Can the medical system cure mental illness in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside?

UPDATE: The CCAP news conference location has changed to Carnegie Community Centre, 401 Main Street, 3rd floor classroom due to weather.

Vancouver, BC, Unceded Coast Salish Territories – The Carnegie Community Action Project (CCAP) is set to release its' participatory research report on mental health in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside (DTES), "No Pill for this Ill" at 11 AM, April 16, at the Carnegie Community Centre, 3rd floor classroom, 401 Main Street.

"No Pill for this Ill" is a report by DTES residents on their community vision for mental health. To this day, the government hasn’t asked the community what we need and want for our mental health. People with mental illness continue to be marginalized and excluded from political decision-making processes which impact their lives and their wellbeing. This report
centers and builds on the voices and experiences of community members.

Attend the news conference today to hear from residents who experience mental illness and find out:

  • What are residents' experiences of the mental health system?
  • What makes mental health better for DTES residents?
  • What affects residents' mental health the most?
  • How can we solve the mental health crisis in the DTES?

About Carnegie Community Action Project
The Carnegie Community Action Project (CCAP) is a project of the board of the Carnegie Community Centre Association. CCAP works mostly on housing, income, and land use issues in the Downtown Eastside (DTES) of Vancouver so that the area can remain a low-income friendly community. CCAP works with English speaking and Chinese speaking DTES residents in speaking out on their own behalf for the changes they would like to see in their neighbourhood.
