From the Executive Director's Desk

Every year, WEC partners with New Labor to coordinate a Workers' Memorial Day event in New Brunswick. In the past, this has been the largest event of its kind nationwide.

I hope you'll join us this Sunday, April 22, at Anshe Emeth Memorial Temple in New Brunswick, beginning at 1pm, to rally and march for those injured or killed on the job. Particularly this year, in the wake of a rash of gun violence in schools, our demand to stand up for worker safety is particularly relevant.

In honor of Earth Day, we're also focusing on the need for action on climate change, a public health emergency. Extreme temperatures are only going to increase with some estimates in New Jersey showing an additional 40-50 days per year above 90 degrees. Workers will be the first to feel those climate impacts and we're calling for action now to prevent more unnecessary injuries and deaths.

You can also join us for a movie screening tonight, at the Rutgers Labor Education Center, for a free viewing of "At the River I Stand," a documentary about mobilization, determination and tragedy during the civil rights movement. It covers two very eventful months in 1968 that culminate with the successful unionization of sanitation workers and the tragic death of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in Memphis. We're proud to partner with New Labor and LEARN to provide these events free of charge.

NEW Offshore Wind Report:
75,000 Jobs Possible for Region

The construction of new offshore wind farms in New Jersey and other coastal states could lead to more than 75,000 clean energy jobs, according to a new report from the Center for American Progress and WEC.

Examples in the United States and Europe show that with the right policies in place, offshore wind development can translate into expansive job creation and demand for skilled workers, the report says. With more than 100 gigawatts of offshore wind resources available in federal and Great Lakes waters, elected officials and labor leaders have a chance to turn wind farms into economic wins for their working ports and harbors, communities, and workers.

In one of his first actions in office, New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy signed an executive order that directs the state to move toward the goal of generating 3500 megawatts of offshore wind energy by 2030.

“Gov. Murphy’s order recognizes the importance of offshore wind development,” said Dan Fatton, executive director for WEC. “This report underscores the major opportunity to not only put people to work installing those turbines, but also to create a regional supply chain that will provide family-sustaining jobs in the manufacturing and distribution industries.”
