This week at St. Luke's

Photos show the rain garden before and after completion.

From the Vicar

Ferdinand and Isabella, our resident Mallard ducks, have come back to St. Luke’s and are delighted to find the new rain gardens as they prepare to produce another family of ducklings.

One of our biblical origin stories begins in a garden. It’s a place of beauty, abundance and peace. There is plenteous food for every kind of animal, fresh water and clean air. Thousands of years ago, our ancestors in faith recognized the glory of creation and the ways we humans had become separated from nature and even destructive of this good gift. We call it “the Fall.”

We who live in this rapidly growing city know how quickly we are losing arable land, clean water and a sense of belonging in a particular, healthy eco-system. This concerns all people and especially those of us who believe deeply in the sacredness of all of creation and God’s love for the entire cosmos.

We may not feel like there’s much we can do as individuals, but as the Body of Christ, we have far greater gifts and resources. The land we steward at St. Luke’s is a gift from God and from those who have gone before us. We make choices about how best to care for it to benefit not only our neighbors, but our eco-system.

The raingardens and cisterns are one way to care for and protect the waters that surround us. Our St. Luke’s Urban Garden (SLUG) is producing fresh, organic food and helping to restore the soil and attract birds and insects.

Now we are planning to nurture honey bees to help pollinate the area, restore native bee populations and produce sweet honey for the community. We have already raised the money for 3 hives and hope to add 3 more (if you are interested in purchasing a hive or a portion of one, they cost $150 and you can make a donation online or in person by noting “bees.”)

Please join our Bishop, Greg Rickel, our landscaper and crew, city officials, and neighbors to celebrate the greening of St. Luke’s on May 6 following the 10am worship service.

With faith, hope and love,
Canon Britt

Thanks for Your Pledge. Please Keep It up to Date.

We are grateful for those of you who pledge to St. Luke’s. You make it possible to budget for our many ministries, the upkeep of our property and our wonderful Vicar and staff. Many of you are faithful in your giving. Thank you!

St. Luke’s is experiencing a lag in pledge and offering income for this time of year. If you simply have trouble remembering since there’s no bill, you can make an autopay through your own online banking or fill out this form and send it to the church office to set up automatic withdrawals. For those who might have fallen behind, it would be helpful if you could catch up before summer vacations provide more distraction. You can use the QR code on the back of the bulletin or write a check. If your circumstances have changed, we understand those realities.

Your generosity, however large or small, makes a difference in the life of St. Luke’s.

Thank you.

Your Stewardship Team

Kids and Race Event

Join us for this follow-up to Kids and Race: Changing the Narrative on April 21 from 9:30am-12:30pm at St. Luke’s with our former children’s ministry intern, Jasen Frelot. This workshop empowers educators and parents to give voice to children of color without tokenizing a child who often just wants to fit in and includes a concurrent children's program for 3- to 9-year-olds led by professional educators that uses movement, music and conversation to help kids notice and celebrate their own power and privilege. Learn more on the St. Luke’s Facebook page or reserve your space online. This event sells out fast, so sign up soon!

Cathedral Day, April 28, 11am at St. Mark's Cathedral

On this special day, people from the many churches in our diocese gather to be confirmed or received or to reaffirm their faith in a special Eucharist with Bishop Greg Rickel. The preacher this year is our own Kate Davis, winner of the diocesan preaching award. Please come to support those who are making these faith commitments. We’ll meet at St. Luke’s at 9:30am and carpool to Capitol Hill. Parking is limited. A free lunch is available at this event, but requires advance registration. Visit the event website to reserve a lunch.

Bishop Blesses Bees, Gardens and Cisterns, Sunday May 6 at 11:30 After Worship

St. Luke's has recently completed the second largest rain capture (RainWise) project in the City of Seattle. We will be joined by city officials, neighbors, contractors and donors along with Bishop Greg Rickel to celebrate this project as well as the arrival of our pollinating honey bees. St. Luke's is committed to being an urban oasis and to stewarding our property and environment to bless all our neighbors.

We’ll be able to place up to six hives of honey bees on the roof of Bennett Hall. Our beekeeper, Andrew, and his assistants will care for the bees and harvest the honey. Generous donors have provided the funds for us to purchase two active sets of bees with a queen who is laying eggs. Each of these bee nucs costs $120-$150.  If you would like to contribute, please note “bees” on your check or your online donation.

Spring Cleaning?

The Bridge Care Center at St. Luke’s would be grateful for donations of gently used clothing, shoes, sleeping bags, coats and blankets.  They also appreciate personal hygiene products. The Edible Hope Kitchen provides food “to go” in recycled plastic containers.  If you have extra cottage cheese, yogurt or other containers, we can use them.

Please place all donated items in the red bucket behind the nametags in the entryway.  Thank you!

Young Adults Gathering: May 8

The location will be solidified next week, but don't worry, you won't have to go far! Questions? Talk to Sarah Grider in person or by email.
