Greetings Scions!

I hope this (belated) spring weather finds you all well, and that wherever you are you are enjoying the company of family and friends.

We have exciting plans in the works for our fine group! The Board has been finishing projects, starting new ones and as always are looking to the future. Let’s all work together to spread the word about the Scions. We must strive to get the next generation on board, and to teach them about the accomplishments of our fathers and grandfathers in the 17th.

Do you have any ideas for how we can fulfill our missions of honoring the service of our 17th veterans, and educating others as to their sacrifice? Let me know! I’d love to hear from you. Send me an email at

Your faithful president,
Adam

Remembering Dead Man's Ridge:
The 2018 Dead Man's Ridge Walk

By Chris Good

“I voted last week. Please tell your father I said ‘Thank You’,” said the Dutch woman to two sons of a 17th Airborne veteran. This sentiment was repeated dozens of times during a recent two-week visit to Europe, arranged by the Scions of the 17th Airborne Division.
The allies who liberated Europe in 1945 are remembered and revered by the children and grandchildren of those terrorized by Nazi occupation. Re-enactors from an organization called the 101st Airborne Division Belgian Friendly conduct the Dead Man’s Ridge Walk each year to commemorate the heroism of the men of the 17th Airborne Division. This was the apex of the visit by Edward Good and Richard Seifert, the two American veterans honored this year. Good brought along two of his sons, Tom and Christopher, and Seifert was accompanied by his wife, Lola.

The trip was a whirlwind of honors, photographs and autographs. The first week was spent in and around Bastogne, Belgium, where Seifert fought. Good arrived in France in February 1945 and both men participated in Operation Varsity in March. The veterans’ photographs now hang on a wall of a tavern called Au Carre in downtown Bastogne, along with those of other veterans who had visited before.

At the 2018 Dead Man’s Ridge Walk, scores of re-enactors from all over western Europe retraced the steps of the 17th Airborne. Their vintage or replica uniforms couldn’t keep them warm against the below-freezing winds. Even so, it was not nearly as cold as the deadly winter of 1945. Good and Seifert spent that day signing autographs and hearing stories about the occupation and liberation. One re-enactor described his father’s forced labor in a coal mine; another’s forebear witnessed a Nazi soldier kill a civilian for a potato. The allies were a welcome sight in 1945, and the veterans are still thanked today.

Good and Seifert spoke to schoolchildren, accepted medals from local elected officials, and visited American cemeteries full of fallen heroes. The second half of the visit was in Wesel, Germany, the site of Operation Varsity. There the men remembered that battle, and the subsequent period leading to the Nazi surrender. They were honored at the Town Hall of Hamminkeln, Germany, with a new 17th Airborne Division Memorial Plaque. Their final ceremony was at Duden Haus, the inn where they stayed in Wesel, where a new bench now honors the 17th Airborne Division.

The Never-Ending Be Merciful Story

by Andrea Kormann Lowe

For all the times my father, Col. John Kormann told the Be Merciful story, he never would have imagined that it would become such an important bridge to reach out to younger generations of many nationalities. At the 2017 dedication of the Be Merciful plaque, German high school students told us what the story meant to them, which was especially touching as almost none of them had discussed World War II with their families growing up.  At lunch afterwards, elderly Germans told their childhood memories of Operation Varsity to the visiting Scions, and to the teenagers of their town. It was the first time many of them had told their stories in public.

The goodwill from that visit and ongoing work of Jos Bex, plus the efforts of LTC Tim Stoy and Captain Monika Stoy (U.S. Army, retired ) with the Mayor and others, meant that in 2018 we achieved what seemed impossible in two months.  When we learned in January 2018 that veterans Edward Good and Richard Seifert were coming to Hamminkeln, that was the catalyst needed. With impressive military efficiency, the Stoys convinced the Mayor to agree to a plaque to the 17th Airborne Division on the Hamminkeln town hall wall and host a ceremony attended by 70. The Stoys commissioned a stunning plaque and arranged for a Color Guard to come from Wiesbaden (almost a 6 hour round trip) and the Vice Consul to come from Dusseldorf (an hour away).

The previous day, to an assembly of over 200 students and local press, the Stoys delivered (in German) an American perspective on the causes of the World War II. A “Missing in Action” ceremony, where an empty table set for one reminds us of all those soldiers who have not yet returned, was a moving beginning at both the school and at the plaque dedication ceremony.

We also met with the bi-lingual class that veteran Charles Davis and several Scions had visited in 2017.  We were impressed by the numerous display boards they had made of our visit, and also the research they had done on World War II and in the local area where Stumbling Stones now mark the location of homes of Jews who were taken away. Their first question to me was, “How is Charles Davis?”

March 24, 2018 dawned much as Richard Seifert and Edward Good told me it did for Operation Varsity; sunny and clear.  The joy of the dedication ceremony of the beautiful bench the Scions have provided in Hotel Haus Duden mingled with the sadness of the reading by Belgian guide Gregory DeCock of the names of the veterans who are no longer with us.

But for me, the most poignant part of the trip was unscripted. Just before the ceremony, a 50-year old German came to us by the bench and introduced himself as the Executive Chef of the Hotel Haus Duden where we had been staying. He turned to our veterans Edward Good and Richard Seifert and thanked them for enabling him to grow up as a free man. He then explained that he was a German paratrooper, who had seen action in Kosovo and Afghanistan. All 3 paratroopers compared notes about aircraft and jumps. He said that by law, German military cannot have these sorts of reunions, and how fortunate we are to be able to get together and honor our comrades.

Every year since 2015 I have traveled from London (where I live) to Hamminkeln, Germany and each year more amazing things happen, which I look forward to sharing with you in person in Germany in March 2020 for the 75th anniversary of Operation Varsity.

SAVING OUR HISTORY #9

By Scion David Shortt

Greetings, SCIONS!

This months article will focus on HARRY B. WHEELER, B Battery, 464th Parachute Field Artillery Battalion. Thanks to SCION Secretary, ED SIERGIEJ, who tipped off the Museum that HARRY'S personal effects were in the hands of a antique dealer in the western US. After much negotiating and posturing, the Museum was able to rescue hundreds of pieces of HARRY's effects, where they will be placed on permanent display to the public, and used to foster the education and memorializing of HARRY and his comrades of the gallant 17th Airborne Division.

HARRY was born in 1917, and entered the US Army from Grand Rapids Michigan in 1943. He was married to his wife THELMA, and worked as a Meter Reader for the local gas company. Joining the Paratroops, HARRY ended up as a 75mm Pack Howitzer Gunner in various Parachute Field Artillery units at Camp Mackall and Ft. Bragg, NC. Ultimately, he was assigned to B/464 and arrived in Eastern France in late February, 1945, just in time to be attached to the 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment (PIR) Combat Team, for Operation "Varsity". HARRY and his comrades jumped behind the 507th PIR on DZ "W" near Fluren, Germany, south-west of the Diersfordter Wald, and encountered very heavy fire from German Flak Batteries.

HARRY's main parachute canopy was shot up, forcing him to activate his reserve parachute. After a successful landing, he like hundreds of other Parachute and Glider Artillery members of the 17th fought as Infantry, until able to retrieve and assemble their Pack Howitzer components, and provide indirect fire support to the 17th. Later that day, he was able to retrieve the reserve parachute canopy that saved his life, and sent it home as the ultimate souvenir. HARRY, the brave Parachute Artilleryman would be 101 years old if still alive.

For many years, Trooper Bill Tom (194/C) was a major contributor to the original hard copy newsletter of the 17th Airborne Division Association, "Thunder From Heaven." After the dissolution of the Association in 2007, Bill began an email version of the newsletter, and continued that publication, "Thunder Mail Call" until the formation of the Scions Organization in 2011. With Bill's help, we integrated his newsletter into this publication. Bill and his wife Linda live in California and follow our efforts to honor the men of the 17th.

FOREVER IS NOT FOR EVERYONE
by Betsy Durkin Matthes
Daughter of Lt. Col. Edwin Ostberg (507HQ1 & 325th GIR)

My father was LT. Col Edwin Joseph Ostberg who served as both the Commander of the 1st Battalion of the 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne, and later assigned by General Gavin to be the Commander of the 2nd Battalion of the 325th Glider Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne.

Since the December 2015  publication of my book FOREVER IS NOT FOR EVERYONE, I have donated all profits from its sales to both the 507th and the 325th Associations. Since they have both recently disbanded, all the proceeds of the book are being donated to the Museum Of Aviation Foundation in Warner Robins, GA. to assist with the upkeep of the museum's 507th exhibition
and to the Scions of the 17th Airborne Division.

Since most of the paratroopers from the 507th P.I.R. went on after D-Day to serve with the 17th Airborne Division, I think your members would be interested to read my book. Paratroopers and friends from the 507th including, Paul F. Smith, Roy Creek, Frank Naughton, Roland Daniel, Rufus Broadaway, Earl Geoffrion, Robert Vannatter, and Glen Lapine are mentioned prominently in my book.

It is available on amazon.com in both a printed and digital version. Should any member of the 17th Airborne Division wish an autographed copy, they can obtain one through its website: http://www.foreverisnotforeveryone.com.

IN MEMORY OF THE FALLEN SOLDIER
by Isaac Epps

   The ones who went
   Were truly sent
   To do a Noble Deed;
   When evil showed
   They took the load
   In Justice, they believed.
   They heard the call
   And gave their All
   And some did not not come back.
   They knew the chance

   But took the stance
   When Liberty was attacked.
   It Speaks of Duty, Faith; and Love;
   It speaks of a respect
   for Country; For Others,
   For the Right of Man;
   To forget would be neglect.
   On this Their Day

   We stop to pray
   Their Memory shall live;
   The sacrifice they made was Life.
   What more can someone Give?
