The Meditation Method that Finally Worked & 1 Principle to Measure Quality of Life

I have two thoughts for you this week, which come in two seemingly unrelated pieces of writing that I published. But as a reader of Woolgathering, I would hope that by now you know that really, nothing is unrelated.

Uncertainty, Discomfort, and What Makes for a Good Life

A Mentor of mine recently gave me some of the best advice about how to look at life in general, and it happens to be a single sentence:

"The quality of your life is directly related to the amount of discomfort and uncertainty you can handle."

The Type of Meditation that Finally Got Me to Meditate

I've struggled to Meditate for well over a decade. I tried so many different styles, and all it did was make me feel bad that I couldn't reap the benefits that so many people were talking about with a regular meditation habit. Well, no more. I finally found a style of meditation that makes me want to meditate every day. To boot, in only a few weeks, it has done more for my emotional well-being than nearly any other activity I've done so far.

Other Interesting Ideas

  • Are You Aware of the Concept of Mental Load? You Should Be

It took my wife pointing this phenomenon out to me for me to really appreciate the gravity of it. It's a fun and easy read (lots of pretty pictures). But it is something very valuable to understand, but not often written about. Go check it out.
  • How to Think About Your Career, but Also, How to Think About Yourself

Again, thanks to my wife for sending this one my way. It's a long read, so save it for a plane ride (like I did) or some similar time free from interruptions. Ostensibly, it's about how to think about what your career should be, but it's really more about figuring out who you are—among the warring factions of your sense of self.
  • The Brain-boosting Supplement I Take Every Day

I tend to be skeptical of supplements that boast the ability to make people smarter, have better memories, and things like that. Nearly a year ago, I got a deep discount on a bottle of Cognium (by Natrol). Within a few weeks, I noticed an array of good results. My mental clarity and vigilance increased. I found myself remembering things much better than I used to.
Have you checked out my course on Skillshare—Getting Things Done in Google Sheets? If not, now's the time. Skillshare normally charges $2 per month to sign up and watch my courses and others. Right now, you can get 2 free months on the platform with this link. Then you can go and watch the course.
