Scroll in April

This week The Scroll Ensemble is performing two wonderful programmes in the Thüringer Bachwochen. We are so grateful to be invited to a festival with such fantastic other names! Come along if you are you in the neighbourhood of Eisenach or Blankenhain.
Next week we are bringing a completely new programme where competition and inventiveness are the central actors. Bela Bartok said competitions are for horses, but we think the competition element can bring a new excitement, where the musicians vie with each other to improvise the most interesting story, use a theme in the most surprising way and interact with our audience now.

Bach's Workshop and Table Music

Table Music

Background music was just as loved in the past as it is now, when it came to having dinner. Thüringer Bachwochen asked us to accompany a menu from Bach's time and area: crazy thing is, one of our first programme proposals ever (12 years ago) was a delectable menu of German table music.
Today this recipe is finally going to be cooked, with improvisations on and even actual music by Telemann, Bach, Biber, Posch and others! We are especially looking forward to the improvisations to descriptions of the taste of the food by the audience.

Bach's Workshop of Invention

You probably know that we adore Bach and that he was an amazing improviser. We are presenting our favourite Bach-inspired improvisations in the first museum ever to be dedicated to him: the Bachhaus in Eisenach!
In Bach's birthplace we are improvising a suite on the Goldberg Variations Aria, an Invention on a theme from the audience, the chorale An Wasserflussen Babylon, a Concerto and the first ever trio sonata for Oboe da Caccia, Viola and B.C. based on music by Bach's Eisenach family!

Game of Themes at Orgelpark

Already in Greek times musicians competed: to get a job, to show off, or because an emperor thought it would be entertaining. Mozart competed with Clementi, Bach was challenged by Marchand (who eventually didn't show up), Scarlatti and Handel competed and many more did.

Like today's rap battles, improvisation and competition made classical music a scintillating experience.

Just like with sport's competitions, we want to give you more of a way into the musicians' improvisations, with playful 'sports comments', audience picking themes and choosing the winners!

So come and sit on the edge of your seat for classical music in the moment!
