Shurangama Sutra Summer Retreat– 50th Anniversary
Led by Bhikshuni Heng Chih and Doug Powers with other guest lecturers

In 1968, Venerable Master Hsuan Hua hosted the first Shurangama Sutra Study and Meditation summer program in the West. This event became a catalyst for the beginning of a Western Sangha and Dharma community that has grown over the years to become Dharma Realm Buddhist Association. Now, 50 years later, we will investigate the Shurangama Sutra again with senior disciples of Master Hua, many of whom were at the first Shurangama Sutra retreat.

The Shurangama Sutra has guided Chan (Zen) practitioners throughout the millennia. In this text, the Buddha explains the essentials of meditation practice explaining how we create our reality through our projections and how to breakthrough our confusion to awakening.

This retreat is a unique opportunity to learn from teachers that have studied, translated, and practiced this text for 50 years in an immersive monastic environment.

Dates: June 22 to July 1, 2018

Spaces are limited. Please sign up early.

Guan Yin Retreats

Guan Shi Yin Bodhisattva (or simply “Guan Yin”) is considered an embodiment of Great Compassion. Her name literally means "She who Hears the Cries of the World." As a Bodhisattva dedicated to the welfare of all beings, she listens deeply to each of our sounds and responds accordingly. By reciting her name, we tap our own inherent capacity for kindness and compassion. By quieting our minds, we begin to hear our own inner sounds with a caring and open heart.

Berkeley Buddhist Monastery

Next Class: March 19, 2018

Led by Doug Powers (bio)

Topic: Two texts, one millennia old and the other just published (2017), offer perspectives on the present state of the modern mind and where we can go from here. Join us in a conversation with Maitreya Bodhisattva in The Universal Vehicle Discourse Literature and social theorist Franco “Bifo” Berardi in Futurability. Is there a way out of endless flight from one object of desire to another? What do other fields of possibility feel like and how do we access them in the present?

For maximum fun, please bring along a quick wit and a wicked sense of humor.
