GAMES FOR MUSEUMS

This issue is focused on the topic museums and digital tools, where applied games and persuasive applications can be used effectively, but also can become a source of problems, as presented in this interesting 2017 talk by Brera museum's director James Bradburne Making works work: Listening and learning in the Museum.

This said, I have some positive examples presented below :-)

A framework for games in museums

Museums are research institutions that often have a multi dimensional mission: research, preserve, teach, communicate. In this talk I did with Alice Filipponi we defined a conceptual and methodological framework for such projects based on two concrete examples, Autography and Opera Kidz. We tried to keep in focus the core problem: the learning experience.

Opera Kidz is a digital application that makes kids both play and explore the museum. See here a game play preview.

Design Your Applied Game: A Workshop

At the Museum Digital Transformation event, I also held a workshop Designing An Applied Game For Your Museum. Here are all the slides I used as support, the PDF of the exercise booklet I distributed and some more sample material.

More research on digital for humanities

For those who read Italian, this is a presentation of the research behind our game design model for a game on Boccaccio's Decameron.

What am I studying and writing?

Some links for filling all that free time of yours.

I found this book Teach Like a Champion on teaching techniques to be a remarkable source for designing better games for learning.

What would you get if you designed the scientific paper from scratch today? A stimulating reflection.

Exploring emotions with games: Florence.

A beautiful zine on How do we learn? by the unstoppable Nicky Case.

At Open Lab Games we are also working on a narrative game on football which is coming out nicely - a  testing ground for refining narrative storytelling with games. It could be fun even if you hate football!

Hear you soon,

Pietro
