The IEA Photovoltaic Power Systems Programme (PVPS) is one of the collaborative R&D Agreements established within the IEA and, since its establishment in 1993, the PVPS participants have been conducting a variety of joint projects in the application of photovoltaic conversion of solar energy into electricity. |

What's New with IEA PVPS?
Early 2018 IEA PVPS started with a new five-year term that focuses on the challenges of PV's integration into the energy system. The international research activities will cover a variety of existing and new research subjects. With a growing market and more countries developing PV in 2018 than ever, the need for global, unbiased, professional and high quality research remains essential. With its 32 members from all continents, IEA PVPS is an international team of experts and researchers with the goal to improve the knowledge of Solar PV energy and to contribute to its large scale and sustainable deployment.
This 42nd edition of the IEA PVPS PV Power Update Newsletter highlights one upcoming report from Task 9, published reports from Task 13 and Task 15, the Snapshot 2018 by Task 1 and the Annual Report 2017.

IEA PVPS Welcomes Morocco
Morocco has officially joined the IEA PVPS technology cooperation programme in March this year.
|
|
|
|
Morocco is the second African country to join the programme, and the 27th country member. After Chile and South Africa last year, the IEA PVPS is becoming more and more global, with close to 90% of the PV market and industry represented. It expresses again the diversity of cultures and approaches to renewable energy development, that makes the strength of the IEA PVPS programme for several decades now. It also highlights the shift of PV towards new countries, on all continents, now that the competitiveness of many PV solutions is granted. The entire IEA PVPS family welcomes Morocco and looks forward to a long and fruitful collaboration.

In April, the Executive Committee Members of IEA PVPS met in Sarawak, Malaysia
PV and solar heating and cooling specialists met together in Sarawak to exchange and align research programmes. With PV becoming more and more competitive for producing electricity in buildings, the traditional understanding of how to produce heat and cold is being revised.

IEA PVPS Task 1
During this year, Task 1, with its focus on markets and policies, is planning several conferences in key locations. PV and utilities will be at the core of the activities, together with the diversification of business models and the PV market development. The latest TRENDS in PV Application report and the first numbers for 2017 are available together with the 6th edition of the SNAPSHOT of PV Markets.
The next Task 1 meeting is foreseen in September 2018.
IEA PVPS Task 9
Task 9 works on deploying PV services for regional development. A study on “PV Development for Residential Prosumers” is going to be published soon. It analyses net-metering and auto consumption regulatory and financial schemes applying for urban residential, administrative and commercial “prosumers” in eight different countries in the Global South.
IEA PVPS Task 12
Task 12 aims to increase international collaboration in the areas of safety and sustainability which are significant for PV. In accordance with the main issue of Task 12, a Task 12 Workshop took place as a session of IEA-PVPS Workshops at WCPEC-7 2018. The session mainly focused on recycling of crystalline silicon PV and audience members were informed for a roadmap for the future research on PV module recycling technologies.
The next Task 12 expert group meeting is planned for November 2018 in Sydney (Australia).
IEA PVPS Task 13
During the 50th Executive Committee Meeting 2017 held in Melbourne (Australia) the ExCo delegates approved the Workplan of the Task 13 extension for the period 2018-2021. In June 2018, an intermediate meeting in Hawaii (USA) and an intermediate meeting in Munich (Germany), were held to update the activities and focus on the new work programme for 2018-2021.

IEA PVPS Task 14
Task 14 works on preparing the technical base for "Solar PV as major supply in a 100% Renewable Energy Sources based electric power system" developing solutions and reducing technical barriers to enable PV.
The next Task 14 meeting will be held in October 2018 in Stockholm, Sweden. A conference session is planned to be organized about integration of Solar PV and Wind together with IEA-WIND Annex 25 at the Solar and Wind Integration Workshop on 16-19 October 2018.
IEA PVPS Task 15
Within Task 15 a number of activities have been undertaken in the past months. Throughout a selection of participation countries, BIPV modules have been distributed and implemented in a BIPV façade construction element. These BIPV solutions will be monitored and will provide guidance for international standardization of BIPV monitoring as well as insight in the different influence of local climatic circumstances on BIPV performance and degradation.
Task 16 started in July 2017 with 54 partners from 22 countries from all continents. The members are working on benchmarks of All-sky imagers and on methods to calculate regional PV forecasts - both haven't been compared up to now independently.
A workshop for Task 16 was organized in Munich, Germany to discuss requirements and value of solar prediction services to grid management operations.
The next Task 16 meeting will be held in September 2018 in Rapperswil SG, Switzerland.
Task 17 starts in 2018 and will go on for three years. The task focuses on possible contributions of photovoltaic technologies to transport, as well as the expected market potential of photovoltaic applications in transport. Its main goal is to deploy PV usage in transport, which will contribute to reducing CO2 emissions of the sector and enhancing PV market expansion.
