April 2018                                                                                       Building update and more

New Library Building Update: We are happy to share that The Samuel L. Westerman Foundation generously donated $5,000 to the building project. We really do appreciate the support the various foundations have shown the library and our community.

Staff is still hard at work seeking additional funds through grants and organizations. Currently we are just at the $1.4 million mark needed for the project (total cost is now $3 million as material expenses have increased).

Since August 2016, the library has been actively seeking ways to raise the funds needed to provide the community with an improved library facility that will allow us to offer more to the residents. The results do show with donations from our local businesses, foundations, and some of our residents. However, we do need more funds.

Therefore, the Library Board has decided to ask the residents of Richland Township for a construction millage on the August 2018 election ballot. The proposed millage will be for 1 mil for a 10 year period providing an estimate $150,000 a year to pay for a construction bond over 10 years. This millage is only for 10 years; it will not be asked to be renewed as it is just for construction. This figures to $1.00 per tax evaluation of a homeowner's property; if your value is 40,000 you would pay $40 a year.
Plan your visit accordingly:  the library will be closed April 20, 2018 for staff to attend a training workshop.
Meeting on Monday, April 16, 3 :00 p.m. at the library. It's not too late to become a Friend! The Friends support the library through volunteering their time and helping with fundraising. Consider joining the Friends group and helping with the book sale in May and other library events. Dues are just $1.00 per year for one person or $4.00 for family membership.
Hop on in for our Drop-In Craft Day on April 18th, from 1:30 pm - 7 pm!  This FREE craft is for both adults and kids.   Stop on in anytime that day between 1:30 and 7 to make a flower craft (this one does involve painting).
Come check out our Makerspace Station located at the blue table in the Juvenile Section of the library!  This is a self help activity that changes every 2 weeks.  These activities make kids think, learn, and create all while having fun at the library.  This month's activities are:

March 26th - April 6th ..........Flying Peeps

April 9th - April 20th .........Helicopter

April 23rd - May 4th ........ Water Drops

Have some spare time and want to keep the kids occupied?  Come hang out at the library and try out some of the STEM kits.  These kits are available for use at the library anytime, just ask at the counter.  They make noise, light up, and are fun for the kids (adults too)!

Programming (reminder, you do not have to have a library card nor reside in our service area to participate in our activities, both computers and programming are open to everyone).

Drop in Craft: Thursday, April 18, 1:30 pm - 7 pm

It's MAP time--all year long! Though really, it is available all year round! As everyone begins to enjoy the beauty of living in Michigan, be sure to check out the Michigan Activity Pass at www.michiganactivitypass.info You can search by zip code to find events and locations that participate in MAP; then enter your information to get tickets or discounts on the events you are interested in. There is a variety of things to choose from: campgrounds, state parks, museums and more. Take a look; it might be nice to have a back up plan for a vacation rainy day.
We will begin taking donations of good/clean books, DVD's, and CD's starting March 15th - May 15th.  Please bring donations in during the hours that the library is open (items left on the sidewalk will NOT be accepted due to the weather and bugs that like to crawl into bags).  We ask that any of the donations be brought in a box or bag that you do not want back.  We are having a shortage of our good boxes that stack easily in our storage room.  Thank you!
