Taking the next logical step in control of content, Netflix is reportedly one of several bidders eyeing Luc Besson's movie studio, EuropaCorp, which is behind action franchises Taken and The Transporter. Still fighting for its planned acquisition of 21st Century Fox, Disney has offered to buy Sky News to help Fox's acquisition of Sky pass regulatory scrutiny. The offer reportedly stands regardless of the Disney deal to buy Fox going through. Statetside, Viacom has rejected an initial below-market-value offer from CBS as the pair continue to discuss recombining into a single entity.
Fresh from agreeing a content sharing deal with BT in the UK, Sky's Italian operation has partnered with long-time pay TV rival Mediaset for content rights, channel sharing and a deal to access the DTT pay TV market. In a separate Italian agreement, Sky has inked a deal with Open Fiber to launch a fibre-only service from next summer.
The Greek pay TV market is set to get even more competitive with the news that local Wind Hellas is planning to launch a TV service, joining the three other operators already active in the challenging market. Meanwhile, the big content owners continue to by-pass traditional pay TV apace, with Disney-owned ESPN set to launch its direct-to-consumer (D2C) service, ESPN+, on April 12th, marking Disney's first D2C launch in the US, and Fox launching its own D2C service, Fox+, in Brazil.
Twitter has renewed its live streaming deal with Major League Baseball and the BBC's commercial arm has re-positioned for the future, pushing its premium content production to the fore with the official launch of BBC Studios.
