May 2018 High School Math Newsletter
Hello Math Community,

The end of the school year is in sight! We hope you will have some time this summer to rest, reflect, and rejuvenate!

Read on for information about the Core Curriculum, opportunities for the summer, and a preview of PD for the 2018–2019 school year. As always, this information (and more!) is also provided on the SFUSD Math website at www.sfusdmath.org, and you can follow us on Twitter: @SFUSDMath. Please share this newsletter with your colleagues.

Thank you for all that you do!

Core Curriculum News

Department Chairs and Math Representatives, please complete your requests for teacher packets and student books for 2018–2019.

Unlike previous years, your school can choose whether or not to receive student books by course team (e.g. only Geometry), or by teacher (e.g. only new teachers). Please order teacher packets for all new teachers and for any other teachers who may want one. The Geometry course is being revised, so make sure to order teacher materials for every Geometry teacher at your site.

Materials will be delivered to schools during the week of August 13–17. The latest versions of the curriculum are always available online

Contact Andres Marti if you have any questions.

Preview of Math Professional Development

Refer to Math PD Structures for 2018–2019 to see the dates and locations of our PD next year. For a calendar of all of the high school math professional development activities, see the PD Calendar on the Math Department website.

New Teacher Opportunities

The SFUSD New Teacher Orientation will be on August 6 and 7. There will be a session for secondary math teachers, so make sure you support your new teachers in attending!

We will have drop-in support with the Core Curriculum for new teachers on August 16 at Cabrillo from 8:30 to 12:00. If you have a new teacher who needs an orientation to the curriculum, is teaching a course by themselves, or needs help getting their materials organized, please send them to us!

Have you been curious about Math Circles? Bay Area Teachers and Mathematicians (BATMath) offers free residential summer workshop for math teachers in the San Francisco Bay Area. Spend a week immersed in fun mathematical problem solving, share your classroom experience, and make connections with local teachers and mathematicians! The workshop will take place July 9–13, 2018, at the American Institute of Mathematics (AIM) in San Jose, California, and participants are lodged in a DoubleTree Hotel nearby. Participants must commit to participating in a Math Teacher's Circle during the 2018–2019 school year. Read more here!

QTEA Professional Development Hours (Prop A)
This is a reminder that certificated, classified, and early education educators in SFUSD have 18 paid QTEA professional development hours available for use this school year! OPLL will award an end-of-year staff pizza party (or alternative meal of your choice) to the school with the highest usage data overall, including both certificated and classified usage.

Your annual hours can be used through June 2018. However, you need pre-approval from your supervisor and you need to make advance arrangements to use your hours in June. For more information, refer to this flyer. Contact Nora Houseman, QTEA Supervisor, for more information.

VEX Robotics Girl Powered Workshop
On the weekend of August 11 and 12, Google is sponsoring a 2-day workshop at the Google Campus in Sunnyvale for high school and middle school girls and their teachers/mentors who are interested in learning about the VEX Robotics Program. In the VEX Robotics Competition, teams of students are tasked with designing and building a robot to play against other teams in a game-based engineering challenge.

This workshop is open to any girl who is a beginner or has limited experience with robotics and would like to learn more about designing, building and programming robots. A mentor/teacher or teacher is required for team signups. Read more and indicate your interest through this Interest Form. Note: There is a fee of $50 for participants that can be waived for financial hardship; request the fee waiver in the comments section. There is no fee for mentors.

Recent Activities

In April, we had our last monthly math meeting of the year, and math leaders had the chance to reflect on a success with their colleagues. We saw some of you at the joint social with CCSF Math Faculty members. T-Facs shared their accomplishments and goals at the end of year celebration. And in May, we celebrated Euclid's birthday with members of the San Francisco Math Teacher's Association.

Have a wonderful summer!
