Beginning with an April 5th demonstration, BMC has helped lead a series of street actions, press events and press statements designed to demand Justice for Saheed and to correct the narrative being spun by the NYPD. Along with Saheed’s family and Communities United for Police Reform (CPR), BMC is demanding:

• a release of all of the video footage of the incident
• the names and disciplinary records of the officers involved in Saheed's killing; and
• an explanation of why the SRG police unit - designed to respond to civil unrest and terrorist incidents - was deployed.

Considered one of the most prestigious social justice awards for NYC organizations, the Frederick Douglass Award recognizes BMC for creating an “intersectional organizing space that centers Black leadership” while “taking on the complex range of issues affecting the lives of New Yorkers.” BMC members Rae Gomes and Ogonnaya Newman will receive the award on BMC's behalf at North Star’s April 17 Gala.
