French polish is a method for applying shellac, which on a musical instrument is thought by many to yield the best tonal properties of any finish. It is thin, flexible and lustrous. it is also easy to repair. Traditionally the application process is tedious but my method markedly shortens the process. In my one on one guitar construction courses held in my shop we completely finish the instrument in as little as eight hours.
Once a year I offer my French polish masterclass. This year it is scheduled for June 5 and 6 at my shop in Parker, Colorado. In this class students learn about one of the most beautiful and least hazardous finishes used on musical instruments and high end furniture for centuries. In the two day class you will learn surface prep, pore filling, the French polish application method as well as techniques for rubbing the finish out to a high gloss or satin sheen. Class will be held for about 4-5 hours each day and students are welcome to bring an instrument to work on in the class. If interested contact me to participate in this year's class.
If you are not able to come to this year's class and you can't wait for the next class opportunity in 2019 then my Online French polish course is the next best option.

If you follow my instructions you will learn how to achieve results like those in the pictures. You will be surprised at how easy it can be. For those that are new to shellac as a finish, here is a Luthier Tips du Jour video I did years ago with more information about this wonderful product.
