OC National Conference 2018

Registration is still open for our 2018 National Conference in Calgary. Designed for leaders of both established and emerging orchestras, this conference offers three days of communication between peers, practical advice, knowledge sharing and innovation. This year, we’re offering a few different approaches to knowledge exchange, including plenaries with experts, breakout sessions with your peers, and small-group workshops. Knowing the value you place on time with colleagues, there will be plenty of opportunity for you to talk with peers, both in scheduled sessions and informally. Click here to register.

In Conversation with Aubrey Bergauer

We are delighted to welcome Aubrey Bergauer from the California Symphony to our conference. Aubrey has been changing the approach to gaining and retaining new audiences in the orchestral world and will be sharing news on the Orchestra X project – an exploration of the classical music experience for new concertgoers. We recently caught up with Aubrey to hear her thoughts on her research and her approach to building a dedicated orchestral audience. Read more here!

NYO Canada Documentary

On the evening of Thursday May 31st, the National Youth Orchestra of Canada and the National Film Board of Canada will be hosting a private screening of That Higher Level, a new documentary from filmmaker John Bolton. The film follows a group of musicians as they experience the NYO 2017 training program and subsequent Edges of Canada tour, fusing together their personalities and talents to form one exceptional ensemble. The screening will take place at the Globe Cinema at 7:15pm (doors at 7pm). Entry is free – please register to guarantee your space. We would love to see you there!

Soraya Peerbaye and Parmela Attariwala

What does diversity look like in the orchestral world? And how can we better achieve inclusive and welcoming orchestras in our country? During our National Conference, Soraya Peerbaye and Parmela Attariwala will be leading two sessions on Inclusivity, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility in orchestras and arts organizations. They will be presenting research they have conducted on behalf of Orchestras Canada, and supported by the Canada Council's Leadership for Change program. They have conducted one-on-one interviews with stakeholders in the sector across Canada, including executive directors, artistic directors, conductors, composers, and arts funding representatives, as well as roundtable discussions with artistic collaborators from Indigenous, Black, South Asian and other under-represented communities.Their final paper brings together new knowledge and viewpoints, to re-envision, with both rigour and generosity, the future of Canadian orchestras.

Culture Track Canada

After numerous significant studies into how, where and why Americans consume culture over more than ten years, LaPlaca Cohen have turned their focus towards Canada and how we differ (or don’t) from our North American neighbors in their new Culture Track study. Orchestras Canada is excited to be hosting Maggie Hartnick and Phillip Cox from the cultural consulting firm, LaPlaca Cohen, at our National Conference, where we will be getting a sneak peek at what their new research means for Canadian Orchestras, before their full Culture Track reveal in late June.
