Today starts the one-week countdown to my book launch—I can't believe it (p.s. tell all your friends to pre-order it now, it makes a difference!).

It's also Equal Pay Day and clear that the gender wage gap is not going away any time soon. One factor: most women don't negotiate. I know the first time I negotiated my salary was eight years into my career and even then it was by accident! Over the years, I saw that many of the young women who worked for me were making the same mistakes I had. Because of this, I devote an entire chapter in the book to Negotiating with Strategy and Empathy.

The good news: It's never too late to negotiate. With rampant stories coming out about extreme pay inequality between costars and coworkers, CNBC's Farnoosh Torabi asked me how to ask for more—or just equal to a colleague—effectively and with dignity. Remember, it never hurts to ask. The worst someone can say is no.

Wish me luck on the last week before launch—it's been a wild ride :)

TIP / Told You're Too Nice? Ask Why It Matters

I sat down with Michelle Moskowitz for an interview with Covey Club, a fantastic content site started by former More magazine editor Lesley Jane Seymour. We talked about all things nice girl and what to do when your boss tells you you're too nice and it's going to hurt you. Here's the advice I shared: "Go back to your boss and ask specifically, 'In what way is being nice hurting me [or my progress]?” From his or her answer, you can figure out the best way to respond

My Startup Life

Skura Sponge founder Linda Sawyer discusses her transition from advertising CEO to entrepreneur with Digiday. When asked, What part of entrepreneurship has surprised you?, she said: "Everything eventually lands on your desk. You can get really distracted by all the details since you have to wear a million hats. It is important to be disciplined and focused on the big picture." Definitely.

On the heels of the launch of their new DC location, The Wing announced a West Coast and international expansion to include 6 new locations. Such wonderful news!
