Historic Funding Increases for Homeless Children and Youth
The recently enacted FY2018 omnibus legislation includes historic funding increases for programs serving homeless children and youth, including an increase of over 10% for the McKinney-Vento Act’s Education for Homeless Children and Youth program, and a 7% increase in funding for the Runaway and Homeless Youth Act program.

Gearing Up for Graduation
With only two months left in the school year, we are fast approaching graduation season. Each student who walks across the stage will be less at risk of experiencing homelessness as a young adult – more likely to have a job, earn better wages, be healthier, live longer, and vote. These facts underscore the urgency of the newly launched Education Leads Home campaign, and its clear goals for every stage of development, from early childhood through post-secondary.

For youth who experience homelessness, donning a cap and gown signifies overcoming tremendous barriers. In celebration of these students, and in recognition of the hard work of the many professionals who support them, we’ll be featuring profiles of graduates for the next ten weeks, including our amazing SHC Scholars and Young Leaders.

Meet Jonathan from Texas

Graduating High School: May 24

Future Plans: Attending West Texas University

In His Own Words: My education started with a lack of purpose, but has slowly become one of the most important things in my life. I have more motivation to graduate high school and college, because I know what life looks like without it. Since my revelation, college has been a top priority. My desire to further my education is something I think about every day. Getting a degree won’t just affect my life, but many others. I’ve realized that it isn’t about what you can get out of life, but what you can give back to others.

Three to five words Jonathan uses to describe the SHC scholarship award trip to Austin, TX in March: Amazing, heart-warming, closure, new experiences!
Working for the 2% Chance: A Guest Perspective
He had been in 5 different high schools in 2 years.  He missed his whole freshman year because of homeschooling that resulted in no credit.  His chance of graduating on time?  “About 2%,” someone said in a meeting.

What do we do when a McKinney-Vento student is causing problems on the bus? Do charter schools have to provide transportation to the school of origin – and what if they are not doing so? How do state laws on immunization fit with McKinney-Vento? In collaborating with outside entities to serve students, how do we protect against violating FERPA and McKinney-Vento? These are just a few of the questions we’ve answered recently in our freshly reformatted Q&A from Our Inbox page. We’ll be updating the page every week, so keep it bookmarked for handy reference!
