Margaret (Peggy) Honein, PhD, MPH

Margaret (Peggy) Honein, PhD, MPH is an epidemiologist and Chief of the Birth Defects Branch at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and was credentialed as a Distinguished Consultant/Senior Scientist at the CDC in 2010. Dr. Honein received her B.S. degree in Biology from the University of California, Riverside in 1986, her M.P.H. from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in 1992, and her Ph.D. in Epidemiology from UCLA in 1995. Dr. Honein’s research interests include understanding the role of smoking in birth defects, assessing the safety or risk of medication use and vaccine use during pregnancy, evaluating the impact of infections during pregnancy, and examining longer term outcomes and costs associated with congenital heart defects and other birth defects across the lifespan.

Marc Mendelson, PhD, MBBS, FRCP(UK), DTM&H

Dr Marc Mendelson is Professor of Infectious Diseases and Head of the Division of Infectious Diseases & HIV Medicine at Groote Schuur Hospital, University of Cape Town (UCT). He studied Medicine at St Mary’s Hospital, London and specialized in Infectious Diseases at Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge, where he attained his PhD. He moved to The Rockefeller University, New York in 2001 and subsequently to UCT to work on tuberculosis and innate immunity.

Marc is Chair of the Ministerial Advisory Committee on Antimicrobial Resistance, the South African lead for Antimicrobial Resistance on the Global Health Security Agenda, co-chair of the South African Antibiotic Stewardship Programme, and co-author the South African Antimicrobial Strategic Framework. He is the Past-President of the Federation of Infectious Diseases Societies of Southern Africa, and President-Elect of the International Society for Infectious Diseases. His focus is on national and international policy around access, appropriate use and innovation to combat antimicrobial resistance.

Christina Coyle, MD

Dr. Coyle is widely known as one of the most experienced tropical medicine clinicians in North America, working with a team of clinicians and lab specialists who have honed their skills working at Albert Einstein University in the Bronx, a microcosm where virtually every parasite endemic area of the world is represented.
In 2007, she became a site director for GeoSentinel, a worldwide communication and data collection network for the surveillance of travel-related morbidity.

Jay S. Keystone, MD

Dr. Keystone is one of the  senior  figures internationally in Travel Medicine. More importantly, he is a truly gifted teacher, consistently ranking among the very best lecturers of any course in which he participates. He is the former president of the International Society of Travel Medicine, the clinical section of the American Society of Tropical Medicine, and the Canadian Society of International Health and recently, a member of the Order of Canada for his contributions to travel and tropical medicine in Canada.

Course Content

Tropical Medicine Clinical Review – 3 days
These presentations cover the latest health issues and treatments for travelers and indigenous populations. Presentations include the latest research and diagnostics in tropical and parasitic diseases and preventative medicine for travelers.

Laboratory Course: Malaria and Parasitic Zoonoses – 1 day
Laboratory workshop overview of blood borne and intestinal parasites and hands-on teaching of microscopy for medical laboratory technologists, microbiologists, clinicians, nurses, and other industry personnel.

You may register for one, or both of these course components; however the laboratory section is limited to 40 participants.

Meet our Clinical Tropical Medicine Course Directors

Dr. Michael Libman, MD

 
Dr. Libman is the director of the J. D. MacLean Centre for Tropical Diseases at McGill University and the Tropical Disease clinic at the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC), Former Director of the McGill University Division of Infectious Diseases, Consulting Microbiologist for the region of Nunavik and Professor of Medicine at McGill University. Dr. Libman has expertise in many areas of infectious diseases and microbiology. His research involves infections acquired by travelers and immigrants, as well as diseases which are particularly problematic in the Canadian far north. Dr. Libman holds leadership positions in a number of professional societies, including the Association of Medical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases of Canada, the American Society for Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, and the International Society of Travel Medicine. He is a Visiting Professor at Manipal Academy of Higher Education in India as well as the University of Addis Ababa, and a co-director of the annual Tropical Medicine training course at the Christian Medical College in Vellore, India.

Dr. Cedric Yansouni, MD, FRCPC DTM&H

Dr Yansouni is an Assistant Professor of Infectious Diseases and Medical Microbiology at the McGill University Health Centre in Montreal, where he serves as Associate Director of the J.D. MacLean Centre for Tropical Diseases. His research is focused on improving diagnostic tools and care for infectious diseases in remote or low resource settings, with an emphasis on enteric parasitic infections and diagnostic bacteriology. He is currently a technical advisor to the World Health Organization (WHO) for prequalification of diagnostics. He has been a founding co-Director of the Global Health Diagnostics Course since 2015 and has contributed to our Clinical Tropical Medicine Course since 2010.

Antimicrobial Resistance Special Session
Saturday, June 16, 2018
For the first time ever, we are holding a 1-day special session on Saturday (June 16, 2018) to address one of the most pressing issues facing global health today. Organised by Makeda Semret, a McGill University Assistant Professor of Medicine, this course will focus on resistance to antimicrobials and approaches to tackling the misuse of antibiotics in different medical settings.
