This Sunday, April 22nd, is Earth Day, and there are a number of ways you can celebrate with friends and family throughout the weekend! From festivals to grand openings to volunteer opportunities, there's something for everyone to enjoy. This is our favorite time of year, so we're happy to present our top picks for Earth Day celebrations!

Each year, Keep Durham Beautiful participates in Keep America Beautiful's National Litter Index. This involves sending teams out across the city to document the instances and amounts of litter they see. Durham's litter index is an important part of tracking our progress in keeping Durham beautiful.
This year's Litter Index will take place on Friday, April 27th from 8:30 to 1pm. Haven't participated before? Don't worry! Each participant will be trained on how to accurately record what they find. Please make arrangements to stay for the entire time, and breakfast and lunch will be provided! This event is free and open to the public.

Celebrate Earth Day AND help support our mission by shopping at One World Market on Sunday, April 22nd! Ten percent of the day's proceeds will be donated to KDB to help us fund projects like tree plantings, community grants, and pollinator gardens throughout Durham. Stock up on your fair trade faves, many of which incorporate upcycled materials, while empowering local earth-friendly initiatives.

Looking for a different way to celebrate Earth Month? Visit Changing Worlds throughout April as Pleiades Arts, Inc. offers stunning artist responses to the dichotomy that is the beauty of our environment, the need to protect it, and the politicizing of the climate crisis. Upstairs in the solo gallery, Carin Walsh and Jenny Blazing bring a multi-media installation that invites viewers to both honor our past and confront what’s at stake if we fail to embrace long-term strategies for sustainability.
