Idaho AD Spear placed on a 60-day administrative leave stemming from how he & other Vandals leaders handled a 2013 report of sexual assault by a former Diving student-athlete against a FB student-athlete. Idaho Prez Staben: "This (leave) is to conduct an investigation and what we do going forward will depend upon the results of that investigation. […] Our intention is to evaluate every aspect of the serious issues brought to light to ensure we do not repeat them. […] One of the goals that I have for the process is that we demonstrate our extraordinary concern for students and also our willingness to be as open and transparent as we possibly can, and regain the trust of those who perhaps we have, to some extent, lost their trust over this issue." The university's Student Senate is set to meet tonight to vote on a measure that would ask for Spear to be dismissed, as well as a "comprehensive and anonymous" survey of female student-athletes from the last 10 years to asses the culture of the athletic department & a new student-led task force to examine safety & security. Check out Portland State's new $52M Viking Pavilion at the Peter Stott Center that's nearly ready for the public as MBB HC Perry comments, "For the investment to be made into our programs, to have something like this in the future and what we can recruit to, and what it means to our teams and our programs, it's a game changer." PSU AVP for Enrollment Management & Student Affairs Accetta notes the building's multifunction design to host a variety of events as the university's student body demographics are changing. Video & pictures here. (link)
Florida AD Stricklin is working on pretty major upgrades to the Gators facility portfolio, but he says the $130M in spending won't be frivolous, "We’re not going to have gold-plated toilets in any of these facilities. We’re not going to have waterfalls in the locker rooms. … You want to make sure you’re spending in a really smart way. One of the great benefits of being at a place like Florida is, you can do really nice, first-class facilities but you don’t have to be gimmicky about it in order to get attention." Stricklin notes it's perfectly fine for some departments to go bigger on sparkle, but doesn't believe UF is in a position where it has to go overboard on the "wow factor." Further, Stricklin doesn't believe athletic facility advancement is an "arms race," it's simply a byproduct of so many campuses growing in every capacity, "This is not anything new. Every campus wants to put its young people in the best position to succeed." (link)
One more notable facility clip as Oregon State is adding a new center-hung video board in Gill Coliseum that features four cool-looking inward curved LED video displays. There's also new LED lighting & LED scorer's tables coming to the venue in work that's actually already underway & will be complete by the 2018 Volleyball season. Beavers AD Barnes says the work is part of the longer term athletics facility enhancement plan & all about improving the student-athlete experience. (link, link)
More from Gonzaga AD Roth on the decision to stick in the West Coast Conference, "The reality is, the Mountain West contacted us and asked us to consider joining. We set the table early on by saying there were going to be some significant hurdles for us to overcome — never saying they were insurmountable. There were just things we needed to figure out." On reports of the WCC rearranging revenue-sharing for the Zags, "There was no change specific to Gonzaga, including the revenue distribution piece. All 10 have an equal opportunity to earn those and benefit. As for the scheduling, it’s an opportunity for schools to get more non-conference wins and that will help them and the conference." (link); The Deseret News' Harmon says we learned the Mountain West "is not interested in throwing out special deals like it did for Boise State." Harmon also believes the national TV exposure differences between the two leagues was a key part of the Zags' decision-making process. (link)
Washington State's student newspaper indicates athletics in Pullman have zapped university reserves by around 50% over the course of the last five years. Of note, "The athletics deficit of the past five years is nearly four times larger than the cumulative deficit of all WSU colleges and academic units combined, excluding the new Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine, according to data provided by the WSU Budget Office." However, new Cougars AD Chun believes the investments that have been made into his department in the past are one reason it's "in a great position." WSU VP for Marketing & Communications Weiler notes "every college president in America that has athletics is asking herself or himself that question (how athletics appropriately fits)." More. (link)

The latest major sports player to push further into China is Major League Baseball as it's inked a deal with Tencent to live stream games & highlights, along with other supporting exposure. The agreement will really get moving today as 'Super Baseball Week' begins by featuring five games in five days, highlighted by major stars such as Mike Trout, Giancarlo Stanton, Kris Bryant & others. There's also a traveling road show that will hit major Chinese cities & attracts 3.5M fans annually. (link)

MBB National Championship Ratings: A generally uncompetitive game between Villanova & Michigan led to a notable dip in viewership for Monday night's title tilt. 16M tuned in to watch the match-up, down from 23M last year when North Carolina-Gonzaga was on CBS & down from 17.8M the last time the title tip was on cable. Comparatively, the two CFP semis, both on cable, did 14.8 & 12.5 ratings versus Monday night's 10.3. The CFP National Championship recorded a 16.7. Overall, the NCAA Tourney averaged 9.684M viewers across all windows, down 11% year over year. (linklinklink); Notable sports media voice & ESPN expert Miller, "Maybe a midnight eastern start time will help. (Blowout or not, game has to be pushed back. Such a late game is bad for ratings — & sport.)" (link); Despite the ratings lag, national TV ad dollars around the event were up 5.4% to $948.2M. (link)
Latest SBJ: Endeavor's acquisition of NeuLion for $250M is a "case of shifting dynamics in the streaming space" per headliner Ourand, who also notes NeuLion thought it could get $750M back in 2016. However, many new entrants, losing the NHL & issues from the Mayweather-McGregor fight led to troubles. Ourand: "While Endeavor was developing its own OTT strategy, industry insiders saw the company building out its own proprietary digital service. But with NeuLion available and with compatible programming, the idea of bolting on that existing technology company to come to market this year with a powerful offering was too attractive to resist." (link); Background on Kentucky MBB's "Inside the Madness" 10-episode docuseries that was on Facebook Live. Both Cats HC Calipari & filmmaker Sciavicco are repped by CAA, thus the connection. Sciavicco: "Ten years ago, it was me pitching to the networks. Now it’s flipped. The networks come to us. … All-access really shows who you are as a coach, who your staff is, and how you run your program." (link); Opendorse gets profile treatment. Notable college partners: Nebraska (obviously), Clemson & the Big Ten Network. The company is not yet profitable, but has raised $6.2M in total funding. (link)
Eastern Michigan is moving forward with its sport & staffing cuts despite pushback from students & supporters. Part of the university's latest statement, "The University deeply regrets the pain caused by recent budget decisions. We understand how difficult this has been for the impacted student-athletes and employees, but the situation dictates that hard decisions must be made." There's also no movement to leave the MAC as part of the remedies requested by students. In the full response, "In each of the four impacted sports programs, expenses exceed revenues (even when including tuition, room, and board paid by student-athletes, as well as donations). We regret that some student-athletes and family members have been given contrary information from external parties via social media; such information is false." (link, link)
Arizona MBB HC Miller amends his contract to include a $1M penalty if his program is found to have committed any NCAA violations or if he is criminally charged related to his employment. Specifically, the $1M would come out of the longevity bonus connected to the donor-committed energy stock Andeavor Logistics LP, which acquired Western Refining Logistics back in October. Miller's vested interest in the company was worth $4.1M as of yesterday (the stock closed at $45 even). University SVP for Marketing & Communications Proudfoot: "With this contract addition, Coach Miller has demonstrated his commitment to a program that follows the rules and the university has made it clear that it expects no less." (link)
Over in Tempe, Arizona State FB boss Edwards is catching some heat for saying cuts are coming for some student-athletes within his program, potentially even for some on full rides. A potentially troublesome comment from Edwards, "I told some guys who continue to stay in the training room, you’ve got no tape. I can’t grade you if you’re not on tape. All of a sudden, guys got well. It’s amazing. Sometimes these players think with 85 scholarships, I’m good. You’re not good. You’ve earned a scholarship because of your ability to be a student-athlete. It’s a combination of both. When you don’t meet that standard, there’s consequences. Consequences are sometimes tough. If I don’t apply those consequences, then I’m not doing my job as head coach." (link); Here's the video. (link)
More Personnel: Arkansas AD Yurachek tabs former Vanderbilt Asst. AD for Communication Parkinson as the new Assoc. AD for Communications in Fayetteville. (link); Bowling Green AD Moosbrugger goes with highly-accomplished Ashland (DII) HC Fralick to take over his WBB program. (link); UIC AD Klassy hires Northwestern AC Pointer for his open WBB HC spot. (link); ECU hires Florida Gulf Coast MBB HC Dooley for his second stint of leading the Pirates. (link); Saint Peter's MBB HC Dunne takes the Marist job. (link); Rhode Island says reports of an offer to Rick Pitino are totally false. (link); Northern Colorado WBB HC Ethridge due $15K in bonuses. (link); Kansas State AD Taylor said to be working on another new deal for MBB HC Weber. (link); Louisville has a new permanent President in Kansas Provost Bendapudi, "I wish I could say there will never be scandal anywhere. The way that you avoid it is to set the tone. I'm a big believer: Culture is what you tolerate. I really believe it. People talk a good game, but what will you allow to happen under your watch?" Funk & Associates helped to place Bendapudi at KU just two years ago, also handled the U of L search. (link); Outgoing UNLV Prez Jessup has landed at Claremont Graduate University as its new Prez. (link); Weber State Prez Wight exits for the same post at Salisbury (DIII). (link)
New Richmond AD Hardt recalls being wowed by his visit to cross-town rival VCU's basketball practice facility early in his new role with the Spiders, noting the Rams $25M facility puts them on "an un-level playing field right now." There is a $15M basketball practice facility in the works on the U of R campus and continued renovations to the Robins Center, which continues to house more than just the basketball practice/playing surface. Hardt: "Student-athletes are who we're here for. You really have to be tuned into that mindset and think about, 'OK, what do we need to bring to bear here that's not only functionally what we need but also has some wow to it. What is it that's going to impress in a positive way a recruit and their family?'" Other items on Hardt's to-do list include "beefing up the athletic leadership program, which promotes not only leadership but accountability among Spiders athletes." (link)
The Washington WBB team was on a road trip to Washington State when Wazzu FB student-athlete Hilinski took his own life in January and Huskies student-athlete Moser says it "was a wake-up call for a lot of people." UW AD Cohen: "I didn’t sleep for a week just thinking about him. I’m a mother of two sons. Thinking about our student-athletes. Thinking about other students, knowing how big an issue mental health is on college campuses today. Athletes or not, it’s an epidemic. The numbers are staggering." Two weeks after Hilinski's death, Washington's athletic administration held an open discussion with all student-athletes to talk about mental health. More Cohen: "I think more than anything, I think what we all recognized was that awareness needs to continue. Awareness and creating cultures where kids can be vulnerable, coaches can be vulnerable and that we can all show our feelings and talk about things where we can feel safe, is the single-most important culture we can that we can create. I think what gets lost is because student-athletes entertain us and we have fun watching them is that they are students. Period. They have challenges like every other kid that’s 18-to-22. ... I think that we need to slow down and remember this is not about results. We are in the people development business in higher education. Our goal is to help kids develop all aspects of their life. ...It’s a massive deal and it’s not an athletic issue. This is a society issue for all kids that we’re raising right now and adults." Austin Peay's Board of Trustees approved facility naming designations during last month's meeting, which means the baseball field at Raymond C. Hand Park will now be known as the Joe and Cathi Maynard Baseball Field, just as the softball field at Cheryl Holt Field, which will get new permanent seating and a new press box, will be called the Joe and Cathi Maynard Softball Stadium thanks to the Maynard's contributions to the Govs. Additionally, the center court at the beach volleyball facility will be named Caffee Family Court thanks do a donation from '10 alum and former APSU FB student-athlete Trent Caffee. (link)
Ohio State officials are mum how former FB student-athlete Gonzalez is "using pictures and video from his playing days in advertising" for his Congressional campaign. If you're wondering why, given OSU's history of legal action against 'improper use' of their trademarks, Cleveland.com's Tobias explains: "A university advertising policy spells out that generally, using university trademarks for promotional purposes without a licensing agreement is prohibited under state and federal law. However, an Ohio State official said the school policy is designed to address commercial use, as opposed to political speech, which could arguably be protected by the First Amendment." Tobias points out the stark contrast in rules involving political campaigns in the state of Michigan, which "prohibit use of [University of Michigan] marks in connection with political campaigns to mitigate any misunderstanding that we are endorsing the candidate making the use." (link)
ESPN's Markazi goes in on Las Vegas as a hotbed for college hoops post-season action, despite the "cold shoulder" from the NCAA. Interestingly, hotel occupancy rates during the first weekend of the NCAA MBB Tourney have finished in the top two for the entire year in Vegas (98.8% & 98.5%). Las Vegas Events Prez Christenson: "If someday we get the NCAA's blessing to go ahead and do postseason events, we certainly aren't going to go after the first and second round because we're not going to top what we already have." Pac-12 Commish Scott walks through the backstory of how his league started to host its post-season tourney in Sin City, points to the Mountain West, WCC & WAC already doing so, which provided some comfort. Lots more, including another notable comment from Christenson, "Every other sports league has come around, and I'm confident the NCAA will too. I just don't understand why they keep fighting this." (link)
Also Noticed: Here is video of Alabama FB HC Saban's reaction to Lebron James' assertion that Bama's "Shop Talk" show infringes on James' "The Shop." "I don't have a reaction to it. I think Lebron James is a great player. There has been at least 20 barber shop type things I've seen on TV, I didn't know anybody owned that. I didn't even know he had one. I'm sorry that anybody could be offended by something that we were just having fun with. I enjoyed it and we're going to continue to do it." James responds "The lawyers will figure it out." (link, link); From Law360: "The Big Ten Network's ability to air several live sporting events through one remote control room, as opposed to having to set up shop with a broadcasting van outside of each event, infringes a patent a Swedish media company says it owns over that broadcasting process..." (link); A proposal before the Ohio State Board of Trustees would drop student ticket prices for MBB games next year to $9 for conference and non-conference games, which were priced at $13 and $12, respectively, this past season. (link); ESPN's Rovell: "Little Caesars says they gave away more than 1 million lunch combos yesterday in honor of UMBC’s win over Virginia (#16 over #1), an estimated cost of $4.3M, according to @Bill_Shea19. Brand received more than $28M in exposure, according to @ApexMGAnalytics." (link); Kentucky Baseball set a single-game attendance record of 4,800 yesterday when Louisville came to town. (link); Campbell student Barron is still enrolled in the school but no longer a member of the baseball team after his arrest late last month on counts of corruption of a minor. (link); Kansas State MBB student-athlete Wainright was arrested yesterday in Kansas City and charged with fleeing and eluding & obstruction, both felony charges. KSU AD Taylor: "We are aware of Amaad’s situation, and due to the seriousness of the charges he has been indefinitely suspended from our men’s basketball team per athletic department policy. We take matters such as these very seriously and will re-evaluate his status as we learn more information." (link)
Ashridge Business School faculty member Reynolds and London Business School's Senior Executive Programme Director Lewis reveal for the Harvard Business Review "The Two Traits of the Best Problem-Solving Teams" by answering the question of "how do you establish and maintain psychological safety with a cognitively diverse group?" Helpful to look at the quadrant chart, here, which reveals that "adaptability correlated very highly with high levels of both cognitive diversity and psychological safety. We called these organizations 'generative,' and labelled the worse-performing organizations oppositional (high diversity, low safety), uniform (low diversity, high safety), and defensive (low in both)." The "generative" quadrant contains behaviors associated with learning, experimenting and confidence, but not control and constraint. Conclusion: "We choose our behavior. We need to be more curious, inquiring, experimental and nurturing. We need to stop being hierarchical, directive, controlling, and conforming. ... How people choose to behave determines the quality of interaction and the emergent culture. Leaders need to consider not only how they will act, but as importantly, how they will not act." (link)
