May 2018 Elementary School Math Newsletter
Hello Math Community,

The end of the school year is in sight! Before you head off for a well-earned break, we wanted to give you a preview of some of the work to come.

Read on for information about the Core Curriculum, professional development for the 2018-19 school year, our featured resource, and opportunities for teachers and students. As always, this information (and more!) is also provided on the SFUSD Math website at www.sfusdmath.org, and you can follow us on Twitter: @SFUSDMath. Please share this newsletter with your colleagues.

Thank you for all that you do!

Featured Resource

Beginning of Year Math Launch
There are suggested agendas and PD modules to support the Math Leadership Teams in August. Choose one based on the amount of time you have at your site and your needs. Any of these agendas can be used later in the year for ongoing PD at your site. There are also a number of PD modules such as Math Talks, 3-Read Protocol, and Place Value Progression Trace available as well. Feedback is always welcome and if you have ideas for additional PD modules, please let us know in an email.

Core Curriculum News

We are happy to announce that teacher materials will be printed in COLOR. All teachers will receive a new set of materials next school year. Because next year's curriculum will be relatively stable, we will NOT print new teacher materials in the next 3-5 years, except for necessary replacements for new teachers, etc.

Some things that will be the same as in previous years:

  • We will continue to print student booklets, classwork and homework.

  • Student booklets will still be in black and white.

  • As revisions are made, the latest version of the curriculum will always be online.

Delivery of materials in the fall will be similar to this past year - All deliveries will be the week of August 13-17. The latest versions of the curriculum are always available online.

By Friday, June 1st: Please update your school's spreadsheet and note who updated it and when in the purple box. For questions and/or support, contact the math liaison assigned to your school.

Upcoming Math Professional Development

The SFUSD Math Department will be involved in a variety of district-wide professional development offerings in August:
  • New Teacher Orientation -- August 6 & 7
  • Digital District Day -- August 13
  • Para-educators Institute -- August 15 & 16
Stay tuned for additional information about other math PD opportunities in the coming year.

Opportunities for Educators

QTEA Professional Development Hours (Prop A)
This is a reminder that certificated, classified, and early education educators in SFUSD have 18 paid QTEA professional development hours available for use this school year! OPLL will award an end-of-year staff pizza party (or alternative meal of your choice) to the school with the highest usage data overall (including both certificated and classified usage).

Your annual hours can be used through June 2018. However, you need pre-approval from your supervisor to use your hours and need to make advance arrangements if you plan to use them in June. For more information, refer to this flyer. Contact Nora Houseman, QTEA Supervisor, for more information.

Bay Area Teachers and Mathematicians Summer Residential Workshop (Free!)
Have you been curious about Math Circles? Bay Area Teachers and Mathematicians (BATMath) offers a free residential summer workshop for math teachers in the San Francisco Bay Area. Spend a week immersed in fun mathematical problem solving, share your classroom experience, and make connections with local teachers and mathematicians! The workshop will take place July 9–13, 2018, at the American Institute of Mathematics (AIM) in San Jose, California, and participants are lodged in a DoubleTree Hotel nearby. Participants must commit to participating in a Math Teacher's Circle during the 2018–2019 school year. Read more here!

Recent Activities

The Argonne Elementary Lesson Study Team did a public lesson to investigate the following research question: Will students be able to access prior understanding of geometric shapes to begin to categorize them, and what questions will arise for them as they begin to understand geometric hierarchies?
Jen Partika's fifth grade class demonstrated great flexibility in thinking as they grappled with the various ways polygons can be categorized given specific attributes.
