April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month

Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month is a national awareness month that is celebrated by agencies all over the United States. During April, Rape Crisis Centers across Kentucky participate in awareness and education campaigns to highlight the importance and prevalence of this issue. In our Buffalo Trace region we have partnered with two important organizations, Maysville Community and Technical College and Maysville Young Professionals Network in order to have a wider reach in our community with these events. In Northern Kentucky, we have partnered with the Covington Branch of the Kenton County Library to host a display throughout the month of April dedicated to sexual assault awareness and prevention including facts, statistics, how to get involved in the movement, as well as a book and film list dedicated to raising awareness and taking part in bystander intervention.

Wear Teal Day
April 4th
Individuals wear teal colored clothing to show support to survivors and raise awareness.

Chalk the Walk
April 11th
We will hold Chalk the Walk in front of our outreach offices once again to spread messages of hope and healing to survivors of sexual assault while raising awareness and educating our community.

Green Dot Day
April 18th
We will be setting up a booth at Maysville Community and Technical College, passing out green dot merchandise to the college students and talking to them about how they can get involved in prevention.

Wear Denim Day
April 25th
We will wear denim to protest ALL sexual violence and to remind that no clothing item can cause or is an excuse for sexual assault.

Maysville, A Green Dot City

Through a partnership with Limestone Ministerial Association the idea to make Maysville a Green Dot City was born!  WCC began meeting with members of the community, County Judge Joe Pfeffer, Mayor Cartmell, and several others to gauge the interest and we were overwhelmed with the support that was given.  Maysville will be the first Green Dot City in the nation therefore the criteria has not been set.  Members of the community have volunteered to serve on a committee to set the criteria and assist in distributing information.  Two meetings have been held and the criteria has already began to be set.  We have held two community bystander trainings and others will follow.  Marketing will begin soon and the message will be carried through the community that “Violence is not ok in Maysville”. As we offer more bystander programs people will begin to learn how they can help in violence prevention efforts.  WCC continues to be amazed with the wonderful support of  this initiative by the Maysville Community and we are excited to see this dream become a reality.

Blue Jean Ball

On Saturday June 9, 2018 Women’s Crisis Center will hold our third annual Fleming County Blue Jean Ball at Three Silo’s Barn in Hillsboro, Kentucky. The event will have country elegance in a rustic manner, allowing our attendees to dress casual. Three Silo’s Barn is owned and operated by Andrew Mitchell and Amy Hinton who will also be catering the event. We are excited for the gourmet meal that will be served. Avery Glenn Crabtree Band will be our live entertainment again this year! Avery won best country-bluegrass and best male vocalist at the second Lexington Music Awards in 2017 so it should be a fun evening.

We are excited to announce that we will be incorporating line dancing into this year’s event. Karen Brown & Julie Clarke will lead us in line dancing, so wear your dancing shoes!  We will have other fun activities scheduled this year in lieu of the auction, so come prepared for some excitement!

Green Dot School Update

The Green Dot GCKY Team is currently implementing Green Dot at 7 area high schools including- August Independent, Bracken County, Ludlow, Newport, Notre Dame Academy, Simon Kenton, and Western Hills University High School. We’ve conducted 3 bystander trainings and plan to conduct at least 2 more before summer.  Additionally, at our newest school, Notre Dame Academy, we’ve delivered overview speeches to all 600 students!

In addition to our standard (and exciting) overview speeches and bystander trainings, there are some pretty cool happenings at some of our high schools. Ally has been working with the Drama Club at Bracken County in order to choreograph scenes for their production of Beauty and the Beast. Students at Simon Kenton also highlighted Green Dot at their spring play, Robin Hood, by encouraging audience members to play Green Dot BINGO during the show.  Green Dot was highlighted in a similar way at Notre Dame at a basketball game in February as well as at their talent show, where students and staff performed “Paint It Green” (musical parody of the Rolling Stones’ “Paint it Black”) for the entire student body.

We are currently in talks with students and staff at 3 new schools and hope to be implementing Green Dot in all of them before the fall semester begins!

Brighton Center Scholar House

Women’s Crisis Center and Brighton Center Scholar House (BCSH) have been partnering to provide services on site to BCSH residents. Women’s Crisis Center provides direct services and prevention services (Green Dot).  Multiple workshops have been offered including Mommy and Me cupcake decorating, Bullet Journaling, Chalk the Walk, Green Dot trainings, body positivity, and workshops around navigating the holidays. It has been a pleasure working with Scholar House and the residents and we look forward to continuing this partnership!

Lincoln Grant Scholar House

Women’s Crisis Center and Lincoln Grant Scholar House are starting to partner to offer services on site to residents. Women’s Crisis Center provides direct services (counseling and advocacy), groups, as well as a full Green Dot implementation. We had a successful game night to get to know Lincoln Grant residents and have exciting additional workshops scheduled including Parent and Child Art nights, Pampering nights, and Green Dot events.

VOSS, Voices of Strength and Survival

Women’s Crisis Center is excited to offer VOSS (Voices of Strength and Survival) for survivors of sexual assault and/or domestic violence and our community. VOSS is a storytelling event that features a survivor as a speaker, and then the floor is opened up to audience members to share their story, ask the speaker questions, or ask for support from other audience members. We also provide pamphlets and general information about domestic violence and sexual assault.
Women’s Crisis Center has hosted multiple successful VOSS events where it was inspiring to see members share their stories, connect with each other, and empower one another to overcome what they’ve been through and to take exciting new steps in their journeys. We look forward to offering this event to the community and providing a healing space for survivors to connect and share.
If you’re interested in hosting VOSS at your organization, please feel free to contact us at
Alexm@wccky.org, SammyS@wccky.org, or staceyw@wccky.org.

Women's Crisis Center is able to serve our clients and achieve our mission with the support of our community and partners. Women's Crisis Center has had a long standing relationship with Connective Computing Inc. Their constant support goes above and beyond. A very big thank you to Connective Computing for all they do daily for Women's Crisis Center.
