DENIM DAY: WEAR JEANS WITH A PURPOSE
Wednesday, April 24 | 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. | Sabbatini Lounge
Denim Day is an international protest responding to the Italian Supreme Court’s overruling of a rape conviction in 1999. An Italian woman was raped, and when the case went to trial, the jury found the assailant guilty. The Supreme Court later overturned the ruling, saying that jeans are too difficult to remove and the assailant could not have done so without the victim’s help. To honor denim day, people are encouraged to wear jeans to start discussions about the misconceptions that surround sexual assault.

CBU in the News

An April 3, Memphis Business Journal article entitled "Plan to turn Jubilee schools into charters moves forward" dealt with New Day Schools Inc. and its Compass Community Schools plan to replace the closing Diocesan schools and quoted President John Smarrelli in his role as president of New Day’s board of directors. New Day Schools and Dr. Smarrelli were also mentioned in an April 4 Chalkbeat article on charter school applications entitled "See who wants to open a charter school in Memphis in 2019."
Dr. Smarrelli was also quoted in an April 4 report on WKNO-FM regarding the ringing of bells by universities, churches, and other institutions to mark the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. "When you see the magnitude of schools getting together and this is what we believe in. We believe in equality. We believe in solidarity. We believe in the values of Dr. King," Smarrelli said.
