Changes afoot as the DI Council releases rule changes. Of note, 1) For student-athletes in sports other than football and basketball, official visits now can begin Sept. 1 of a prospect’s junior year in high school instead of the first day of classes for senior year; 2) Athletics departments can’t participate in a recruit’s unofficial visit until Sept. 1 of the recruit’s junior year in high school, and recruiting conversations during a school’s camp or clinic can’t happen before Sept. 1 of the junior year; 3) The Council eliminated restrictions on the sale of alcohol at Division I championships; 4) The Council tabled a proposal that would allow football student-athletes to participate in up to four games per year without using a season of competition; 5) Council members adjusted the effective date of the notification-of-transfer proposal to Oct. 15, 2018; and, 6) The Council also modified the database portion of the notification-of-transfer proposal to give schools two business days after a student notifies the school he or she will transfer to enter a student-athlete’s name into the database. (link); American Baseball Coaches Association Executive Director & former High Point AD Keilitz on some of the changes, "I’m encouraged that we’re moving the right direction on starting the recruiting process a little later. So, that’s a step in the right direction. But, there are some concerns. For instance, if you can’t contact a prospect until a certain date, there aren’t conversations on campus leading up to that, and then offers are made on September 1 of their junior year, it’s almost like asking someone to marry you without going on a date. [...] We’re going to see how it works itself out, we’ll see how it all shakes out. Time will tell. Every piece of legislation is never as good as people think it is, or as bad as people think it is." (link)
The Athletic's O'Neil tackles "how complicated the transfer issue truly is." An interesting early thought from Saint Joseph's MBB HC Martelli, who is on the transfer working group, "How do you wrap your arms around a cloud?" Baylor peer Drew: "I wish we could get more dialogue between the presidents and coaches. It’s so important that both sides understand what we’re dealing with. If you’re a university president, you might not understand the difficulties that surround these issues." Former UMKC MBB student-athlete & incoming SAAC chair Knight: "I don’t think there’s any concept or legislation that will make everyone happy. I hope we can come up with a concept that not everyone hates." South Dakota State AD & transfer working group chair Sell points to the Rice Commission's announcement next week that could be the jumping off point for further reform. More. (link)
Outgoing Stephen F. Austin AD Hill has led the Lumberjacks for the past 14 years, provides perspective on his strong leadership run, "We’ve developed a culture, and that culture gives birth to a lot of good things,” Hill said. “I will say that I am proud of our five Commissioner’s cups. I think it proves from top to bottom we care about all sports and that we’re competitive and have success in all sports and proves that the entire department is involved and doesn’t just single out a couple of sports. […] I always tell recruiting classes that I have a circle in mind that when you finish your time at SFA and you walk away, you’ll know that this was the best time in [your] life to this point. [I want the students] to look back again in 20 years and say 'SFA gave me this start and I want to give back.' If we complete that circle, to me, that would be what I consider my proudest accomplishment." SFA Track & Field HC Olson: "He expects you to work hard. He expects you to be successful. He expects you to deal with issues in your program, but at the end of the day, he’s gonna give you whatever you need to be successful. There have been times in my life where I’ve been down and he’s lifted me up." (link)
Oregon AD Mullens voices support for the nine-game Pac-12 FB slate, "It’s something, as we learn more, that we’ll have to continue to monitor. It will always be under discussion. But my current lean is for nine games." Mullens also notes the non-conference scheduling strategy for the league, "The chance to play Power Five intersectional games is great for the league," but also says each school has their own individual needs, like Mullens wanting to play three home non-conference tilts, one preferably versus a fellow P5 foe, "You have to look at the league and look at your gate and look at your fan experience — so many things go into scheduling." (link)
Washington State AD Chun sat down for a convo with KREM2, touches on a handful of issues earlier in his Pullman tenure. Lauds former WSU boss Moos for leaving the department in really good shape, says he's been super impressed with the loyalty of Cougars fans he's met so far. The annual fund is up by nearly seven figures & Chun says you "can’t cut your way to prosperity" in connection to wanting to be smart about how to use revenue streams. A Baseball facility project is top of mind, as is an indoor practice space. "We have done more with less and we’re going to step into a new era where we do more with more." (link)
New Florida Atlantic AD White reaches back to Missouri, nabs former Tigers Executive Assoc. AD Alpert as his new Deputy AD in Boca. Alpert will oversee MBB, development, the Fan Relationship Management Center, plus ticket sales & operations. White: "Ryan and I have a tremendous working relationship, and his knowledge and support of our vision for FAU Athletics will be impactful as we grow the Owls’ development and ticket sales efforts in support of our coaches and student-athletes." (link); FAU also teased a new video yesterday of what the new Schmidt Family Complex for Academic and Athletic Excellence will look like inside, plus there's potentially a new logo in the works for the Owls. (link)
San Diego State FB HC Long on the Aztecs potentially crashing the CFP party as one of just seven FBS programs who have won 10 games or more in each of the last three years, "We could beat Power Five teams the next 10 times we play them. It doesn’t change anything. It does not change one thing. We’ll still be recruiting the same guys. We’ll still be playing in the same league. And the only thing that matters is that (conference) championship. Because they’re not going to give us a chance to win the other one. They are not going to give us a chance. If we honestly had a shot to win them all, we’d treat those games differently. If they actually give you an honest shot, then it changes things." Instead, Long says the focus for his program is to win conference championships as non-conference games are used as "opportunities" to get the engine humming right for Mountain West play, not for CFP consideration. (link)
Georgia Tech will unveil its official 'Tech gold' hue tomorrow after 20 to 30 options were reviewed as part of the Yellow Jackets' new deal with Adidas. Select new swag will also be on sale Friday. Tech AD Stansbury said last week that 90% of all new unis for sport programs are complete in consultation with Three Stripes. The new relationship between the pair officially starts on July 1. (link)
The latest 'Byte of the Week' from LEAD1's McMillen covers cutting sport programs, mentions Eastern Michigan & potential moves at New Mexico. McMillen: "The bad news is these types of cuts are not slowing down. We're going to see more of this. The reason why? State funding for higher ed has been cut. The pressure on student athletic fees, which support our departments. And there's been increase expenditures for facilities, student-athlete benefits, travel and the like. All these make these non- and low-revenue sports vulnerable to cuts." McMillen continues by noting fewer non-revenue student-athletes can lead to fewer medal-winners at Olympic Games in the future. 100M. 100. Million. Amazon Prime has 100M members now, according to a shareholder letter from company boss Bezos. It's the first time Bezos has mentioned a word about exact subscription numbers & is far more than even the most promising analyst estimates. Any wonder why the online giant could be a major player for sports rights in the future? From Variety: "According to Bezos’s letter, more new members joined Prime in 2017 than in any previous year, both worldwide and in the U.S." (link)

SBJ/SBD's CAA World Congress of Sports, Day 2: The Forty Under 40 cohort was celebrated, CAA mega-agent Sexton touched on the increase in HC pay, SEC Commish Sankey on innovation, says "complacency" is a dangerous state, Teall Capital & former IMG/ISP boss Sutton also touched on his fund, "I'm betting on jockeys, not horses. I've seen a great many ideas die on the vine because they didn't have a great leader." Also, Fox Sports boss Shanks, StubHub's Krimmel, outgoing SUM boss Carter & more as the SBJ/SBD team integrates more video. (link - scroll down)

The string of threatening tweets sent by former Michigan FB student-athlete Mbem-Bosse, apparently in the direction of Wolverines HC Harbaugh, has UM AD Manuel worried about Mbem-Bosse's mental health. Manuel: "Everybody who needs to be working on it, is. We’re working on it. Everybody in the university that needs to be around this to try to resolve this is. We’ll continue to do that." (link)
Boston College's FY17 990 data shows then-Eagles AD Bates made $622K, FB boss Addazio was at $2.514M & MBB HC Christian earned $1.48M. Chief Investment Officer Zona was BC's top-earning administrator at $906K for his work on the university's $281M in investment gains, growing the endowment to $2.4B. Men's Hockey HC York made $660K & highly-paid leaders also received country club membership benefits. (link)
The attorney for transferring Ole Miss-to-Michigan FB student-athlete Patterson says the case is ready to be decided by the NCAA, "I could be wrong, by my interpretation of the message that Ole Miss sent back to the NCAA this morning is, 'We’re done fighting. Just grant Shea a waiver and get this over with.'" CBSSports.com's Dodd has seen Patterson's rebuttal of Ole Miss's claims, "Patterson spends most of the document describing, in detail, how he was allegedly misled by Freeze and, at times, athletic director Ross Bjork." More. (linklink)
The legal team around former UConn MBB HC Ollie continues to press forward on constitutional rights violations by the university in the dismissal of their client. "From our review of the facts and circumstances relating to Coach Ollie's employment status, it is apparent that the University of Connecticut has already violated [Coach Ollie's] rights under the Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution by subverting Coach Ollie's opportunity to respond to charges and evidence in a meaningful way in advance of the decision to terminate his employment. The public record, action taken, and authorized communications by representatives of the University of Connecticut, demonstrate that the decision to terminate Coach Ollie has already been made and therefore the University of Connecticut has effectively negated Coach Ollie's property right protected by the Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution." Next step in the process: A meeting with Prez Herbst. (link)
ESPN's Bonagura is all over the McNair defamation trial in Los Angeles with opening arguments potentially starting as early as this afternoon. NCAA Prez Emmert & SEC Commish Sankey are both on the witness list. Context from Bonagura: "It stands to reason the NCAA never offered a settlement figure to McNair and his attorneys' satisfaction. One of McNair's attorneys, Bruce Broillet, has been involved in several high-profile civil cases, including a $55 million jury verdict for broadcaster Erin Andrews after she was secretly recorded naked in a hotel room by a stalker, according to his firm's website." McNair will testify in a process that could last an entire day. The trial is expected to stretch over a couple of weeks. More. (linklink)

The Buffalo student paper, The Spectrum, profiles new AD Alnutt, who officially began his run with the Bulls on April 11. Alnutt: "My vision for the program is student-athlete-centered academic excellence, social development and competitive success. We have about 130 staff members and I am setting up one-on-one meetings with all of them." One of his "key goals" is to make UB a recognizable brand nationwide. Alnutt will focus on growing all sports, "It is very important for us to elevate this program so it is in line to win MAC championships and go to bowl games. And when you're competing at a high level, it acts as exposure for not just the teams, but more importantly, the university." (link)
New Mexico projects FY19 combined revenue of $5.375M from Football, Men's and Women's Basketball. The total is more than $1M less than last year's projections and $2M less than the two years prior. New Prez Stokes on the over-projections of years past: "I think people were just optimistic. And overly optimistic. But I also think that making these projections is really, really difficult." The Lobos have missed the mark for these three sports the past three years, by $837.8K, $1.7M and $846K, respectively.  (link)
Fences are up and construction teams have "started mobilizing" for the new $26M indoor practice facility at Kansas. According to Director of Facilities Planning and Development Reiske, utility locator services have begun and excavation will begin in the coming weeks. The 89K-square-foot, premanufactured metal building will be "brought to the site in large segments" and is scheduled for completion by late fall. (link)
Marshall has officially lowered the price of football season tickets for the upcoming season, some by as much as 40%. Director of Ticketing Woodrum: "We want to alleviate the financial commitment of purchasing season tickets, so lowering ticket prices - while also adding new payment options and other benefits - has been a major focal point for these changes." New prices range from $99 to $249, plus donations to the Big Green Scholarship Foundation. The renewal deadline is tomorrow, but Herd brass say interest in season tickets is already up over last year. (link, link)
Appalachian State has officially reached the halfway mark on its $60M "A Mountaineer Impact - A Drive For Excellence" campaign. Of the $30M raised since 2015, 43.5% has been given for facilities, 34.6% to the Yosef Club, 10.5% for premium seating, 5.2% toward scholarship endowment, 4.5% is sport-specific giving and 1.6% is "other." More than 55 gifts of $10K+ and the scholarship endowment cash value has grown from $5.6M to $6.9M, with a goal of $10M. AD Gillin: "For Appalachian to continue to develop a comprehensively excellent athletics program that is representative of our great university, continued support is critical. The faithful generosity of our long-time donors and the new interest we're receiving throughout our fan base and alumni base makes me excited for the future of App State Athletics." (link)
Also Noticed: "In response to a series of questions from MLive.com about the status of the [Nassar] investigation, Michigan State's communications and brand strategy department sent an email saying the university responded to the NCAA on March 22." This was almost two months after the NCAA's original investigation was announced. (link); The ASUN Conference announces three new affiliate members for beach volleyball. Austin Peay, Jacksonville State and Morehead State join the group that now totals 10. (link); Michigan State and 50/50 have agreed to a multi-year extension. Since starting to use the digital platform in 2013, MSU's raffle proceeds have increased each year, up 17% to $671K this year. (link); New Hampshire's Men's Hockey team will play in the 2019 Friendship Four in Belfast, facing Hockey East opponent Northeastern in the opening round, with the winner playing either Colgate or Princeton for the Belpot Trophy. (link); Weber State and Northern Iowa announce a two-game Football series, with WSU hosting the Panthers in 2019 and a return trip to Cedar Falls in 2020. (link); Another FB deal: Georgia will welcome Indiana State in 2023 with a $500K guarantee. (link)
What would Zappos boss Hsieh do if he started over? "I would actually come up with our values from day one." Hatch Apps COO Friedman for HBR: "Developing your corporate values early in your company’s history can have a lasting and positive effect on your organization and its culture, and it’s easier to do when your team is small. After all, it’s much easier to steer a four-person speedboat than a 2,000-person cruise ship. Once your team grows larger, it may be challenging to reach consensus around what your values should be." How to work through the process effectively: 1) Develop your corporate values together; 2) Give folks the opportunity to reflect and contribute thoughtfully; 3) Get all ideas out there. And then organize them; 4) Collaboratively identify a shortlist of values; 5) Discuss interpretation; and, 6) Integrate your values. Lots here. (link)
