ackerman also points to having a constant eye on changes in the media landscape to make sure the conference is leveraging all opportunities, sees more disruption in that space over the next five to six years. In closing, "90% of life is showing up," as Ackerman notes it's easy to blow something off, but you never know when you might meet someone "that could mean something." (link)
SEC Commish Sankey reflects on his path to leading one of the most accomplished leagues in the nation for going on three years now, notes his early proving ground as commissioner of the Southland in his early 30s, "I was 31 or 32 years old and I was in a meeting room with (Big Ten Commissioner) Jim Delany and (former SEC Commissioner) Roy Kramer, (former Notre Dame athletic director and ACC Commissioner) Gene Corrigan, (former SEC Commissioner) Mike Slive and Steve Hatchell, who was at the Big 12 at the time. I got to know those folks, build relationships, understood the national perspective in conferences. Those are relationships that were built years ago in different settings that still have importance to me." Sankey says leading the SEC "is a full-time job, capital full-time," and adds, "There is so much going well in the SEC. I would say all of that combines to bring a lot of pride to be in this role and even just to be associated with it. But there are a lot of people who deserve credit for those achievements." The day he was named SEC boss in 2015, Sankey told his wife, Cathy, and said, "It worked. [...] Decisions to move, to take jobs, to not take jobs, to say no, to say yes. It worked to put me in this position. Again I’m grateful she shared the whole journey." More. (link)
Earlier in the week, Loyola Marymount SVP for Student Affairs Bove & LMU Prez Snyder penned a letter to the athletic department with updates on the Lions' AD search. Of note, Parker Executive Search will assist with the process, EVP & Chief Administrative Officer Scarboro will chair the campus committee created to lead the search & the new AD will report directly to Prez with a dotted line to Student Affairs. The search committee also includes Senior Assoc. AD Behm, Women's Volleyball student-athlete Castellanos, WBB HC Elliott, FAR Peters, VP for Human Resources Chandler & others. (link)
Outgoing Loyola Marymount AD Husak talked about his lengthy leadership tenure in Los Angeles, points to the biggest challenges of personnel, funding & earning the respect of others around campus. Husak says LMU had a chance to seize its hoops success of the late 80s/early 90s & could have been in a similar spot today as Gonzaga, but didn't ultimately take advantage of the moment. Wishing the Lions could have won more & noting how student-athletes who struggled & eventually succeeded were also on Husak's mind. (link)
Idaho may have to cut Women's Soccer, Men's Golf & Women's Swimming & Diving if the state education board doesn't grant an extension for the Vandals to figure out how to eliminate its department deficit. If leadership is granted additional time, Prez Staben plans to push for a change to how revenues are calculated, which currently doesn't include monies from student-athletes who aren't on full rides. To add to that revenue stream, Idaho is planning to add Men's Swimming, Women's Triathlon & Co-ed Rifle to its sport portfolio, all of which are partial scholarship programs. Staben: "What I'm proposing in those equivalency sports (that offer partial scholarships) where you can do this most readily is take a little different approach, and optimize revenue, do the best you can on the performance side, but decrease the actual dollar investment the university is making." (link)

Moving around the nation from one program to another is part of the game for many FB ACs trying to work their way up the ladder. The 2018 season will mark the first for Cal defensive backs coach Alexander to spend two years in the same spot since he started his coaching career in 2013. And, that was after playing for five teams in four years during his NFL career. Alexander's wife, Krystina, "I tell people I’m a professional mover. If I wanted to have my own company, I’d know exactly what to do, because certain companies may not have done things I like. […] Usually, I don’t unpack everything. I unpack what we need, but I don’t decorate, don’t put pictures up, because I did it twice and everything came down instantly. To make it easier for myself, I put up what I need." Renting or buying a house is commonly a big challenge, as is finding reliable babysitters. Lots more from The Athletic. (link)

Minnesota Duluth Men's Hockey HC Sandelin after the Bulldogs National Championship win last night, one year after falling in the title game, "But experience means a lot. And just because you've been there last year doesn't mean everything. But it certainly helps. And I think it's nice for those guys to be able to bounce things off the guys that haven't been here and just kind of get them focused on what it's like. And, again, I mean we tried to let them enjoy the experience. Let them enjoy the experience. We're not an overly structured team with meetings and different stuff. So they enjoyed each other. And I think it showed in practices. I think it showed in the game, how they cared about each other and they won for each other." (link); Notre Dame boss Jackson, "Well, you know, this group was unbelievable. I mean, they were relentless. They were resilient. We had great leadership. And I feel awful for our seniors. They did a heck of a job all season long. We still walked away with two trophies and played in the national championship game. So there's a lot to be said for what they accomplished this year. They had a 16-game winning streak. We had a great year in the Big Ten. And we ran into a better team tonight. So we have to respect that." (link)
The Star-Telegram's Engel explains why TCU Swimming & Diving Coach Busch "resigned" earlier this year, just six months after taking the job and two weeks after being place on administrative leave. Allegations include verbally berating staff members at the pool about practice times, fraternizing with students at local bars, physically confronting an assistant coach, and disappearing for long periods of time from the team hotel on road trips. "One TCU athletic department official said there was no instance of sexual misconduct; another department official said that issue is why the matter is currently under investigation by Title IX." The team members have long sought an explanation on Busch's departure, but administrators are mum on the situation, as the investigation is ongoing in the Title IX office. (link)
AZ Central's Moore says Arizona AD Heeke's biggest challenge at the moment is getting FB HC Sumlin & MBB HC Miller to be more transparent, "This isn’t about sexual harassment. This isn’t about federal bribery scandals. This isn’t about a track coach assaulting a former student-athlete. This is about how you handle things afterward. This is a call for stronger leadership and transparency so that Heeke can prove he’s shaping a program that properly represents the university and state as a place where people play by the rules and women – and men who seek to be allies – can study and work without fear of harassment." Moore points to Sumlin only being available to the media one time during Spring practice & Miller "has been a ghost" since his season ended. Heeke says the Wildcats have nothing to hide, but Moore pushes, "We need more information, and the onus is on the university, and Heeke, to provide it." More. (link)
Former Florida FB HC McElwain took a $400K loss in the sale of his Florida home and suffered some public digs on account of it. But the reason why the McElwains decided to eat the difference is now coming to light: "Because the family who made the offer has two disabled kids. Because the home's ramps, lift and wide hallways were perfect for a wheelchair. Because the converted garage would make a great first apartment for a 20-year-old with limited mobility." The McElwains real estate agent Wehbe takes it a step more: "Because the McElwains have a good heart. No one knows that. No one appreciates that." (link)
Minnesota's FB team will put 'It Ends Here' at the forefront of its spring game next weekend, wearing shirts with the slogan on them to the game, decals on their helmets and carrying 'It Ends Here' oars onto the field before the game starts. 'It Ends Here' is a student-led organization working to promote and enforce sexual assault policies on campus. All part of HC Fleck's efforts to help prevent sexual assault issues. To that end, well done, sir, on having your entire team write handwritten thank you notes to sexual assault awareness advocate Tracy, who tweeted Thursday about the impact of receiving 81 notes from @GopherFootball. From a ratings standpoint, ESPN's new Get Up! morning show with the highly-paid trio of Greenberg, Beadle & Rose hasn't exactly excited, but ESPN's new studios at the base of the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City are a sight to behold. Technically it's the ESPN Seaport District Studios & includes 21,000 square-feet with two primary studios, a podcast/simulcast studio & on "insert" studios. In addition to Get Up!, NBA Countdown also now calls the new digs home. Check out the slideshow via the link for more impressive interior & exterior photos of the new space. (link)
With budget stress at New Mexico, the Albuquerque Journal's Grammer takes a look at salaries for department leaders, "a closer look at the budget projections shows that only about $350,000 of this year’s overspending of $3.3 million was due to personnel costs." Current MBB HC Weir's $675K is considerably less than the $950K & $1.25M for predecessors Neal & Alford, respectively. "Overall, UNM athletics’ projected total personnel expenses of $14,531,524 for this year make up about 42 percent of its total expected $34,988,718 in expenses." Graphic at the bottom of the piece includes pay info for a number of senior administrators & notable coaches. (link)
The Athletic's Weinreb takes a closer look at realities of college FB's attendance decline. North Carolina sports management professor Popp: "I think it’s an old-school mentality, that if you come to a game you’re going to sit on the edge of your seat. But this is a six-hour commitment. And I don’t think we can ask them to make the game the only draw. People want a lot of other entertainment options. The mindset of the attendee is changing." There's also discussion around an enhanced TV experience & the reality that six- to twelve-day schedule windows don't allow fans enough time to plan in advance. Popp's peer Malekoff believes some serious surveying of fan bases is needed, "Don't just guess why fans don't come, ask." (link)
The Undefeated's Fletcher looks at the racial makeup of the most successful HBCU golf teams, such as Bethune Cookman, where the men's team has won four of the last five PGA Minority Collegiate Golf Championships and the women are six-time defending champions. The BC men's team has just two African-American players on a nine-man team, while the women's team has only one among its four members. Alabama State Men's Golf HC Grandison: "It is very difficult to recruit the level of talent you need to be competitive. There is talent in the black community, but not the training." Wendell Haskins, former head of diversity for the PGA and founder of Original Tee, a lifestyle brand dedicated to inclusion in golf: "You have to have access to elite golf to play elite golf. In basketball, let’s say you are a white player from the suburbs. You haven’t been battle-tested until you’ve gone into the inner city and played with some brothers. The same thing goes with golf in reverse. A lot of kids can play golf to an impressive level. But until you’ve played country club golf, under country club conditions, with country club kids, you have not played elite golf ... I think of HBCU golf coaches with white players the same way I think when I see brothers running up and down the court playing basketball for Duke or Kentucky. Black schools are trying to win, and nobody wants to recruit players who are not competitive. Those coaches no doubt are committed to helping black kids play golf, but they also want to keep their jobs." As Fletcher points to the bigger picture, there are only two golfers with African-American heritage on the PGA Tour - Harold Varner III and Tiger Woods. (link)
Missed this at the end of last month as ESPN's Rovell hypothesized on how sports venues may transition to havens for sports gambling if PASPA allows for the legalization of wagering. Rovell uses the Capital One Arena in D.C. as an example as it could show all sorts of additional sporting events on screens throughout the facility with bets taking place on mobile devices. It's actually not that big of a stretch as Monumental Sports' Leonsis has hinted at this exact scenario. Lots here. (link); Also, an interesting piece on the underground gambling marketplace around eSports. Billions are being waged. Billions. (link)
Also Noticed: A judge ruled Friday that Mark Hubbard - the man who lied to the University of Hawaii about his ability to get Stevie Wonder to play at a fundraiser concert - needs to serve nearly five years in prison. (link); Check out ESPN's NBA Draft Tracker (link); ESPN averaged 3.5M viewers for its two days of Masters coverage, up 46% from last year and its highest two-day average since 2013. (link); Snapchat will roll out group video chats similar to Messenger and Houseparty, where you and 15 friends can socialize with video or you and 31 others with voice chats. (link); Looks like Twitter will delay retiring Site Streams & User Streams beyond its original June 19th depreciation date. (link)
Correction: Yesterday we noted former Louisville MBB program assistant Williams, who had his one-year NCAA show-cause decision reverse, as an AC. Williams was never an assistant coach for the Cards.
