A current female Michigan State student has filed a suit in U.S. District Court on allegations she was raped by three former Michigan State MBB student-athletes in 2015. No names were included in the filing. Outside the Lines got comments from the student on the condition of anonymity, "I don't want a girl who's a senior in high school right now, with her whole life ahead of her, to have to go through the same thing I did. [...] Everyone I was in classes with or working with was just all into sports, like 'bleed green.' I'm thinking to myself, 'If only you could look at them like I have to. If only you knew what it felt like.'" Per the lawsuit, "MSU has fostered a culture in which female victims are discouraged from reporting sexual assaults when those assaults are perpetrated by male athletes, thus protecting the university, the male athletics programs, and the male athletes at the expense of the female victims." Comprehensive piece from The Athletic's Jennings on the New Leadership Model built around Arizona State FB with the hire of HC Edwards. To start, Sun Devils AD Anderson, "We didn’t spend a lot of time concerned that folks would not understand or misinterpret. We were very confident that the folks who have operated professional sports operations in particular … would certainly understand what we were trying to do here." Creating efficiencies were a focal point of the effort as senior leaders developed a list of questions a HC & his staff commonly face, from mundane to critical, and proceeded to streamline many of the nuances of running a program (examples: Where would coaches’ wives be before the games? And after? Who would develop the calendar of recruits’ high school games? And who would decide which games would be attended?). Anderson on Edwards' comments last week about paring down his roster, "Just because you have a scholarship doesn’t mean you’re guaranteed for four years to have a uniform and go to practice and travel on the trips and do that. It happens all the time. It’s just that Herm has determined he has nothing to hide. We’re going to be very transparent in our messaging about consistent performance and accountability." Lots more, including a run down of key administrators supporting the program. (link)
One thing Texas AD Del Conte promises he'll remove from processes in Austin is red tape as he prepares to interview every member of his new department later this month to develop a comprehensive SWOT analysis. Del Conte: "My job is to train every one of our employees so that when Tom Herman or any other coach comes in and says, 'I need this,' they say, 'Yes sir.' As long as we’re in the rules and regulations, they have the freedom to do it." FB HC Herman says he had heard there were "a lot of hands in the cookie jar" at UT, but was impressed when Prez Fenves & then-AD Perrin were the only two leaders he engaged with when approached about the HC opening, "That kind of showed me that maybe this place has it figured out. They’ve done a lot of soul-searching and self-evaluating and they realize what needs to be done." (link)
The Daily Press' Teel asks, "Do conference hoops tournaments hinder NCAA preparation?" Of course, Virginia MBB's loss to 16-seed UMBC is at the core of the question & here are some of the numbers Teel runs: "...the ACC’s seven national champions in the last 25 seasons. Only two played in the conference tournament final. […] Fifteen times in last 25 seasons, a league tournament finalist had the ACC’s best NCAA tournament showing. That’s 60 percent and includes Duke winning the 2010 and 2001 national championships, and North Carolina advancing to the Final Four in 2016, 2008, 1998 and 1997. […] Among the last 25 national champions, 12 won their conference tournament and four were runners-up.[…] The final stat check: In the last 25 years, 58 of 100 Final Four teams played in their conference tournament championship game. Forty-three won their league title, while 15 finished second." (link)
At times controversial headliner Hruby inks for The Athletic for the first time, takes a deep look at the costs associated with securing a college athletics scholarship for the parents of prospective student-athletes. Within the piece is a nifty calculator that takes into account a handful of variables to determine how much a parent can spend on the pursuit to simply break even. Notable Michigan economics professor Fort on the math behind trying to secure a full ride, "As a piece of pure finance, it’s nonsense. Parents do this day in and day out, and they don’t stop to tally it up." More. (link)

Southeast Missouri State MBB will no longer face post-season or other sanctions as it's back on track academically. Last season, the Redhawks had to use four of their 20 weekly practice hours for academic pursuits as a result of previous four-year APR scores. Patterson's attorney Mars, "Whoever wrote that response for Ole Miss either wasn't paying attention last year or had a case of selective amnesia." More. (link)

Kentucky AD Barnhart is pleased with the progress of Olympic sports in Lexington. Volleyball won the SEC Championship and made an NCAA Elite Eight appearance, Rifle won the national title and Women's Track & Field claimed third at the NCAA Indoor T&F Championships. Barnhart reflects on the state of the programs when he arrived at UK in 2002: "When we came here, I would say that our resources did not match expectations as to what we wanted to have happen in all of our sports programs. If we’re going to do this, either we’re going to do it well or we’re not going to do it, we’re going to make an attempt to do it well or we’re not going to do it and we attempted to do it well. ... I don’t think we take it for granted, but I think we are trying to think about championships and how we put rings on fingers and how we make runs to national finals and those kinds of things, and the mentality of some of our teams have changed that." (link)
Hogs Illustrated columnist Henry visits with Arkansas AD Yurachek, getting the scoop on the future of the Hogs FB game in Little Rock, facilities master plan adjustments and more. Says a resolution on the future of playing in War Memorial Stadium will be announced by the early summer and that architects and others will provide a feasibility study for renovations to Bud Walton Arena and Barnhill Arena, mainly whether the later will need to be replaced entirely. Points to Baseball's Baum Stadium as needing "immediate" attention: "You need some of the bells and whistles to attract the top young men in the country with locker rooms and training facilities that are competitive." Says the biggest difference between his current role and previous stops at Akron, Coastal Carolina and Houston is that the Razorbacks are the only 'Power 5' program in a state with no professional teams: "You get out and meet people all over the state and you realize that it's really something special. The Razorbacks tie the entire state together. You see that passion and it's pretty cool. Calling the Hogs is just great." (link)
Eastern Illinois will cut 12-14 athletic scholarships for the fall semester as part of a 23-scholarship reduction over the next two years. Everyone currently on scholarship will retain their funds, as will those already offered scholarships. Panthers AD Michael: "We’re all aware of how important scholarship money is to recruit students. There’s a challenge there. We started to have those conversations, but specifically which ones and how many hasn’t been determined yet." Michael calls the financial status of the department "as thin as (it) can be at present time from a staffing perspective." The Panthers had a FY17 deficit of $757,864, primarily from Grant-in-Aid fee revenue deficiency and receiving less NCAA money than the year before. (link)
SportsDay's Baby pens the first in a series on finances on Texas-based college athletic programs, this one on the varying Football recruiting budgets across the state. North Texas ($175,499) on one end of the spectrum with Texas A&M on the other ($1.2M). Mean Green FB HC Littrell: "It's easy to save money in recruiting. Our budget's never going to have to be huge because of where we're at (Dallas-Ft. Worth area)." More Littrell: "Sometimes you can have all the little bells and whistles that looks really good and feels really good and all that but gets you nowhere. It has nothing to do with winning football games. At the end of the day, it's still about the relationships, taking care of your student-athletes and having the resources that you need to make sure you can be successful." Included is a full breakdown of the state's eight public FBS schools budgets. (link)

Duke Fuqua Business School Professor Clark explains for the Harvard Business Review "Why Email Is So Stressful, Even Though It's Not Actually That Time-Consuming." The average professional spends 4.1 hours per day responding to work messages, but Clark, in analyzing her own email intake over a two week period, found she spends 1.35 hours/day and drew three important lessons from her study: 1) Each "yes" leads to more work; 2) It's easier to say "no" when you realize how many people are asking; 3) Focus on the few emails that are actually high priority. "Even in the darkest days of email overwhelm, if you force yourself to put a 'star' on high priority messages, you can often successfully tackle that handful."
