Dalat International School News - Penang, Malaysia
6 April, 2018

Before the mid semester break we began to look at small steps we can take to lessen the power social media companies have over our time and attention. Did any of you try to “go grey” with your phone or device over the break? A few parents did email me after the last article about turning the phone screen to greyscale to say that they were surprised at how it was changing some of the behavior and interaction with their phones.

Here are a few more ways that you can begin to wrestle back control from your phones:
  • Turn off all notifications except for ones that come directly from people. A number of the notifications on your phone are actually sent to you by a computer (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc.). Go to your settings and to notifications and turn them off and leave on only those that notify you if a person is trying to connect with you (WhatsApp, Messenger, etc.)
  • Change your home screen to only include tools and not social media. Simply putting the social media apps vying for your attention on the next screen means that a quick glance to your phone does not have the same pull. Remember they are designing it to pull you in from a simple look or glance.
  • Charge your phone outside of your bedroom. This might mean getting an alarm clock but putting your phone in another room to charge will prevent you from spending time on your phone first thing in the morning. It also helps stop you from ending your day on your phone as well.
The social media companies are using psychology and millions of dollars in design strategies to pull you to your phone more and more and to consume more of your time and attention. Until we start taking steps to nullify them, they will continue to take away more and more of our lives. Once we start wrestling back some control, then we can model that for our kids and help them do the same.

Have a great weekend,

Campaign Tree in the Library
도서관 내 캠페인 나무
校方为感谢历年捐款者而在图书馆内进行壁画 - 树
A tree has grown in the library nourished by the love and generosity of the community!

After the conclusion of the capital campaign, a local artist, Tan Kai Sheuan, was commissioned to paint a mural in the library recognizing all the campaign donors from the last three years who gave RM1,000 or more to make the school better for our children. The goal was to include the names of our donors in a unique way. The result is a beautiful and unique addition to the library.

The mural was painted in March and is ready for all to see. Please stop by the library and take a look. Thank you to all who gave to improve education for Dalat students and continue Dalat’s legacy.

Bomba Day for Cub Scouts
컵스카우트의 "폭탄의 날"
童子军的消防日 – 4月12日
BOMBA DAY! BOMBA DAY!

Please don’t be alarmed when you see the Bomba Truck arrive on campus on Thursday, 12 April. Cub Scout Pack 222 will have its annual visit by our local bomba station. The bomba truck will be parked between the ES playground and the CASTLE from 4 to 5 p.m. The Cub Scouts enjoy the opportunity to climb the bomba truck and get to practice using the fire hose, and we invite the Dalat community to join in the excitement.
We would ask that parents of younger children help by being present. We always seek to be safe in whatever we do in scouting. Be prepared and bring a towel in case you get wet!

MS Grade Eight Transition Retreat
중학교 8학년  트랜지션 수련회
初中部八年级升上高中的灵修生活营 – 4月11日至13日

On 11–13 April, eighth graders will visit Nomad Adventures in Gopeng for a Transition Retreat.

They will depart campus Wednesday morning at 7:30 a.m. and return Friday evening around 5 p.m. This will be a time to build unity as a class and conquer fears of height and darkness and learn safety techniques in rapid waters while encouraging one another.

Piano Fund
피아노 기금 마련
筹募钢琴基金

Help us put a beautiful Yamaha GC1 piano in the new auditorium! The Lord has blessed us with an incredible price for this instrument, and with it we can bless countless students and the greater community who will be able to practice and perform with it in our new building. We still need more people to buy a key for RM400 in order to cover the cost of the instrument along with its first servicing. You can even charge it to your students’ accounts! Please email Joyce Goh (jgoh@dalat.org), Chris Ramos (cramos@dalat.org), or Andy Kearney (akearney@dalat.org) with your desire to donate, or speak with any one of them in person.

Reading Fair
독서 박람회
阅读博览会 – 4月17日晚上7点

On 17 April at 7 p.m., the elementary (grades 1–4) will host its annual Reading Fair in the chapel. The purpose of the fair is to provide an opportunity for students to share their favorite Battle of the Books book through a storyboard display; to enhance and encourage reading at all levels; and to allow the school, students, and families to work together collaboratively to promote reading. The Reading Fair is one of the highlights of our literacy program. Families are welcome to join in on the celebration.

Elementary Sneak Peek
초등학생 다음 학기 살펴보기
小学部学生優先預覽新学年班级 - 4月19日早上10点15分

On 19 April at 10:15, elementary students will have the opportunity to experience what it will be like to be in the next grade by visiting those classrooms for a sneak peek. The purpose of this event is to allow students to meet their prospective teachers, ask any questions that they might have, and learn more about the expectations of the next school year.

Impact Trips Update

A pillar of Dalat School’s newly minted strategic plan is authentic transformation. Specifically, the goal is to, as a school, create engaging opportunities for students to experience God’s love and deepen their understanding of Him. The program leading the development of authentic transformation opportunities at Dalat is the new service learning program – Impact.

This mid-semester break, the first two Impact teams joined with Impact partners in Indonesia and Thailand to serve and learn. In terms of service project success, cross-cultural learning opportunities, transformation in student’s hearts and minds, and assistance to Impact partners doing long-term work in these countries, these first trips were fantastically successful.

Thank you for your prayers and support as these teams served this break.
