Welcome to the April 2018 WHPC newsletter!
This month’s newsletter includes our call for posters and participation at ISC18. If you are an early to mid-career woman, consider presenting your work as a poster at the ISC18 conference. This year we are delighted to be working with the ISC conference organizers to highlight the work of women by providing the opportunity to present your poster in the main conference program. This is a fantastic opportunity to build awareness of your work at the leading European HPC conference. Full details below.
We are also thrilled to hear about two initiatives aimed at promoting diversity and inclusion around the globe. The University of Illinois is currently searching for their first Vice Chancellor for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. If you have ideas for the search committee, they would like to hear from you.
The Government of Australia has also recently announced their WGEA Employer of Choice for Gender Equality citations, which recognises best practices in all sizes of organisations that are adhering to the standards set out in the Australian Workplace Gender Equality Act of 2012.
We are also delighted that Cherri Pancake, a woman in HPC, is standing for president of ACM.
Finally, in this month’s newsletter you will also find information about the Intel ACM SIGHPC student fellowships and a call for participation for Research Software Engineers Collaborations workshop.

WHPC at ISC: Call for Posters Now Open!
8th International Women in HPC Workshop: Thursday, 28 June, Frankfurt, Germany
The WHPC workshop at ISC18 provides leaders and managers in the HPC community with methods to improve diversity and provides early career women with an opportunity to develop their professional skills and profile.
The session for women in the community that focuses on Skills to Thrive includes posters by early and mid-career women on any HPC topic. Poster authors will also be given the opportunity to give a short talk on their poster topic and to present their poster as part of the main ISC18 conference program.
Please consider submitting yourself, and pass the word to your colleagues and collaborators. Be a great friend and mentor and encourage others to submit! Participating in the ISC18 conference is a fantastic way to promote your work and achievements, build collaborations, and gain useful feedback on your work.

Intel ACM SIGHPC Graduate Fellowships
Do you know of students who are studying data science or computing applications, and who are either women or members of an underrepresented group? Please forward this information to them or to their academic advisors — it could be worth $15,000 per year!
Two years ago ACM SIGHPC and Intel launched a new international program of graduate fellowships in computational and data science. The goal of these graduate fellowships is to increase the diversity of students pursuing graduate degrees in data science and computational science, including women as well as students from racial/ethnic backgrounds that have not traditionally participated in the computing field. The program supports students pursuing degrees at institutions anywhere in the world.
Submissions open are now open for these fellowships. Interested faculty advisors and students can find more information on the fellowships, including a description of the online nomination process, here. Nominations close April 30.

RSEs Invited to Collaboration Workshop
Are you a Research Software Engineer (RSE)? The Software Sustainability Institute would like to invite all RSEs to “Workshop: Impact of International Collaborations in Research Software,” which will take place on Tuesday, 24th April, at the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester, UK.
Earlier this year, EPSRC awarded the Software Sustainability Institute and EPCC money to fund UK-US RSE collaboration and to run a competition for the best use of the ARCHER Supercomputer. This workshop will showcase the impact of the “Best Use of the ARCHER Supercomputer” competition awards, alongside other examples of research that demonstrate the importance of collaboration and provide a space to discuss opportunities to build on international collaboration.
Sessions include presentations on the impact of science on supercomputers and a panel on the future of research software in the UK. Attendees will include representatives from across the research software and computational science communities.
