AMSA Public Consultation - Vessel Levy Legislation: From 1 July 2018, AMSA will deliver all national system services, including the certification of vessels and seafarers and ensuring they comply with safety standards. The national system will mean the fees for vessel services will be the same in all Australian states and territories.

As a result of the
announcement of a $102.4 million support package for industry by the Transport and Infrastructure Council, a levy for the national system will be phased in gradually to allow time for industry to adjust and prepare for the changes. No levy will be charged to industry in the first year of AMSA's service delivery as the government subsidy is 100%. This is to ensure fair and equitable treatment of all operators as charging arrangements are standardised and services transition across Australia.

Please click here to see the Levy Fees. These fees do not include survey costs.

The Department of Infrastructure, Regional Development and Cities is conducting a public consultation process to inform final drafting of legislative instruments that will implement an annual levy and fees for services on domestic commercial vessels. The department welcomes written submissions on the draft legislative instruments by Monday 30 April 2018. Click here for more info...

SAWIN Update:
WIN was formed in 1996 by 3 women, June Gill, Gloria Jones and Charmain Wait, who developed the concept that became SAWIN from identifying a need for a group of women who were recognised as a responsible body, whose opinions would be values and sought and who could speak to emerging social issues. This was clearly needed as it was a major success becoming incorporated, launching a very successful cookbook, developing and hosting the Bi annual SA seafood awards with many member, meetings 4 times a year and linkages with Rural Affairs department in SA. This was followed by a workshop in 1998 that identified the need for the body to be a National Group, thus WIN became SAWIN and WINSC was the name for the national group with a Board and each state able to nominate a Board member and 3 Directors at Large.

In SA we have successfully run the Bi-annual Seafood Awards since the inception in 1999. We rolled out the Kondinin published book the Seafood Story to 130 metropolitan primary school libraries and hosted a launch for the Seafood Story book and Education Kit at the Star of the Sea school. SAWIN has had a guaranteed position at the representative bodies SAFIC and its replacement Wildcatch Fisheries. A Fish and Chip van was manned during the inaugural Tasting Australia Festival and carp sausage tastings were provided to the hugely successful first SARDI open day and a presence has been had at opportunistic festivals over the years.

To best provide for members present and future, SAWIN is going to hold a strategic directions workshop in June to set the future of SAWIN. The workshop will be professionally facilitated and include past and present members, stakeholders and interested people. The  workshop will be held over a day at the Australian Fisheries and Maritime Academy and invites will be sent out however if you are interested please register your interest by email to Karen Holder. This is a great opportunity to engage with other women in our amazing and diverse industry.

Prime Super - Diversify your investments and help manage your risk:  One of the longest standing principles of good investment is to ensure you have a range of investments. As one of the world’s most famous investors – Warren Buffett - says ‘one should never put all one’s eggs in one basket’

Having all your money in one investment may produce great returns. But it can also mean big losses if your investment goes sour. If you have a variety of investments and one of them goes bad, the others could be stable or even increasing, which will help cushion the impact on your total portfolio. This is known as diversification.

Your financial goals are important too and diversification can help you meet them. We all have different financial goals and where you are in your life can influence these goals. Click here to read more.

Workplace Health and Safety Survey:  Accidents can change lives forever - for families, friends, communities, even co-workers.

You may think “it won’t happen to me” but is that a risk you are willing to take? Especially when you and your mates are involved?

Take it from these local fishermen who experienced firsthand what it was like when faced with life or death situations while out at sea.

We are looking for a quick 15-25 minutes of your time, which we know is precious – but so is the life of you and your mates. If you do complete the survey and include your name and contact details, you go into the draw to get a PFD – one is drawn every 10 days between now and when the survey closes at the end of June!

If you work in the fishing industry, be it out on the water, the wharf, work for someone else or on your own, or work for a fishing business, we are asking you to please HAVE YOUR SAY and complete this survey – What’s stopping you from keeping you and your mates safe?

Together we can all support the efforts towards creating safer work environments throughout the fishing industry.

Note this survey is completely anonymous, unless respondents would like to leave contact details for further follow up or to receive information. There is an option to enter information about specific events or issues relevant to the respondent.

Survey will be open from now (mid-April) until the end of June 2018.

OceanWatch Australia: Calling all Professional Fishermen! The OceanWatch Master Fisherman program has seen such a positive impact in the community and environment we have developed a 6 point plan to take the program to new heights.

We need the input of previous participants and professional fishermen who haven't participated in the program to help to make this a reality, so please watch the
video and take our survey here.
