Indigenous stories of cancer: Learnings from arts-based research (FREE Webcast)
Featuring Dr. Chad Hammond, Postdoctoral Fellow, School of Rehabilitation Sciences, University of Ottawa
April 18, 2018 – 12 Noon EST
Cancer is often seen as a death sentence in many Indigenous communities, and for understandable reasons: Indigenous peoples are often more likely to die from cancer than non-Indigenous peoples, they experience higher distress and unmet needs, and have poorer access to cancer treatment and palliative care programs. There are also too few opportunities for them to express their suffering as well as their courage and resilience while living with cancer. Dr. Hammond will discuss arts-based research methods like journaling, photovoice, and digital storytelling, that can offer creative media for Indigenous peoples to tell their stories and find support and recognition within their communities. Through artistic expression, we can learn what’s at stake for Indigenous peoples affected by cancer and the people around them, including their participation in spiritual and traditional practices, connection with family and community, and cultural safety within the healthcare system.
