President's Message:

Hi Members,

Happy Spring! - It is finally here. Show season has begun and we are working hard to plan events throughout the year.  April brought snow this year, but we were able to kick off the shows with the a tolerable temperature snow free day at Showtime Arena for the WAHA Spring Open Show. Exhibitors returned despite the frigid temps and enjoyed a laid back and beginner friendly horse show. There were large classes, a variety of breeds showcased, and the fun of first timers and Arabian/Half Arabian regional champions, national winners and pinto world winners all showing together! We were in great company, and enjoyed hot food all day long.

This past weekend we enjoyed the Region 10 Arabian demo at the Midwest Horse Fair. Members of Wisconsin AHA clubs WAHA, WDHA, and Spirit coordinated the demo and outreach efforts, funded by Region 10 and grants from AHA. They did a fabulous job showing the public and other horse lovers how versatile, personable and trustworthy our Arabians and Half-Arabians are. You can watch a video of the Sunday demonstration on our Facebook page!

Looking ahead, we are excited for the Badger Classic at the end of May, the WAHA August Show, and the Fall Colors Open Horse Show- at a new location this year. The WAHA Fall Colors Show has moved for 2019 to Wild Wind Equestrian Center in Waukesha, WI. The committee has decided to make the move for the additional stalls available. The show will be held in the 75' x 200' indoor arena. We hope you will join us and continue to support the show.

Finally, due to some unfortunate circumstances, Mary Jo Meier has resigned from the board of directors for this term. Mary Jo plans to run for re-election in the near future. We wish her well, and hope to fill the vacancy on the board. Interested candidates may contact me lerinhendrickson@gmail.com. We would love to have you join us at the May board meeting May 9th at 7PM Johnson Creek for our election. Please RSVP to me, lerinhendrickson@gmail.com.

Enjoy the warmer weather!

Best Regards,
Lerin Hendrickson

Second Annual WAHA Spring Open Show a Success!
Submitted by Madeline Erce

The second annual WAHA Spring Open Horse Show was a success! It was held at Bound's Showtime Arena in Deerfield on Saturday, April 7th. Even with the chilly weather, the show was well attended and everyone stayed warm with the heated arena. Halter, showmanship, walk/trot, English, western, and even discipline rail classes were offered. In an attempt to create an affordable show, classes were only $5 each and stalls were only $25 for the day.
Our food stand was also a hit, selling walking tacos, baked potatoes, hot dogs, various beverages, desserts, and even treats for the horses. A special thank you to our judge, office staff, and all volunteers who made this show possible. Make sure to keep an eye out for details on next year's show!
WAHA Member Wins OEIP (Open Event Incentive Program) Halter Category
Submitted by Nicole Fink and Nyssa Sheridan
Congratulations to WAHA member Nicole Fink and her Arabian gelding, Beau Klassic who won the overall OEIP Halter category in 2017. It’s quite an achievement! Here are a few words Nicole has to share about her experience.

“The OEIP (Open Event Incentive Program) was something that I had never heard of until I was told about it from another WAHA member. I was intrigued and looked into it further.”

OEIP is a program governed by AHA, which allows open show circuit points to be counted towards year end highpoints. These points also remain on the horse’s Datasource show record permanently. For those points to count, participants must attend an OEIP rated show.
“Beau and I came into the program late last year, so it was a shock when we received the email that we won the halter category! I am quite proud of him being 18 years old and still at the top of his game in halter,” says Beau’s owner, Nicole Fink.

Participants compete with other AHA members all across the nation. This program offers “milestones”, and when a certain number of points is achieved, participants receive a pin and also receive recognition on the AHA website. “Since our involvement with the program, we have opened up two more local area show events to the OEIP: one being Mandt’s Equestrian Center Show Series located in Oregon, and the Springtime Showdown Show held in Elkhorn.” WAHA open shows are also included in the OEIP. A full list is listed on the Arabian Horse Association website.
Showing at local shows means there are every type of breed there and all different ages, along with a wide variety of people spectating and participating. “What I enjoy most about the open shows is that Beau is an ambassador for the Arabian breed. He loves meeting with children and adults who have either no horse experience or no Arabian experience. He’s so gentle with everyone. We love to share when they ask us about our journey together. My life with my heart horse has been the biggest blessing, and this is just one more chapter in his beautiful story.”
Overview of Points Programs Offered by WAHA and AHA
Submitted by Nyssa Sheridan

There has been quite a few questions about some of the point programs offered by the Wisconsin Arabian Horse Association and the Arabian Horse Association. Here is a brief overview of the programs. This is not an extensive list of all the available programs. Additional information can be found online at www.wisconsinarabian.com and www.ArabianHorses.org.

Open Incentive Event Program (OEIP)

This program is run through the Arabian Horse Association. Show managers can register their open show events and then participants submit points to the Arabian Horse Association. There are yearly high point awards in different divisions, along with milestone awards. Submitted results become a part of the horse’s competition record on datasource for all to see the open show accomplishments.

WAHA Youth Achievement Awards

WAHA-supported program where youth can earn points in either open show/4H/WIHA events or in “horsemaster” events, such as hippology, volunteering, and attending 4H events or clinics. Cumulative milestone awards. Program is for WAHA Youth Members only.

WAHA Points Program

WAHA-supported program with annual high point awards in different divisions, including endurance, limited distance, and trail riding. Points count from open shows and rated events, but not 4H or restricted breed/color classes.

WAHA Legion of Merit (LOM)

WAHA-supported program where points are earned through the WAHA point system towards a beautiful custom bronze statue. Points count from open shows and rated events, but not 4H or restricted breed/color classes. Members can also earn points from trail riding.

AHA Achievement Awards

Cumulative milestone awards from rated events. Points accumulate towards the Arabian Legion of Merit, Honor, and so forth. Results in the permanent + or / seen behind some horses’ names.

Each of these programs have different annual enrollment fees.

Definitions

Annual Awards: Points are tracked on a calendar year and compared against other enrolled members. Typical result in “high point” awards for different divisions or categories.
Milestone Awards: Awards are given once members reach a certain benchmark of points either overall or in a division.

Rated Shows: Either AHA Arabian only events or events rated by USEF i.e. a recognized all breed dressage show, reining show, etc.
