Welcome
We are in April and WOW so much has happened that it is hard to take it all in. We have just seen the wrap up of the #MSANATS2018 over in WA and 2 other Championships all successfully held and well attended in Qld and Vic which makes
3 swims of the 2018 MSA Swim Series completed.

The last few months has also seen over 25 Meets held by Branches and Clubs around Australia,we have seen 5 provisional World records broken, a multitude of National and Branch records also broken, we have celebrated with our Masters swimmers and Clubs who have received acknowledgments for their amazing achievements
(MSA Awards, Branch Awards, sporting group awards and some also taking part in the Queens Baton Relay just to name a few). We have also celebrated George Corones who not only turned 100 this month and has 2 provisional World Records waiting to be ratified, he was also made an honorary member of the  Australian Commonwealth Games team and we watched Masters Swimming showcased at the Hancock Prospecting Australian Swimming Trials in QLD.
BUT if that is not enough we are also incredibly excited to announce

a brand new MSA initiative with 2018 being designated as the:
'Year of the Coach'

Read all about this and more in this e-news.

Vale Jane 20/01/1991 - 08/04/2018
We start off this e-new with some incredibly sad news. -  Jane Barnes our lovely Administrator who has been an integral part of the MSV/MSA team since 2012 passed away on Sunday 8 April 2018 after a 2 year battle with Leukemia.  She never lost her contagious smile and love of all sport - especially her beloved Saints, all things netball and her Masters Swimmers. Listen to an interview with Jane  and the Get Up with Herbie and Dane breakfast crew on Hit93.1. Let’s keep Jane’s fight going (if you can donate blood please visit http://www.donateblood.com.au/) or donate to Maddie Riewoldt’s Vision

We would also like to acknowledge our retiring Board Member and thank Therese Crollick for her term on the NBM and wish her well for the coming year. Therese has been a member of Masters Swimming for 34 years, joining her first club Summerland AUSSI Masters in October 1984. 2018 is the 'YEAR OF THE COACH'
We are excited to launch the newest initiative of MSA
THE YEAR OF THE COACH
As many would know Coaches are a very important part of the Masters Swimming family: they help competitive swimmers to reach their goals and set new records (in the pool and on the open water) and they help ‘recreational’ swimmers keep fit and healthy.
Throughout 2018 MSA will be:-
  • Promoting our coaches – giving you insight into what drew them into coaching and what some of their ‘special moments’ have been. Click HERE to read about our National Coaching Coordinator Bruce Allender (STOP PRESS Bruce was announced at the closing ceremony of the 2018 National Championships as the Inaugural MSA 2017 Volunteer of the Year winner - see more below)
  • Providing you: with some great coaching ideas (see Take Your Mark)
  • Offering a coach course subsidy: to assist individuals to attend a MSA Club Coach Course.
  • Encouraging clubs: to profile and support their coaches.
To read more about the Coaching subsidy visit MSA website

Thank you MSV Coaching Director and Glamourheads member Mark Sendecky for the great logo - you will be seeing more of this around on social media and on our website.

As part of The Year of the Coach we are excited to also announce we already have scheduled 5 upcoming Club Coach Courses.

VORGEE MILLION METRES
The Vorgee Million Metres Awards acknowledge progress from the “learn to swim” beginner to the distance swimmer. These awards are intended to stimulate members to strive for greater fitness and are open to all registered members of Masters Swimming Australia. So far in 2018 we have awarded:
One Million Metres: Naomi McGilvray and Tomasz Dobrzanski
Two Million Metres: Graeme Williams and Robert Kirkbride
Below are some of the happy Million Metres recipients. We love to be able to share these pictures.

Top left: Brian Hall from Bunbury Masters (WBB) - he would like to thank his coach for most of his 5 Million Metres swum - [his bride] & club coach - to his right with the red flower. (November 2017)
Top right: Matthew Cranley and Neil Thiess from Noarlunga Master Swimmers (SNO) 2 and 3 Million respectively - looking the part! (November 2017)
Bottom left: a rather excited Nomi McGilvray from North Mackay Sinkers (QNS) with her first 1 Million Metres and she is already heading for 2! (February 2018)
Bottom right: Steve Richards from Hobart Dolphins (THB) 5 Million Metres (1 of 2 swimmers who completed 5 Million from Tasmania in November 2017) great work
.
VORGEE ENDURANCE 1000:
The Vorgee Endurance 1000 is designed to encourage people to compete in distances from 400 metres to 60 minutes duration in a variety of strokes. Each year the program has enjoyed an increase in the number of swimmers competing, endorsing its popularity with the members.

The total number of swims (gaining points) that can be completed is 62 - broken down into: 25 individual 400m swims, 25 individual 800m swims, 3 by 1500m swims, 3 by 30 minute swims, 3 by 45 minute swims and 3 by 60 minute swims. Congratulations to the 82 MEMBERS who completed 62 swims. Aside from individual achievements there are 2 club trophies.

Vorgee Endurance 1000 Champion Club
Points are gained for the completion of each different event. These combine with points gained by fellow club members and contribute to a total point score for each competing club. The highest scoring club will then be declared the Vorgee Endurance 1000 Champion Club. (Previously known as the Aerobic Trophy winner.) We congratulate Noosa Masters Swimming Club MSQ as the winner of the 2017 Vorgee Endurance 1000 Club Champion Trophy (3rd year in a row)

Vorgee Endurance 1000 Award
As an extension of the program, the Vorgee Endurance 1000 Award (previously known as the Tassie Award and National Aerobic Award) goes to the club averaging the highest number of points per registered member. This is designed to encourage as many members as possible in each competing club to complete one or more events in the Vorgee Endurance 1000 program. eg; 10 swimmers from a club of 10 members scoring 10 points each - total 100 points (average 10 points each) would beat a club of 5 swimmers out of 50 members scoring 50 points each - total 250 points (average 5 points each). Well done to  Campbelltown Collegiates MSNSW who won the 2017 Vorgee Endurance 1000 Award for the 2nd year in a row.

Volunteer of the Month:
Therese Crollick
Here we celebrate outgoing NBM member Therese Crollick who has been involved in Masters Swimming for over 30 years. She has been swimming since age 8 and when she moved from Sydney to Lismore in 1984 it seemed only natural that she would continue her involvement with swimming so joined the Summerland AUSSI Masters club based at Alstonville in October of 1984 and her first Masters carnival was at Armidale in February 1985. Her story and dedication is an inspiration to us all.
With Deep Sadness:
We at MSA are saddened by the recent passing of some long-time and passionate Masters Swimming members and supporters but we are privileged to celebrate their lives with you all.
They will all be greatly missed.
VALE Ray Smythe
It is with much sadness the Toowoomba Tadpoles report that Ray Smythe, Masters swimmer and technical official, passed away in Toowoomba on 26 December 2018. Ray had been a member of Virginia before moving and joining the Tadpoles in the 1990s. He served as Club Secretary, Meet Director for the 2002 State Swim and as Queensland Branch Manager of IT and Director Technical Services. His generous smile was welcome even when he was disqualifying someone!

Vale Brian Travers
Brian Travers passed away on 25 January 2018, aged 75. He was affectionately called Buddy by his many friends. He was the former owner of IST and for many years organized the overseas trips to FINA events for Australian swimmers.  Brian was a valuable member of the North Sydney Masters and was announcer at their carnivals.
Vale Keith Wake
It is with great sadness that Warringah Masters inform the masters swimming world of the passing of Life Member, Keith Wake.  He passed away in February 2018 aged 90. Keith was a stalwart of the club and a strong advocate of Masters Swimming. He was instrumental in shaping our approach to coaching and indeed, many of Keith's training sets figure in my coaching and that of many others.

VALE Ruth Zeigeler.
It is with deep saddness that Atlantis Masters  share the passing of Ruth Zeigeler. Ruth passed away in April 2018t after a short illness. Ruth was a much loved and energetic Club Member. She was the Club President from 2007 to 2016 and held the positions of Club Captain and Coaching Director for the past two years. She was Atlantis' Organiser of the very successful annual MS Mega Swims. Her sudden illness and passing has been a huge shock to everyone.
Branch News:

Take Your Mark
Mark Morgan is a Masters coach/swimmer in Sydney who has been generously sharing his knowledge and writing blogs for the 2018 Nationals and sharing these "Take Your Mark" columns with the broader Masters swimming community. Mark Morgan has written a series of ‘blogs’ that are a great read.

Stay Hot After Warming Up for Hot Performances
We’ve always known the importance of warming up to benefit swim performance. Trouble with most swim meets is the ability to warm-up close to an event is hard if the facility doesn’t have a warm-up pool separate to the competition pool. Here is a study highlighting a way to stay warm after a warm-up if you don’t have a warm-up pool. He has recently written the definitive book for masters athletes titled The Masters Athlete

Don't fall victim: How to recognise scams targeting grassroots sport
Do you know the difference between  'spamming’ , ‘spoofing’ , and ‘phishing’?
With the growth in technology and its increasing accessibility, we have seen the modernisation of sporting clubs nationally, and in turn, a rise in the efficiency of these organisations. However, as time-consuming paper-based processes are replaced with the powerful click of a few buttons, we slowly begin to open ourselves up to increasingly creative criminal cyber-attacks. This article breaks down the terms and addresses a current scam targeting sports clubs - where the scammer assumes the identity of a committee member to access funds from the club.

Congratulations:
And we would like to finish off on a celebratory note. Congratulations to George Corones for smashing 2 World records. You are an inspiration to all in the Masters Swimming World and beyond. You just need to google or facebook George's name to see how he has touched so many people is so many countries with an incredible amount of articles written about George.

We love how both
KidsNews and the Morning Bulletin start their stories by this quote
'NOT all superheroes wear capes. Some of them wear caps instead, and 99-year-old Australian swimmer George Corones is one of them'

Here are just a couple more articles/videos.
