Expressive works by seventeenth and eighteenth century composers are the focus of The Ebor Singers' forthcoming concert on Saturday 19 May. Both written in the 1670s, Charpentier's Messe de Morts (commemorating various obsequies for  his patrons the Guise family)  and Purcell's Funeral Sentences (possibly written following the death of his teacher Matthew Locke in 1677), demonstrate the highly expressive influence of Italian music in England and France. To celebrate the 350th anniversary of Francois Couperin's birth in 1668, the third of his Lecons de Tenebres will be performed, which both entertained and moved when they were first heard in  Holy Week 1714, with the musical language matching the poignancy of the text and the drama of the liturgy.

For this service of Compline, the choir will be performing Ben Rowarth's 'Night Prayer: Compline Renewed'.  It is a through-composed setting which also examines themse of intimacy, fear, life and death.  Written for two choirs, it explores ways that sound can be experienced in different parts of sacred spaces. This is the second performance of the work, following its London premiere at the London Festival of Contemporary Church Music, who commissioned the work.

Ben was winner of the National Centre of Early Music's Young Composers Award in 2012 with his piece 'Where is now thy God' and is a former member of The Ebor Singers.    You can listen to 'Where is now thy God' here.
