PSA: Don't Update Adobe Flash Player

Well, at least without really being careful about it.

As I've written about before, Adobe Flash Player is often used as a way for malware to get into your computer. Not that Adobe Flash Player itself is the culprit, but because it gets updated so often we will click the update button without giving it a second thought. And what is offered to install is often not Adobe Flash Player but something nefarious masquerading as Flash.

In the past I would get contacted by customers about this perhaps once a month or so, but in the past weeks or so this has picked up to a pace of almost daily. So some scammers out there are really pushing this method of spreading malware.

So what can you do? There are three ways you can handle this:

  1. Ignore the updates. Any time something says you need to update Flash just close the window and go about your business.
  2. Be extremely careful with updating Flash. I wrote instructions about that.
  3. Dump Flash. It's a technology that is fast on its way out anyway. I wrote a blog post about that a few days ago.
